Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin DOR-K5Y9W-11 Oct 2016

All applicable vehicle applications are without Electronic Accessory Control System option. This communication is to return unsold inventory because some product sold in 2016 may not have coil harness wound in a centered condition as an assembly aid. If installer does not center the rotations of the assembly during replacement process in accordance with applicable AllData service and repair procedure, post-install turning of the steering wheel will trigger the air bag warning light of the vehicle.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners describe two broad categories of failure: warning light issues that dealer visits don't permanently fix, and complete non-deployment during crashes.

On the warning-light side, dealers have replaced sensors, computers, and springs across multiple visits without resolving intermittent illumination. One owner was told the airbag may or may not deploy in an accident. Another found their VIN wasn't covered by an available recall (06V417000), leaving them unrepaired.

The non-deployment failures are more serious. Owners report airbags staying silent in head-on collisions at 55 mph, side-impact crashes causing rollovers, and impacts at 35–40 mph—all resulting in injuries and totaled vehicles. One crash involved a wheel detachment and three rollovers; another was a pole strike that threw a vehicle through a windshield. Injuries include broken bones, sprained necks and backs.

One owner's mechanic identified loose under-dash connectors as the culprit and mentioned GM has an upgraded replacement set available. That same owner found crash reports from other 05 Tahoes with identical connector problems and non-deployment. GM charged roughly $500 for the connector replacement, but no formal recall was issued by the manufacturer according to owner accounts.

Failure modes owners describe

Loose/defective under-dash airbag connectors

Under-dash connectors for the airbag system fail to make proper electrical contact, preventing airbag deployment in collisions. Owners report that dealers and mechanics have identified loose connectors and GM has developed an upgraded replacement part, suggesting a known manufacturing defect.

When: Identified during service; affects vehicles across mileage ranges

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag system non-functional per dealer diagnostic; Loose connector not making contact; Airbags fail to deploy in actual crashes at speeds exceeding 35 mph

Repairs/costs cited: Under-dash connector replacement approximately $500 (owner cost); upgraded replacement connectors available from GM

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM has developed upgraded replacement connector set; no recall noted by owners

Passenger-side airbag sensing system failure

The passenger-side sensing system fails to function properly, preventing deployment. One owner was advised of a potential recall (06V417000) but their VIN was not included.

When: At approximately 136,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger-side airbag warning light illuminated on startup

Repairs/costs cited: Passenger-side sensing system replacement needed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign 06V417000 exists for airbags; owner's VIN was not covered by recall

Intermittent airbag warning light with multiple causes

Airbag warning light comes on and off intermittently; dealers attempt repeated replacements of various components (sensor, computer, spring) without permanently resolving the issue. Dealer indicates airbag may or may not deploy in an accident.

When: Vehicle made multiple dealer visits; exact mileage not stated

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag light comes on intermittently; Airbag light and tire pressure light both illuminate intermittently; Uncertainty about deployment status

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer replaced sensor, replaced computer, replaced spring across four service visits; issue unresolved

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer advised that airbag may or may not deploy if involved in an accident

Complete airbag non-deployment in collisions

Multiple owners report that airbags failed to deploy during actual crashes including head-on collisions, side-impact collisions, flip-overs, and other significant impact events. These failures occurred across different mileage ranges (75,000 to 199,000 miles) and speed ranges (10 to 55 mph). Owners sustained injuries including broken bones, sprained backs and necks.

When: Various mileage: 75,000 miles; 131,000 miles; 136,000 miles; 199,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment in head-on collision at 55 mph; No airbag deployment in side-impact flip-over at 10 mph; No airbag deployment in rollover after wheel detachment at 50 mph; No airbag deployment in animal collision at 55 mph; No airbag deployment in front-end impact at 35-40 mph; No airbag deployment during collision with pole/trees

Repairs/costs cited: No repairs completed; vehicles were totaled or sent to body shop

Service airbag warning light without clear cause

Service airbag warning light illuminates on startup with beeping sound. Owners are confused about which airbags are non-functional (front vs. side) and whether the vehicle is safe to drive. No clear diagnostic or repair path provided.

When: At approximately 122,807 miles and during normal startup

Symptoms owners cite: Service airbag warning light illuminated on startup; Beeping sound with warning light; Uncertainty about which airbags are affected

Codes mentioned: Multiple airbag codes relating to driver and passenger seats (complaint #14)

Repairs/costs cited: Not diagnosed or repaired
