Each bar shows the share of total complaints filed at that mileage range. Peak failure window highlighted. Some owners report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 miles symptom-free. Maintenance habits and driving conditions shift the curve as much as mileage alone.
Airbags accounts for 33% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 9 categories tracked.
Owners have filed 47 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
The vast majority of complaints center on Takata airbag inflator recalls (campaigns 16V071000, 16V364000, 17V020000) that owners cannot complete because dealers cannot obtain replacement parts. Multiple owners report waiting 6 months to over a year with no estimate from BMW for when parts will arrive; in some cases, wait times exceeded 14 months. One dealer stated the manufacturer was supplying only 100 parts per month. Owners feel unsafe driving vehicles flagged for inflator risk while awaiting repairs that never materialize.
A secondary theme is persistent passenger restraint system fault warnings. Owners report intermittent or constant dashboard messages claiming occupancy-sensor, seat-belt-tensioner, or belt-force-limiter defects at very low mileage (under 40,000 miles). Recall 13V564000 addresses this on 2004–2006 models, but 2007 X5s with identical symptoms are reportedly excluded. At least one owner was charged $1,300 out-of-pocket after BMW refused warranty coverage on a sensor replacement.
Two owners reported partial or complete airbag non-deployment in accidents, with one involving a pregnant driver and the other causing serious injury at low impact. One owner cited Takata recall concerns but was unable to complete the repair due to parts unavailability.

Failure modes owners describe
Takata airbag inflator — unavailable recall parts
Owners received recall notifications (campaigns 16V071000, 16V364000, 17V020000) for potentially defective Takata airbag inflators but dealers could not obtain replacement parts for extended periods. BMW stated parts were unavailable or in extremely limited supply (one case cited 100 parts per month). Multiple owners reported waiting 6 months to over a year without parts becoming available; some cases remained unresolved 14+ months after notification. Owners could not complete the recall repair and remained driving vehicles with unaddressed inflator risk.
When: 2016–2017 recall notifications; unresolved for 6–14+ months
Symptoms owners cite: Recall notification received but parts unavailable; Dealer unable to schedule or perform recall repair; No estimated date provided for parts availability
Codes mentioned: 16V071000, 16V364000, 17V020000
Repairs/costs cited: Recall parts not available from manufacturer; dealers could not order. Some dealers stated they would attempt interim repairs but parts for that were also unavailable.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recalls issued under NHTSA campaigns 16V071000, 16V364000, 17V020000 (Takata airbag inflators). BMW advised to contact dealers; dealers reported parts unavailable. No specific ETA provided by manufacturer in most cases.
Passenger restraint system fault — occupancy sensor and seat belt malfunction
Owners reported persistent warning lights indicating passenger restraint system faults, including passenger airbag and seat belt warnings. Diagnostic messages referenced occupancy-detection-mat (sensor) defects, seat belt tensioner faults, or belt-force limiter issues. Some owners reported the warning would come on intermittently at start-up and clear after driving; others reported it staying on continuously. Owners alleged the problem occurs on low mileage (under 40,000 miles) with light use. One owner was charged approximately $1,300 by a dealer for the repair after BMW refused warranty coverage.
When: Reported on vehicles with under 40,000 miles; ongoing intermittently or continuously
Symptoms owners cite: Passenger restraint system fault warning light on dashboard; iDrive screen displays 'PASSENGER RESTRAINTS SYSTEM FAULT'; Seat belt warning light illuminated; Warning message references airbag, belt tensioner, or belt-force limiter defect; Warning comes on at startup, may clear after driving or remain on
Codes mentioned: 13V564000
Repairs/costs cited: One owner cited approximately $1,300 repair cost for occupancy detection mat replacement. Owners requested BMW honor warranty coverage; BMW refused in at least one case.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA recall 13V564000 issued for 2004–2006 BMW X5 passenger restraint control module. 2007 models reportedly not included in recall despite identical symptoms. Owners requested recall be extended to 2007 model year. BMW dealers informed owners that affected 2007 vehicles were not associated with recall despite matching problem category.
Airbag non-deployment or partial deployment in accidents
In at least two reported accidents, airbags either failed to deploy entirely or deployed only partially. In one case, a 2007 X5 was involved in a serious interstate accident; only the steering wheel and curtain airbags deployed while the contact was pregnant and not fully restrained. The contact reported seatbelt failure to restrain and struck head on windshield. In another case, a crash at 25 mph into a traffic signal pole resulted in severe injury; the airbag system failed to deploy despite high-impact collision. Both incidents occurred at low mileage (22,000–accident mileage not stated for second case).
When: Reported at 22,000 miles and accident mileage (undisclosed); second case updated through 2017
Symptoms owners cite: Complete airbag non-deployment in accident; Partial airbag deployment (some airbags deploy, others do not); Airbag debris caused injury despite deployment; Occupants not adequately protected despite seatbelt use
Repairs/costs cited: No repairs documented in narratives; accidents resulted in vehicle total loss and injuries requiring hospital transport and ongoing physical therapy.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall issued for driver and passenger front airbag modules (recalls 16V071000, 16V364000). Owner contacted BMW December 2015 regarding recall but was told parts not in stock; follow-up contacts through 2017 found parts remained unavailable.
Passenger-side airbag indicator light with speed restriction
After starting the vehicle, the passenger-side airbag indicator illuminated and the vehicle displayed a warning not to accelerate above 55 mph. Vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Incident reported at approximately 78,000 miles.
When: At approximately 78,000 miles
Symptoms owners cite: Passenger side airbag indicator illuminated; Speed restriction warning not to exceed 55 mph
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer was made aware of the issue per the narrative.
Passenger-side airbag replacement needed — diagnostic-only visit
Owner took vehicle to independent mechanic where it was diagnosed as needing passenger-side airbag replacement. No repair was performed and dealer was not contacted. Reported at approximately 149,000 miles.
When: At approximately 149,000 miles
Symptoms owners cite: Passenger-side airbag warning light illuminated
Repairs/costs cited: Diagnosed as needing passenger-side airbag replacement; repair not performed.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer had been informed of the failure per narrative.

Common questions
How serious is the airbags problem on the 2007 BMW X5?
It's a meaningful issue. 47 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.
At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?
Across the 16 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 63,000 and 115,000 miles, with the median around 79,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 63,000; a quarter make it past 115,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to airbags?
No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
