What stands out

Owners have filed 29 brakes complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering brakes on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

16188 Special Coverage. Some vehicles may have a condition where increased resistance in the body control module (BCM) connection system can result in voltage fluctuations or intermittency in the brake apply sensor (BAS) circuit that can cause brake lamp malfunction. Specifically, the brake lamps may either illuminate without the brake pedal applied, or turn off when the pedal is applied. If this condition occurs within the stated terms, dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to the BCM X2 (C2) connector and the BAS harness connector, and relearn the brake pedal home position. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2005 G6 brake system has three major problem areas that recur across dozens of complaints.

Rotor warping is the most common issue. Owners report rotors warp and wear prematurely, requiring replacement or resurfacing every 8,000–13,000 miles—well below normal. The failures cause pulsation, vibration, and grinding noise. Resurfacing stops the problem temporarily but it comes back within months. One owner's daughter replaced rotors four times with only 54,000 miles. Owners spend $600+ on brake work alone, and many repair costs come out-of-pocket because extended warranty does not cover brakes or dealers deny coverage.

Brake light switches fail and fail repeatedly. Lights stay on while driving and go off when the pedal is pressed—the opposite of normal. Dealers have replaced the brake light position sensor and brake pedal position sensor multiple times, lubricated the body control module, and still the problem returns. One owner had the issue "fixed" under a 2009 recall; the same problem recurred and the dealer refused to cover it again. A third brake light staying on continuously drains the battery.

ABS modules have failed, including one that caught fire and damaged electrical wiring. In another case, the ABS module began affecting front brakes, requiring replacement. Dealers report difficulty obtaining parts.

A fourth problem: the brake pedal becomes extremely stiff or hard to press, preventing gear shifts, and often co-occurs with light switch issues.

Failure modes owners describe

Brake rotor warping and premature wear

Rotors warp and wear prematurely, requiring replacement or resurfacing every 8,000–13,000 miles. Owners report pulsation, vibration, grinding noise, and shaking when braking. Resurfacing or replacement is temporary; the problem recurs within months. One owner reported warped rotors caused excessive pressure leading to a front left tie-rod snap and loss of vehicle control.

When: 7,900–54,000 miles; some failures within months of repair

Symptoms owners cite: Pulsing or bumping sensation when braking; Vibration and shaking in steering wheel and entire vehicle; Grinding or squealing noise during braking; Rotors visibly warped; Brake pads hardly worn despite rotor failure

Repairs/costs cited: Rotors resurfaced or replaced; costs cited $600+ for brakes with fewer than 13,000 miles. Some owners paid for repairs multiple times out-of-pocket after warranty expired or brake work denied under extended warranty.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM claims no defect despite owner complaints. Extended warranty does not cover brake repairs for some owners.

ABS module failure

ABS module burns up or fails, in one case catching fire and damaging electrical wiring. One owner reported the module burnt up and caught fire, requiring fire department response. Another owner reported the ABS unit failed and began affecting front brakes. Dealers report difficulty obtaining replacement parts.

When: Varies; one failure reported after about 4 months of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Brake pedal extends to floor without full stopping power; ABS module overheats and burns; Electrical fire in engine compartment; Loss of brake function affecting front brakes

Repairs/costs cited: ABS module replacement needed; dealer reported parts on extended back order. One owner's car was kept in shop for a month awaiting parts.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM refused to replace vehicle or extend warranty. One owner mentioned parts unavailable due to supply issues.

Brake light switch/sensor malfunction

Brake lights stay on while driving, go off when brakes are applied, or fail to illuminate when brakes are applied. Problem recurs even after dealer repairs. Some owners report inverted behavior: lights on during acceleration, off during braking. Dealers replaced brake light position sensor (BLPS) and brake pedal position sensor (BPPS) multiple times without permanent fix. One owner reported the issue was supposedly fixed under a recall but the problem returned.

When: Various; reported between April 2008 and after 2012

Symptoms owners cite: Brake lights remain on while driving; Brake lights fail to illuminate when pedal is depressed; Inverted brake light behavior: on during acceleration, off when braking; Third brake light stays on continuously, draining battery; Brake lights turn off while vehicle in drive, affecting all rear tail lighting

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers recalibrated brake pedal position sensor, replaced BLPS or BPPS multiple times, lubricated body control module (BCM) with dielectric lubricant. One repair cost $220; another dealer quoted $300.25 for BCM replacement. Fixes are temporary; problem recurs.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA recall 14V252000 issued for electrical/brake light issues; some owners reported parts unavailable for recall repair. One owner mentioned the issue was covered under a 2009 recall but refused warranty coverage for the recurrence, claiming it was a separate issue.

Brake pedal position sensor / shifter lock malfunction

Brake pedal becomes difficult or impossible to depress, preventing gear shift from park to drive. Owners report needing to press the pedal 2–3 times or with extreme force. Problem often co-occurs with brake light issues, suggesting a common sensor malfunction.

When: Timing varies; reported as ongoing or recurring

Symptoms owners cite: Difficulty shifting out of park until brake pedal is pressed multiple times; Brake pedal extremely stiff or hard to depress; Cannot use cruise control; Brake light malfunction co-occurring

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers replaced BPPS or recalibrated it; owners quoted $300.25 for BCM replacement. No permanent resolution reported.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: One owner reported GM initially denied warranty coverage for what was supposedly a recalled issue, asking owner to pay $300.25 out-of-pocket.

Brake caliper and related hydraulic system failure

Brake caliper seized or wore into rotor, causing brake fluid release and loss of stopping power. Pedal extended to floor without providing full braking force. Failure linked to ABS module failure in at least one case.

When: At 33,000 miles in one reported case

Symptoms owners cite: Brake pedal extends to floor; Gradual loss of braking power; Caliper seized on rear driver's side; Brake fluid leakage

Repairs/costs cited: Replaced brake caliper, pads, rotors, and brake fluid on affected wheel. Soon after, ABS module failure caused recurrence of failure.

Common questions

How serious is the brakes problem on the 2005 Pontiac G6?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 29 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $450 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the brakes typically fail?

Across the 19 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most brakes failures cluster between 16,000 and 74,600 miles, with the median around 37,272. A quarter of owners report trouble before 16,000; a quarter make it past 74,600. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $450 for brakes repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to brakes?

No active recalls currently cover brakes issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
