What stands out

No new NHTSA steering complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 10 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering steering on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin TT 45-09-03 Aug 2014

Tech Tips (Electro - Steering issues): If, after replacement of the steering rack, fault code 01309 008 is set in the ABS/ESP module only, follow the test plan in GFF for Driver Steering Recommendation (DSR) or channel 3 activation. If the test plan fails to clear the fault, follow the directions in this document

If the steering rack is replaced on the above models for any reason, it is necessary to replace the steering harness as well. The new harness may be equipped with an extra connector. If all connections are made correctly, then it is necessary to remove that connector and tape the exposed wires back into the harness. Be sure to tape tightly in order to provide a water-tight repair.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of the 2006 Jetta report two major classes of steering trouble. The first is electric power steering that cuts out without warning, often in hot weather or wet conditions. One owner lost steering entirely during acceleration and rolled the vehicle. Dealers acknowledge the computer logs the fault but refuse to repair unless the warning light is on when you drive in—a catch-22 that leaves owners stuck. Volkswagen says the warranty is dead once you hit higher miles and offers nothing.

The second class is mechanical looseness: steering racks that squeak, especially turning right; sub-frame bolts that weaken, causing wander and flex over bumps; and a persistent pull to the right after left turns, sometimes hard enough to cause crashes. One owner reports a stripped factory bolt on the drive shaft assembly holding the wheels to the steering. Several owners say dealerships brushed off these concerns as normal.

A few reports also flag exposed wiring in the harness itself and steering-wheel electronics that simply die, killing the horn and airbag function. The trend: steering systems that fail electrically, mechanically, or both, often leaving owners high and dry on warranty and support.

Failure modes owners describe

Electric Power Steering Failure — Intermittent Loss of Assist

Power steering assistance cuts out intermittently, typically in wet or salty conditions, or when ambient temperature exceeds 82°F in traffic. Vehicle becomes uncontrollable; steering wheel may lock up. One owner reports loss of steering during acceleration from stop, resulting in collision and vehicle rollover.

When: 36,000 to 103,000 miles; one case at 10,000 miles. Occurs on hot days or in wet/salty conditions.

Symptoms owners cite: Power steering assist disappears intermittently; Steering wheel becomes inoperable or locks up; Warning light illuminates intermittently; Loss of traction control, cruise control, ABS, and oil pressure gauge in some cases; Vehicle stalls or becomes uncontrollable

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers acknowledge computer shows failure but refuse repair unless warning light is illuminated at time of visit. One case required steering rack replacement (12/6–12/22). Wiring harness inspection revealed chafed wires with insulation worn through; positive starter cable also chafed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Volkswagen of America stated warranty expired, offered no assistance. No recalls listed.

Steering Wheel Electrical Failure — Controls Inoperative

Steering wheel electronics fail, disabling horn, airbag function, and wheel-mounted controls. Condition is a safety hazard due to loss of critical steering-wheel-integrated functions.

When: Mileage not specified in narrative.

Symptoms owners cite: Horn does not function; Airbag fault warning on passenger side; Steering wheel controls do not operate; Electrical malfunction in steering wheel assembly

Steering Rack Defect — Squeaking Noise and Loose Steering

Steering rack develops squeaking when wheel is turned, particularly to the right. In one case, stripped bolt on drive shaft (holding axle spindles and wheels to steering) was identified as factory malfunction. Sub-frame shifting causes popping noise when turning, leading to loose steering, wander, and severe flexing of front end over bumps due to weak sub-frame bolts.

When: 10,000 miles (squeaking); unspecified mileage (sub-frame shifting).

Symptoms owners cite: Squeaking noise when turning steering wheel to the right; Loose steering response; Steering wander; Popping noise when turning; Severe flexing of front end over bumps

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reports stripped bolt on drive shaft identified by VW tech support as factory malfunction; bolt replacement required. Another case notes weak sub-frame bolts contributing to lower control arm wear.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Tech support (Valencia Service Department) confirmed factory malfunction for stripped bolt.

Steering Pull and Drift — Vehicle Pulls Right After Turns

Vehicle pulls aggressively to the right after making left-hand turns or U-turns, with sufficient force to cause driver injury and damage to rim and tire. Vehicle also creeps or moves after being placed in Park with ignition off, even after driver exits. Two dealerships dismissed as normal operation.

When: Mileage not specified.

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle pulls to the right after left-hand turns or U-turns; Pull is aggressive enough to cause injury and vehicle damage; Vehicle moves after placed in Park with engine off; Vehicle continues to move after driver exits

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Two dealerships told owner this is normal.

Wiring Harness Degradation

Wiring harness shows chafing damage from plastic loom, with insulation worn through and wires exposed. Positive cable to starter also shows chafing damage with ground wire insulation compromised, creating short-circuit risk to battery.

When: Unspecified mileage; condition discovered during inspection related to power steering and electrical faults.

Symptoms owners cite: Exposed wires from chafed harness; Loss of electronic power steering; Loss of traction control and cruise control; Tachometer and oil pressure gauge malfunction; Potential battery short hazard

Repairs/costs cited: Owner inspected wiring harness after researching issue and discovered chafed wires.

My vw jetta has had issues losing electronic power steering on and off, typically when it rains or the roads have been salted and it is slushy or snowing. This last week I was driving and I lost traction control, cruise control, tachometer, ABS brakes and oil pressure. The car would not idle. Researching the issue, I found there may be an issue with the wiring harness. I inspected the harness…

Common questions

How serious is the steering problem on the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta?

It's a meaningful issue. 10 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $700.

At what mileage does the steering typically fail?

Based on the 10 complaints filed, steering issues most often appear around 82,821 miles. Some report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 with no symptoms. Maintenance habits matter — vehicles that received timely fluid services and were not regularly overworked tend to last longer.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $700 for steering repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to steering?

No active recalls currently cover steering issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
