severe NHTSA 06V180000 May 22, 2006

On certain passenger vehicles, the inner bezels of the headlamps were not properly assembled which may cause the turn signal lenses to be improperly positioned

An improperly positioned turn signal lens may reduce the intensity of the turn signal illumination, reducing its visibility to oncoming traffic, which may result in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the left and right headlamp assemblies free of charge. The recall began on june 26, 2006. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering lighting on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin 25-BD-012H TSB Nov 2025

This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2006 Sonata generates a high volume of lighting complaints spanning headlights, brake lights, and warning lamps. Headlight bulbs fail prematurely—one owner replaced them four times since 2006, including two failures after just months of use; another had both bulbs burn out simultaneously while driving a rural road at night. Aim is another headlight headache: some cars come from the factory blinding oncoming traffic, while dealer adjustments sometimes overcorrect so severely the road isn't lit. Manual adjustments per the service manual don't fix it.

Brake lights have their own saga. The stop lamp switch (recall 09V122000) was intended to fix brake lights that don't illuminate, but owners report lights still failing even after the repair was completed. One owner couldn't shift out of Park because the brake lights didn't work—a safety-interlock issue. The center brake light sits behind the rear deck with no user access; dealers charge $85+ to remove the entire deck or rear seat just to reach the bulb.

Multiple owners report clusters of failures hitting at once—ABS light, airbag light, check engine light, and brake light problems all lighting up within weeks of each other. One dealer eventually identified a faulty junction box. Hyundai's warranty on bulbs is 12 months or 12,000 miles; owners past that point are told to pay for repairs or buy a service manual to do it themselves.

Failure modes owners describe

Headlight bulb premature failure

Low-beam headlights burn out repeatedly. Owners report replacing them 4+ times, sometimes within months. One owner's bulbs failed simultaneously on a rural road at night, creating a hazard.

When: Early in ownership (starting from 1,100 to ~39,000 miles); some failed after a few months of use

Symptoms owners cite: Headlights burn out prematurely; Multiple replacements required; Both bulbs failing at the same time

Repairs/costs cited: Repeated bulb replacements; some owners replaced 4 sets since 2006. One independent mechanic found headlight assembly failure and fuse blowout during replacement.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai documented request under recall 06V180000 (Exterior Lighting) and 08E021000, though some VINs not included. Hyundai position: bulb warranty 12 months/12,000 miles for factory defect only; refuses to acknowledge systemic issue.

Headlight aim/alignment problem

Headlights either blind oncoming traffic or fail to illuminate the road adequately. Multiple dealer adjustments do not correct the problem; manual adjustment per service manual also fails. Owner verified excessive brightness by driving toward the vehicle in another car.

When: From factory and after multiple dealer service attempts

Symptoms owners cite: Headlights blind oncoming traffic excessively; Headlights too dim and do not illuminate road for usable distance; Lights aim too high (illuminate trees above road); Persistent problem after dealer and owner adjustment attempts

Repairs/costs cited: Multiple dealer trips resulted in different aim problems; manual adjustment per service manual did not resolve. Dealer stated 'new European style headlights' and nothing could be done.

Brake light switch failure / stop lamp malfunction

Brake lights fail to illuminate when brake pedal is depressed, or remain on when vehicle is off. One owner experienced recall 09V122000 repair that did not hold; another had lights that would not shut off even after repeated switch attempts. One case involved inability to shift out of Park due to failed brake lights.

When: Various mileages (37,000 to 117,000 miles); one occurred after previous recall repair

Symptoms owners cite: Brake lights do not illuminate when brake pedal pressed; Brake lights remain illuminated after vehicle turned off; Inability to shift out of Park due to failed brake lights; Lights flash intermittently

Codes mentioned: P0504

Repairs/costs cited: Recall 09V122000 performed on at least one vehicle but did not permanently resolve the issue. Dealer quoted ~$275 for repair; one owner reported dealer unable to confirm vehicle qualified for recall. Dealer service sometimes unable to diagnose.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 09V122000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic: Switches: Brake Light) issued. Case documentation shows Hyundai stated affected vehicles were not included in recalls. One source indicates Hyundai does not cover bulb replacement under this recall.

Center / third brake light bulb inaccessibility and failure

The center/third brake light bulb has no user access port and is difficult to reach. Bulbs burn out and require removal of entire rear deck or rear seat to replace, at dealership cost of $85+. One owner reported bulb appeared to work until next day, suggesting intermittent electrical issue.

When: By ~40,000 miles and beyond

Symptoms owners cite: Center/third brake light inoperative; Bulb burns out; Bulb works intermittently (appears on, fails next day); Possible intermittent electrical short

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership must remove entire rear deck or rear seat to access bulb for replacement. Cost approximately $85. One owner could not afford repair and left light inoperable while still under bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Automatic headlight mode malfunction

Automatic headlight mode does not function properly. Lights remain on after ignition is turned off and must be manually switched off each time, or engage inconsistently in AUTO setting without illuminating based on ambient light.

When: Early in ownership (1,100 miles); also reported at 62,000+ miles

Symptoms owners cite: Headlights remain illuminated after ignition turned off; Must manually turn off lights each time ignition is shut off; Lights turn on/off automatically based on ambient light (bridge shadow), making it unclear if lights are actually on; Side lights stay on in AUTO mode and take 15–20 minutes to turn off

Repairs/costs cited: Independent mechanic consulted but did not repair. One dealer diagnosed faulty junction box needing replacement.

Parking lights / side lights will not turn off

Parking lights or side marker lights remain illuminated when vehicle is off or in AUTO mode, sometimes intermittently. Owners report having to repeatedly cycle the light switch on and off to turn them off, or they stay on for extended periods.

When: Unknown specific mileage; reported during typical operation

Symptoms owners cite: Parking lights remain on after vehicle shut off; Parking lights will not turn off in AUTO setting; Must repeatedly cycle light switch on/off to extinguish; Lights stay on 15–20 minutes after shutting off vehicle

Brake light failure after recall repair

Owner underwent recall 09V122000 brake light switch repair but the brake lights continued to fail after the repair was completed. Dealer refused further service, claiming the recall work was already done.

When: After recall repair completion

Symptoms owners cite: Brake lights fail to illuminate despite recall repair; Defect persists post-repair

Repairs/costs cited: Recall 09V122000 performed by dealer; problem persisted after completion.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 09V122000 performed; dealer stated they could not do anything further since repair had already been completed.

Concurrent electrical / ABS / airbag warning light issues

Multiple owners report clusters of warning lights illuminating together: ABS/ESC light, check engine light, airbag light, and brake light failures occurring in the same timeframe. Suggests possible electrical or junction box fault affecting multiple circuits. One owner experienced ABS light illumination that caused brake lights not to illuminate.

When: Various timeframes; some start in May, July 2014, or after vehicle maintenance

Symptoms owners cite: ABS/ESC light comes on and off intermittently; Airbag warning light illuminates and stays on; Check engine light illuminates; ABS light illumination correlates with brake light failure; Multiple warning lights active at same time

Codes mentioned: P0504

Repairs/costs cited: One dealer suspected light switch; after one hour realized switch was fine and identified junction box as likely cause. Vehicle not repaired in most cases.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai stated affected vehicles were not included in open recalls despite owners identifying similar issues in recalls.

Common questions

How serious is the lighting problem on the 2006 Hyundai Sonata?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 29 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $250 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the lighting typically fail?

Across the 22 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most lighting failures cluster between 38,200 and 117,000 miles, with the median around 71,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 38,200; a quarter make it past 117,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $250 for lighting repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
