What stands out

Owners have filed 27 powertrain complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 5 model years of Saturn Vue in our records for powertrain problems, this one ranks #2 by owner-complaint volume.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering powertrain on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of 2005 Saturn Vues describe a pattern of transmission failures that start as early as 46,000 miles and recur relentlessly. The CVT transmission makes grinding noises, then loses power to move the car or gets stuck in a single gear. In several cases, replacement transmissions failed within 24 hours or within months, requiring multiple replacements at the same dealership. One owner experienced five transmission replacements over two years.

Slipping transmission—where the engine revs but the car won't accelerate—happens without warning, sometimes during merges into traffic. Saturn dealers told owners this is normal CVT operation, but owners found the problem absent during test drives and absent for a week after each oil change.

Shift linkage cables snap inside the transmission or fail repeatedly, leaving the car stuck in one gear even on freeways at highway speeds. Clutch and slave cylinders fail abruptly with no warning. The ignition key sticks and requires pliers and an hour to remove, and switching the key and ignition switch haven't fixed it.

Rear vibration at 30–40 mph persists even after GM dealer repairs. One dealer demanded $1,000 for engine block mounts that an independent mechanic found were fine.

Owners report a class action lawsuit and warranty extension to 8 years/100,000 miles, but most failures occur beyond that window, and GM dealers have refused repairs even under the extended period.

Failure modes owners describe

Transmission failure and repeated replacement

Multiple owners report transmission failures requiring replacement. In some cases, replacement transmissions fail within months, requiring multiple replacements (one owner experienced 5 replacements). Grinding noise often precedes failure. Some transmissions fail due to torque converter failure.

When: Between 46,000 and 86,000 miles; some failures occur in new replacements within 24 hours to 6 months

Symptoms owners cite: Grinding sound before failure; Loss of power to move vehicle; Vehicle will not engage gears; Engine revs but car won't move; Slipping transmission; Transmission stuck in one gear

Codes mentioned: Check Engine Light

Repairs/costs cited: $3,000–$5,000 for transmission replacement; owners cite $4,000 parts + $1,000 labor; CVT transmissions are difficult to source from independent shops

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Class Action lawsuit mentioned by dealer in 2014 with warranty extension to 8 years/100,000 miles; GM dealers refused repairs outside warranty; some owners report GM denying responsibility for recalls or refusing warranty coverage

Transmission slipping and loss of acceleration

Owners report intermittent slipping where engine revs but transmission does not engage, preventing acceleration. This occurs unpredictably and poses a safety hazard, particularly in merge situations. Saturn service stated this is 'normal operation' for CVT transmissions.

When: After 10,000–12,000 miles; repeats intermittently throughout ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Engine revs but no acceleration; Momentary loss of power during acceleration; Transmission slipping from Drive to Neutral; No power in Reverse on cold starts

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers could not replicate problem; owners report problem briefly resolves after oil changes; no repair provided

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealers told owners this is 'normal operation' for CVT transmission and declined repair

Transmission vibration and rear-end vibration

Owners report vibration in rear of vehicle at 30–40 mph. After initial GM repair, problem persists. GM dealerships refused further repair attempts even when repair bulletin was extended into 2015. One dealer demanded $1,000 engine block mount replacement before addressing vibration, but owner's independent mechanic found nothing wrong with mounts.

When: Varies; at least one owner complained for years without resolution

Symptoms owners cite: Vibration in rear of vehicle at 30–40 mph; Vibration at highway speeds after torque converter failure

Repairs/costs cited: $1,000 quoted for engine block mount replacement (not validated as necessary); independent mechanic found mounts were fine

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Initial GM repair did not resolve issue; GM dealers refused subsequent repair attempts despite extended repair bulletin; one referred dealer demanded expensive mount replacement

Shifting linkage/cable failure

Multiple owners report failure of transmission shift linkage or shift cable, leaving vehicle stuck in one gear or unable to shift properly. Linkage cables snapped inside transmission in at least one case. Problem recurs even after dealer repair.

When: 46,000 miles and beyond; can recur within 6 months of repair

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle stuck in one gear, cannot shift; Gear shifter becomes unresponsive; Cables snap inside transmission; Difficulty getting into 1st gear; Unable to select reverse

Repairs/costs cited: $448 and $336 for linkage cable/fork repairs; owner also cites $2,000 clutch replacement after forced downshift; repairs do not last

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealers repaired linkage under warranty initially, but repairs failed; no long-term solution offered

Clutch/slave cylinder failure

Owners report abrupt failure of clutch or slave cylinder while driving, with no warning. Vehicle loses the ability to engage gears safely.

When: Before 40,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: No clutch pedal response while driving; Slave cylinder failure

Repairs/costs cited: Clutch cylinder and concentric slave cylinder replaced; one owner paid for towing due to roadside failure

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Repairs performed by dealership after towing

Ignition switch key binding/difficult removal

Multiple owners report key sticks in ignition switch and is extremely difficult or impossible to remove without tools. One owner required over an hour with pliers to remove key. Problem persists after key replacement and switch repairs.

When: After approximately 1 year of ownership; ongoing issue

Symptoms owners cite: Key sticks in ignition; Key requires excessive force to turn or remove; Key falls out when knee hits it while engine running; Requires pliers to remove key

Repairs/costs cited: $108 for new key, cutting, and programming (did not resolve issue); ignition switch replacement attempted but refused by multiple dealers

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM acknowledged problem online but multiple dealer repair attempts were refused; owners noted this was odd given the broader GM ignition switch recall

Rough or jerky shifting

Owners report rough, jerky, or shuddering transmission behavior during acceleration or gear transitions, particularly between 1st and 2nd gear or during 25–40 mph acceleration.

When: At 54,000 miles; after 1 year of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Shudder or jerk in transmission between 25–40 mph; Rough 1st and 2nd gear engagement; Violent jerking and clunking when shifting after prolonged freeway driving

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer diagnosed torque converter failure requiring replacement; problem attributed to rubber shifting linkage

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealership diagnosed and performed torque converter replacement

On july 23, 2005, I had the oil seal replaced. The vue had been leaking oil in my garage and other places when I parked. I had to replace the ignition switch on two occasions and was almost unable to get the key to turn. Sometimes took up to 20 minutes or so. On july 22, 2006 I had the air conditioning condenser and seal replaced. It was over 100 degrees. I had to get a rental for this…

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2005 Saturn Vue?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 27 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $2,500 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 19 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 38,889 and 76,348 miles, with the median around 54,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 38,889; a quarter make it past 76,348. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
