A recall is the manufacturer admitting in writing that something on the car is broken. Sometimes it's a $5 grommet. Sometimes it's airbags that fire shrapnel into the cabin. The severity tags here tell you which is which — based on what NHTSA documented in deaths, fires, and crashes, not what the press release said.
If you got a letter, plug the campaign number into the search box below. The fix is free at any dealer for the affected brand, and dealers can't legally refuse the repair regardless of where you bought the car. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
New to this? Start with how to check car recalls by VIN — the two-minute, free way to see if any specific car has an open recall. Then see the flip side: defects NHTSA never recalled and what’s currently under investigation.
