What stands out

Owners have filed 29 electrical complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 9 model years of Chevrolet Suburban in our records for electrical problems, this one ranks #3 by owner-complaint volume.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report pervasive electrical gremlins affecting 2008 Suburbans across multiple systems. Door lock actuators are the most common complaint—failing individually or in groups, leaving doors locked and inoperable or requiring manual entry. Several owners describe repeated failures affecting the same doors after replacement. Power window and sunroof motors exhibit erratic cycling; the sunroof story describes it moving back and forth uncontrollably.

A cluster of complaints centers on cascading electrical failures while driving: door locks cycling rapidly, instrument gauges flashing, drivetrain shifting between Park and Drive without input, radio and clock malfunctioning, engine surging or stalling, and warning lights illuminating. Owners report these events can cause temporary loss of power, reduced throttle response, and loss of braking. Some incidents happen at highway speeds and resolve only after the vehicle sits or is restarted. A few owners link the issue to battery replacement as a possible trigger.

Rear hatch actuators lock up or fail to reverse when encountering resistance, creating a pinch hazard. Door handle exterior mounts break, and both front and rear door lock actuators suffer sequential failures—some within weeks of previous repairs.

Peripheral failures include a rear radio/control system smoking at an intersection, the battery draining every three days despite being good, and the instrument cluster clock not holding time. Dealer responses have been inconsistent: some service bulletins exist, but GM frequently denies coverage citing warranty expiration or blames aftermarket modifications.

Failure modes owners describe

Door lock actuator failure

Power door lock actuators fail, rendering doors unable to lock or unlock via remote, buttons, or keyless entry. Some doors lock and refuse to unlock; others cycle repeatedly or fail intermittently. Failures often occur in multiples (two, three, or all four doors) and may recur after replacement. Manual key operation remains available only for driver-side doors on some units.

When: Multiple owners report failures occurring within months of purchase or after a few years; one owner cites failure at 70,000 miles. Sequential failures appear within 6 weeks to months of prior repair.

Symptoms owners cite: Doors will not unlock with remote or power button; Doors will not lock automatically when vehicle shifts from Park; Locks cycle up and down repeatedly while driving; Locks operate intermittently or sporadically; Manual key required to unlock driver-side door; other doors must be unlocked by hand; Solenoids burn out

Repairs/costs cited: Owners report replacement costs of $90 per solenoid and up to $1,000 for two door lock actuator replacements (parts and labor). Dealerships perform replacements, sometimes at half price if warranty has expired. Replacements sometimes fail a second time.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM has recognized the problem involves faulty parts manufactured in China. Service bulletins exist but coverage is denied for vehicles out of factory warranty (36,000 miles). No recall has been issued despite multiple reports.

Cascading electrical system failure

A complex electrical fault causes simultaneous or rapid-sequence failures affecting multiple vehicle systems: door locks cycle, instrument gauges flash, transmission shifts display shows Park/Drive fluctuating, radio stops working, engine surges or loses power, and warning lights illuminate. Events often occur during low-speed driving and may trigger Check Engine light. The vehicle sometimes recovers after restart or sitting; sometimes engine stalls completely.

When: Events occur at various mileages; one documented at 70,000 miles, another triggering Check Engine light at unknown mileage. One owner reports the issue began in December 2019 and continued into 2020.

Symptoms owners cite: Door locks cycle rapidly up and down while driving; Instrument cluster gauges flash erratically; Radio stops working; Transmission selector shows rapid Park-to-Drive cycling on display; Engine surges or throttles unexpectedly; Engine loses power or stalls without warning; Check Engine light flashes or illuminates; Stabilitrac warning illuminates; vehicle decelerates; Braking ability seized or lost during event; Starter will not crank immediately after stall; Engine power momentarily reduced

Codes mentioned: Check Engine (multiple complaints reference illumination)

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reported battery replacement preceded the issue; another had an aftermarket DVD player disconnected and wires repaired by Chevrolet with no resolution. Dealerships have kept vehicles in shop for over 8 weeks attempting diagnosis without success. One independent shop blamed power control module malfunction; vehicle was not repaired.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealers blamed aftermarket DVD installation and advised radio replacement (which did not resolve the broader electrical issue). A service bulletin (PIT-4730A) and NHTSA item number 10036550 are cited by owners as existing but unresolved. GM denies warranty coverage for out-of-warranty vehicles. NY Times published an article summer 2010 addressing electrical system problems in this year group.

