What stands out

Of the 5 model years of Mazda B-Series we track for airbags problems, this one carries the most owner complaints on file — 36.

Owners have filed 36 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

The failure pattern owners describe

Starting in mid-2016, Mazda issued Takata airbag inflator recalls on 2007 B-Series trucks (campaign numbers 16V499000, 17V013000, and 21V162000). Across 34 documented complaints, the core issue is not an airbag malfunction or deployment—it is a parts shortage that left owners stranded for 12 to 24+ months.

Owners received recall letters and were instructed not to carry passengers in the front seat until repair was complete. When they called dealerships or Mazda's customer service line, they were told parts were unavailable with no estimated arrival date. Some owners reported calling multiple times over months or years with no progress. One dealership said the replacement part number did not exist. Another could not even access the ordering system.

Mazda stated it was prioritizing more common vehicles first, leaving B-Series owners in a queue with no visibility into when their turn would come. Customer service lines went unanswered. Dealer appointment scheduling disconnects happened too—owners showed up after confirming the part was in stock, only to learn it wasn't. One owner waited nearly two years. By early 2017, the NHTSA lookup page still showed the recall as "incomplete, remedy not yet available" despite the recall being issued months prior. Only one owner in the cluster reported successful part replacement, with no detail on how or when it occurred.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata Passenger Airbag Inflator - Parts Shortage and Recall Delay

Owners report an extended delay in obtaining replacement parts for a Takata passenger-side airbag inflator recall. Multiple owners waited 1–2+ years from initial recall notification (typically mid-2016) without parts becoming available at dealerships. The recall itself was never tied to an actual deployment or failure; it was a proactive safety campaign issued due to inflator degradation risk under humidity and temperature exposure.

When: Recall notifications issued June–August 2016; owners report waiting into 2017–2018 and beyond with no resolution

Symptoms owners cite: Recall notification received but parts unavailable for repair; Dealers unable to order parts or access ordering systems; Manufacturer unable to provide estimated timeframe for parts availability; Conflicting communication between dealer appointment scheduling and actual parts availability; Recall marked as 'incomplete, remedy not yet available' on NHTSA lookup page

Codes mentioned: 16V499000, 17V013000, 21V162000, 9616F

Repairs/costs cited: Recall remedy required replacement of passenger-side airbag inflator; no parts available at dealerships. One owner (Narrative #7) reported passenger airbag was eventually replaced, but timeline unclear. Some owners attempted to get parts ordered; one dealer (Narrative #29) stated the replacement part number did not exist.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata Recall campaigns 16V499000, 17V013000, 21V162000; Mazda issued recalls but could not supply parts for extended period. Mazda stated it prioritized more common vehicles over the B-Series. Manufacturer stated remedy part was unavailable and could not confirm when it would become available. One owner report indicated Mazda did eventually facilitate an appointment (Narrative #7). Dealership communication gaps noted (Narrative #4) where appointments were made without confirming parts were in stock.

This is a complaint about Mazda. I have brought my vehicle in 3 times, after they confirmed an appointment and stated they had the part. All three times it appears whoever makes the appointment doesn’t communicate with the dealer Service Center. I have the FOURTH appointment this Wednesday at Royal Motors, San Francisco. I will call a day ahead to make sure the part is there before I bring it in.…

Takata recall. I have a recall and it is suppose to be dangerous yet no one is fixing the issue. I am told they do not know how to fix it. Does not sound like rocket science, install a new passenger frontal air bag inflator.

Takata recall. It has been recalled for a takata air bag fix over 1 year ago and they tell me there is no fix as of yet.

Takata recall, no remedy has been made for this recall. The local dealership avoids phone call and will not return the phone call.

Takata recall I brought in me pickup to the dealership so I could get the recall complied with and was told they are only inspecting the component. They currently do not have the part to replace it. They s recall came out over a year ago. When can I expect the manufacturer to comply with this recall? This is taking to long.
