What stands out

Airbags accounts for 32% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 12 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 276 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The dominant complaint pattern is Takata airbag inflator parts remaining unavailable years after recall notices were issued. Owners consistently report calling dealerships, being told parts are on backorder with no delivery date, and watching months turn into years of waiting. One owner garaged his Mustang for three years without driving it; another waited 16 months after the first airbag replacement was itself recalled as defective. Ford and dealers shift blame, manufacturers provide case numbers but no parts, and no loaner vehicles are offered.

Separate incidents show airbags failing to deploy or only partially deploying during frontal collisions—one rear-end impact at 50 mph where only the driver-side bag fired, one 60 mph head-on guardrail strike where no bags deployed. One owner sustained a wrist fractured in eight places from harsh airbag deployment at 35 mph; another reports airbag debris that burned and gouged her arm.

Several owners received dangerous instructions: Ford's official recall letters tell drivers not to allow anyone in the front passenger seat while waiting for parts. Multiple owners were denied warranty service because dealers demanded diagnostic fees upfront, or refused service altogether citing regional restrictions. One dealership replaced only one of two recalled airbags, returned the car as if complete, and ignored subsequent inquiries.

Incomplete repairs and dealer negligence compound the issue. One owner's dealership performed the Takata recall but never diagnosed an overheating thermostat that stranded him 19 hours from home—work he thought was done turned out to be dangerously incomplete.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata Inflator Part Unavailability / Extended Recall Delays

Multiple owners report extreme delays in receiving replacement airbag inflators for Takata recall campaigns (15V319000, 16V384000, 17V024000, 08V082000, 16S26). Dealers confirm parts are unavailable, manufacturers cannot provide timelines, and owners are forced to drive unsafe vehicles for months or years waiting for parts.

When: 2015–2018, across 15+ owners

Symptoms owners cite: No parts available at dealership; Repeated delays and vague timelines ("when available", "3–6 months maybe"); Told to check back monthly with no concrete answer; Manufacturer unable to confirm estimated delivery; Owner garaged vehicle for 3 years due to lack of parts

Codes mentioned: 15V319000, 16V384000, 17V024000, 08V082000, 16S26

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement airbag inflators required; parts unavailable from supplier. One owner reported $0 out-of-pocket when parts finally arrived; another forced to pay for unrelated repairs while waiting.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall campaigns issued (15V319000, 16V384000, 17V024000, 16S26, 08V082000); Ford provided case numbers (e.g., CAS13097713, CAS12729115) but could not deliver parts. TK Holdings (Takata parent) filed bankruptcy. No loaner vehicles offered; no compensation.

Airbag Warning Light (Intermittent or Persistent)

Owner reports airbag warning light illuminated intermittently from within first year of ownership. Dealership services included battery terminal corrosion cleaning and airbag system reprogramming, neither of which resolved the light. Eventually attributed to faulty sensor; replacement sensor unavailable until after warranty expired.

When: First year of ownership; warranty expired July 2008

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light comes on randomly, unpredictably; Light may not appear for days, then returns; Persists despite battery service and system reprogramming

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership replaced battery terminals (anti-corrosion treatment) at customer cost; reprogrammed airbag system. Later advised sensor replacement needed but part unavailable. Warranty expired before fix could be completed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Airbag recall reprogramming performed; sensor eventually identified as root cause but no replacement part available before warranty lapsed.

Airbag Deployment Failure During Crash

Two separate collision incidents where airbags failed to deploy or only partially deployed during frontal impacts. In one case, driver-side airbag deployed but other airbags did not after rear-end collision at 50 mph. In another, no airbags deployed during head-on guardrail collision at 60 mph despite Takata recall status.

When: One at ~50 mph rear-end collision; one at ~60 mph head-on guardrail impact

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags failed to deploy in frontal crash scenarios; Partial deployment (driver-side only) while passenger-side failed; Smoke observed from deployed airbag; Occupants sustained injuries (arm injury, leg injuries, bruising)

Codes mentioned: 15V319000, 16V384000

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle towed after incident. No diagnostic or repair performed at dealership. One vehicle destroyed; occupants sustained injuries requiring no medical attention in one case, leg/chest/arm injuries requiring medical attention in another.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall campaigns applied (15V319000, 16V384000); parts unavailable for remedy. Manufacturer not contacted in one case.

Harsh Airbag Deployment / Injury from Deployment

Owner reports airbag deployed during 35 mph frontal impact but deployed with enough force to break her wrist in eight places and burn skin off her arm. Required insertion of seven pins and rods; permanent mobility loss in wrist. Owner states newscast indicated recall was pending for harsh deployment and FMVSS non-compliance.