Sunroof/moonroof motor failure

The sunroof motor cycles erratically, moving the roof panel back and forth repeatedly without driver input, unable to reach a fully closed or open position.

When: Failure noted shortly after vehicle was purchased as used in 2008.

Symptoms owners cite: Sunroof moves back and forth repeatedly without stopping; Sunroof cannot be closed properly

Repairs/costs cited: No repair described in the narrative.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Chevrolet refused to assist; owner reports calling Chevrolet multiple times over years with no resolution.

Rear hatch actuator failure

The rear hatch power actuator fails to operate, leaving the hatch locked and inoperable, or operates but fails to reverse when encountering an obstruction, creating a pinch hazard.

When: Two separate failures reported; one incident involved a dog caught in the hatch.

Symptoms owners cite: Rear hatch cannot be opened via console button, key fob, or exterior handle; Hatch stuck in locked position; Hatch closes on obstruction without reversing; Hatch motor does not sense resistance

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer replaced struts in one case, resolving the no-reverse issue. Another owner reported being told repair would be at owner expense; cost not stated.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM customer service indicated local dealerships will repair at owner expense. One owner notes that tens of thousands of complaints have been filed with GM over 2 years without recall.

Exterior door handle failure and mounting bracket breakage

Exterior door handles break or become inoperable; mounting brackets on all four exterior handles break, making it necessary to open doors carefully to avoid complete handle failure.

When: Rear handles failed within first years of ownership; mounting brackets broke at unknown time. One failure at 50,000 miles (half price repair due to warranty expiration).

Symptoms owners cite: Left and right rear exterior door handles inoperable; All four door handle mounting brackets broken or cracked; Handles at risk of breaking completely

Repairs/costs cited: Left and right rear handles replaced at dealership at half price (parts and labor) once warranty expired. New part numbers are available per owner research.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recall; GM is aware of defective parts per owner research.

Engine stalling and crankshaft position sensor failure

Engine stalls suddenly while driving at low speeds without warning. One diagnosed failure involved a crankshaft position sensor. Another involved spark plug failure potentially linked to oil spillage.

When: One reported at 94,000 miles; another at 70,000 miles.

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stalls without warning; Engine stalls again shortly after restart; Check Engine light illuminates; Difficulty restarting after stall

Codes mentioned: Crankshaft position sensor failure (code not specified)

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reports a crankshaft position sensor failure diagnosis. Another was diagnosed with spark plug failure; plugs were replaced multiple times without resolution.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: A recall (GM Recall No. 06083) exists for this condition but does not cover the 2008 model year of this owner's vehicle. Manufacturer not identified as taking corrective action for out-of-warranty vehicles.

Radio and audio system malfunction

Radio stops keeping time when vehicle is off, stops working altogether during electrical events, and in two cases a rear radio/control system overheated and smoked.

When: Clock issue began shortly after battery replacement in one case. Smoking incidents occurred while vehicle was stopped at intersection.

Symptoms owners cite: Radio clock does not keep time when vehicle is off; Radio stops working during electrical events; Rear radio/control system began smoking; Heated seat function affected (in one case)

Repairs/costs cited: One dealer advised radio replacement; problem recurred. Owners of smoking units have not had systems inspected.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer recommended radio replacement without addressing underlying electrical issue.

Battery drain

Battery drains and goes dead every third day when vehicle is not in use, despite battery testing as good.

When: Timing not specified.

Symptoms owners cite: Battery dead every third day during non-use; Battery tested and confirmed good

Repairs/costs cited: No repair described.

Common questions

How serious is the electrical problem on the 2008 Chevrolet Suburban?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 29 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $850 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?

Across the 25 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most electrical failures cluster between 45,000 and 77,200 miles, with the median around 56,569. A quarter of owners report trouble before 45,000; a quarter make it past 77,200. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to electrical?

No active recalls currently cover electrical issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
