What stands out

Owners have filed 61 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

No new NHTSA airbags complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 13 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin NTB00042D Jan 2015

SERVICE INFORMATION Changes or modifications to the front seat assembly trim materials may affect the proper operation of the Front Seat-Mounted Side-Impact Supplemental Air Bags and Passenger Occupant Classification Sensor and could result in serious personal injury or death. Nissan STRONGLY RECOMMENDS AGAINST making any change to seat trim materials from the factory equipped condition. This specifically applies to replacing the seat trim with non-factory materials; adding leather/cloth seat covers, seat pads, or seat storage pouches, etc. around or over the seat back and the passenger seat cushion. Service Bulletin NTB12011C Mar 2013

Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Service Campaign on Model Year 2007-2012 Nissan Altima (L32) Sedan and Coupe vehicles to inspect the brake systems in vehicles with an illuminated brake warning lamp. Nissan dealers will inspect the brake system and confirm that no brake fluid leak is present. If no leak is present, the reservoir will be topped off. If a leak in the brake master cylinder is identified, the brake master cylinder will be replaced. The affected vehicles are equipped with a brake warning lamp that will illuminate to alert the driver when fluid in the brake fluid reservoir is low. Fluid in the reservoir may become low due to normal brake pad wear and not because of any brake syste

The failure pattern owners describe

The dominant complaint across 61 narratives is the passenger-side occupant classification system failing to detect adult occupants. The airbag "OFF" indicator light stays on or cycles on and off repeatedly when an adult (often 150+ lbs) sits properly in the front passenger seat—the exact scenario where protection should be active. This occurs 50–80% of the time during trips lasting 5–20+ minutes. Dealers have replaced the seat cushion up to three times, attempted computer resets, and replaced the OCS control unit without lasting success.

Nissan issued recall 08V521000 in October 2008 to address a faulty varistor in the OCS module, but many owners report their VINs were excluded despite experiencing identical failures. Even when repair was completed under the recall, the problem persisted in documented cases. Nissan and dealers repeatedly told owners the vehicles were "not affected" or "working as designed," or said they could not replicate the fault.

Several narratives also describe airbags that failed to deploy during actual crashes—head-on collisions at 30–50 mph, side impacts, and rear-end collisions—resulting in passenger and driver injuries and at least one fatality. One crash occurred at low speed with no warning lights beforehand; the vehicle had passed safety inspection 30 days prior. One narrative reported spontaneous airbag deployment at under 10 mph with no collision.

Failure modes owners describe

Passenger airbag off light illuminates/flashes with occupied seat

Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor or varistor malfunction causing the passenger airbag to disable when an adult is properly seated. Light comes on intermittently or stays on despite passenger weight well above 90-100 lb threshold. Problem occurs 50-80% of the time in regular use, sometimes for 20-30 minute stretches.

When: Began early in vehicle ownership; reported from 8,300 miles to 145,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger airbag 'OFF' indicator light illuminates when occupied adult seated; Light flashes or blinks intermittently; Light cycles on and off unpredictably over same trip; Occurs regardless of passenger weight (150+ lbs, some over 200 lbs); Occurs in normal, centered, upright seated position; Sometimes light stays on entire trip duration

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers replaced passenger seat cushion (3 times in one case, cost cited $2,123.88); replaced OCS control unit; computer resets attempted. Replacements did not resolve problem in multiple cases.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Recall 08V521000 issued for 2007 Altima OCS varistor defect. Many vehicle VINs excluded from recall despite identical symptoms. Nissan told owners vehicle not affected by recall or that repairs covered only under recall scope, refused responsibility when VIN excluded. Dealers stated 'working as designed' or could not duplicate problem. Some owners had recall repair performed but problem persisted.

Airbag non-deployment in crashes

Front, driver side, or passenger side airbags fail to deploy during vehicular collisions of varying severity (25-50 mph impact speeds, head-on collisions, side impacts, rear impacts). Vehicles had passed recent safety inspections with no warning lights illuminated prior to crash.

When: Incidents reported 2007-2015; some vehicles at 76,000-130,000 miles at time of incident

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags did not deploy on impact despite collision damage; No warning lights present before crash occurred; Multiple airbags failed to deploy in single crash; Passenger side airbag specifically failed in at least one multi-airbag deployment failure; Vehicle with history of passenger airbag sensor problems experienced non-deployment

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicles destroyed or total loss in incidents; bumper replacement identified in one case but not performed. No effective repair available post-incident.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer stated 'airbags do not always deploy upon impact' and offered no further assistance. No root cause investigation findings provided to owners.

Airbag deployment without collision

Airbag system activated and deployed when vehicle was stationary or traveling at very low speed with no impact or external damage evident. Driver was at neighborhood speeds under 10 mph.

When: Single report at low vehicle mileage

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags deployed spontaneously; No collision, impact, or external vehicle damage; Occurred at under 10 mph while slowly touring neighborhood

Repairs/costs cited: Owner requested investigation; Nissan refused to provide incident report or take responsibility.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Nissan refused to take responsibility and did not provide incident report despite owner requests. Told no escalation process available.

Defective airbag sensor—inverted logic

Occupant sensor displays reversed behavior: illuminates airbag off when seat unoccupied and activates when seat occupied, opposite of intended function. Also malfunctions with light objects (20-30 lbs) in seat without seatbelt.

When: Reported from early ownership through later model years

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag off light illuminates when no one in passenger seat; Airbag appears activated when seat unoccupied; Light flashes on and off with light objects (20-30 lbs) in seat; Replacement of seat cushion and computer reset ineffective

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer replaced seat from new vehicle and reset computer; problem recurred with same symptoms.

My 2007 Nissan altima 2.5 s has had a ongoing problem for more then a year now. The problem is when a passenger is in the passenger seat, the light stating air bag is off comes on. The individuals in the seat are over 100 pounds in weight. Nissan has told me the problem is with the way we are sitting and that the airbag "should" work. Should is not a option. The car has been in many times to…

Air bag light keeps blinking. On a 2007 Nissan altima no one is sitting in the seat. It cost $2,000.00. To replace. No don't have to be moving. It's when you turn the car on.

I own a 05 altima. Recently I was hit from rear, no injury, but air bag light came on. The car was sent for repairs and I was told that the rear end collision was not the cause of sensor failure but the fact the computer chip burned. My question is how long will this chip last and if you should give your customers a heads up on this information ? *tr

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2007 Nissan Altima?

It's a serious issue. 61 complaints have been filed, including 15 reports involving a crash and 2 fatality(ies). We've classified it as critical based on NHTSA's reported outcomes.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 31 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 20,000 and 106,000 miles, with the median around 76,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 20,000; a quarter make it past 106,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