When: At ~31,000 miles; deployment during 35 mph frontal impact; safety recall anticipated as of February 27, 2008

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag deployed during collision; Excessive deployment force caused wrist fracture (8 breaks); Severe skin burns on arm; Permanent reduced range of motion in wrist

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle destroyed. Surgery required: seven pins and rods inserted in wrist; permanent reduction in mobility.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Newscast indicated safety recall for harsh deployment and FMVSS non-compliance was anticipated but no formal recall details provided in narrative.

Recalled Airbag Replaced With Same Defective Part / Incomplete Recall Repair

Dealership replaced recalled driver-side airbag under recall 14B09, then owner received second notice that replacement airbag was also defective under recall 15S21. Owner reports second replacement parts unavailable for extended period (over 1 year). Separate case where dealership replaced only one airbag but returned car with impression both were done; owner continued receiving recall notices and had to contact again for second airbag.

When: Initial replacement 3/25/15; second recall notice July 2015; parts still unavailable as of 6/30/16. Incomplete repair case unspecified timeline.

Symptoms owners cite: First replacement airbag also recalled as defective; Second parts delivery extremely delayed (15+ months waiting); Incomplete repair: only one airbag replaced despite two needed

Codes mentioned: 14B09, 15S21

Repairs/costs cited: Driver-side airbag replaced 3/25/15; replacement also defective and parts for second fix unavailable. Incomplete repair: dealership replaced one airbag, returned vehicle suggesting both were done; customer continued receiving notices.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recalls 14B09 and 15S21 issued; Ford stated parts unavailable and "very near future" for delivery as of 6/30/16 (16 months after initial repair). No loaner offered; asked if safe to drive, Ford did not answer directly.

Dealer Refusal to Service Recall / Warranty Denial

Dealership refused to diagnose or repair airbag problem under existing warranty, demanding customer pay for diagnostic fee first. Phone confirmation indicated repair was under warranty, but dealership would not service without upfront diagnostic charge. Separate case where dealership would only service Takata recall for vehicles registered in high-humidity states (FL, HI, PR, USVI), refusing service to others despite same defect.

When: Warranty active but dealership refusal occurred; geographic restriction for certain owners

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light flashing steadily; Dealership demands payment for diagnostic despite warranty coverage claim; Geographic restriction: refused service for out-of-state vehicle despite same defect

Repairs/costs cited: No repair performed. Dealership refused to diagnose airbag issue under warranty, demanded diagnostic fee upfront.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall notice received. Dealership claimed warranty coverage but refused to service without diagnostic payment. Manufacturer restricted recall to specific high-humidity states (FL, HI, PR, USVI), denying service to vehicles registered elsewhere.

Passenger Airbag Disabled / Unsafe Operating Restriction

Multiple owners with recalled passenger-side airbags cannot use front passenger seat while awaiting parts. Ford's official recall letter instructs owners "DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO SIT IN THE FIRST ROW PASSENGER SEAT" until repair available, which can be 1+ years. One owner reports being unable to transport family members safely; another confined to single-occupant driving.

When: Recall notices issued 2016–2017; restrictions in place 1+ years while awaiting parts

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger seat unusable for safety reasons; Family transportation impossible; One-person vehicle for extended period

Codes mentioned: 16V384000, 16S26

Repairs/costs cited: No repair possible; passenger-side inflator parts unavailable.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 16V384000 and 16S26 issued with safety warning label. Ford stated "PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD RUPTURE DURING DEPLOYMENT IN A CRASH AND CAUSE INJURIES OR DEATH." No loaner vehicle offered; Ford stated not their responsibility for replacement transportation.

Airbag Debris Emission / Chemical Burn During Deployment

During rear-end collision (September 2014), airbag deployed and emitted debris that burned and gouged occupant's arm up to elbow. Airbag was not replaced after collision; was stuffed back into housing and taped shut. Seat belt also locked in one position due to deployment.

When: September 2014; at time of collision

Symptoms owners cite: Debris emitted from airbag during deployment; Severe burn marks and gouges on arm; Seat belt locked in position post-deployment

Codes mentioned: 14V-802, 15V-319

Repairs/costs cited: Airbag not replaced; stuffed back into housing and taped shut at body shop (due to pending recall). Seat belt required manual adjustment.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recalls 14V-802 and 15V-319 issued. Dealership refused to replace airbag citing previous deployment.

Takata recall -this recall was communicated in july, 2016. Since then, I have contacted my local dealer numerous times. I'm being told that a replacement is not available. In december, 2017, I get another notice saying the airbags are defective and not to allow a passenger in the car. To wait over a year and still no resolution to the defect is unacceptable!

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2005 Ford Mustang?

It's a meaningful issue. 276 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 52 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 34,517 and 100,000 miles, with the median around 61,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 34,517; a quarter make it past 100,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
