What stands out

No new NHTSA airbags complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 9 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

The most common complaint is a failed airbag sensor/diagnostic module (SDM, part 12249649) that disables the entire airbag system. In water-damage cases, owners describe rainwater leaking from clogged roof drainage channels that run behind or near the driver's seat. The SDM sits directly underneath on the floorboard, gets soaked, and stops working. When it fails, the airbag warning light stays on, and the system won't function. In one documented collision at 30 mph, the airbags never deployed despite impact.

Owners also report the airbag warning light coming on without any accident—sometimes right after the vehicle sits parked, sometimes at highway speeds—and dealers diagnose a bad SDM that needs replacement. The critical problem: General Motors discontinued the 2005 H2 SDM years ago. Parts from earlier or later model years don't fit. Multiple owners say they've contacted GM and gotten no help; no recall has been issued. One owner noted Takata recalls for airbags didn't include the H2. When the module fails, related electrical systems often malfunction too—windows, door locks, gauges. Owners are driving around with inoperative airbags and no path to repair.

Failure modes owners describe

Airbag sensor/diagnostic module (SDM) water damage from roof drainage leak

Water from clogged roof drainage system pools on the driver-side floorboard and floods the airbag sensor diagnostic module mounted directly under the driver's seat. This ruins the module and disables the airbag system entirely.

When: Occurs after rain; mileage varies (61,000–113,687 mi reported)

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminates and stays on; Service airbag message on driver information center; Airbags will not deploy in a crash; Related electrical failures (windows, locks, gauges stop functioning); Module malfunction disables communication between other vehicle modules

Codes mentioned: SRS system failure, Impact sensor failure, 12249649 (part number for 2005 H2 SDM)

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement SDM module required; however, GM has discontinued manufacturing the 2005 H2 SDM (part 12249649). Earlier and later model year modules do not fit. No replacement parts available through GM dealers or independent shops.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM contacted by multiple owners; response reported as 'sorry' with no assistance. No recall issued. No alternative repair offered.

Airbag warning light illumination without crash

Airbag warning light turns on and remains illuminated while driving, despite the vehicle never being in an accident. No clear trigger mechanism identified in several complaints.

When: Occurs at various mileage points (83,550–130,000 mi); some instances after vehicle sits parked overnight

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light on dashboard illuminates and stays on; Message states airbag needs servicing; Light sometimes blinks continuously; Vehicle has not been in any collision

Codes mentioned: SDM fault, Airbag system failure code

Repairs/costs cited: Owners taken to dealers or independent shops; diagnosis indicates SDM replacement needed, but parts unavailable.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM offers no assistance when contacted. No recall issued.

Airbag system failure following collision

Vehicle struck in frontal collision; airbag warning light illuminates and airbags fail to deploy despite impact severity warranting deployment.

When: Occurred during 30 mph frontal collision; vehicle mileage 113,687

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminated after impact; Airbags failed to deploy during collision; Vehicle would not move forward after accident

Codes mentioned: Impact sensor failure, SRS system failure

Repairs/costs cited: Diagnosed with impact sensor and SRS failure; specific repair steps not documented.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified; no details on response or recall.

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2005 Hummer H2?

It's a meaningful issue. 12 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 8 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 83,550 and 130,000 miles, with the median around 110,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 83,550; a quarter make it past 130,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
