Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

One owner experienced spontaneous passenger-side airbag deployment while driving on a Los Angeles city street in July 2013, with no collision or impact. The vehicle stopped operating after deployment, and the owner's brother sustained arm bruising. The dealer denied warranty coverage, and the owner's insurance refused to cover the malfunction.

Takata recall issues dominate the remaining 19 complaints. Owners received NHTSA recall notifications (campaigns 15V-318 for driver-side modules and 14V428 for driver and passenger modules) starting in July 2014 and continuing through mid-2015. The core problem: repair parts remained unavailable for well over a year in multiple cases. Owners reported calling dealers repeatedly, being placed on waiting lists with 40+ customers ahead of them, receiving promises of parts by December 2014 that never materialized, and being given no delivery estimates. Several owners documented 12-month-plus waits with no resolution. One owner was explicitly warned not to drive with a passenger in the front seat. Dealers cited parts backorders and lack of availability; BMW North America reportedly told owners the recall was "voluntary" and acknowledged no urgency. One complaint alleged a Brooklyn dealer and BMW refused to complete the recall entirely. No owner reported an actual airbag failure during the waiting period.
