No new NHTSA electrical complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 11 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin PIP4723J Oct 2024

This Preliminary Information communicates to the dealer the process for downloading or updating operating software for the Tire Pressure Monitor, Active Fuel Injector tester, multi media tester, PICO Scope, GR8 starting/charging tester and Vehicle Data Recorder tools, giving website address and step by step instructions to complete the update.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2008 GMC Canyon electrical system shows a cluster of failures that keep owners stranded and frustrated. The dominant complaint is the Passlock/theft deterrent system locking the engine out for exactly 10 minutes, whether the vehicle is stolen or not. Owners report the ignition switch fails to engage the starter at very low mileage—one owner had only 14,769 miles when the switch went bad. Some owners bypass the theft deterrent entirely by cutting the security wire, a clear sign of desperation.

Brake light switches are another pattern: they either fail to illuminate the lights when braking (creating a safety hazard) or stay illuminated after the truck is parked, killing the battery dead. A recall exists for this on other GM vehicles, but the 2008 Canyon is excluded. Owners have replaced batteries twice in a year trying to solve the parasitic drain.

The AC blower wiring harness and resistor have melted completely in at least one case, spraying plastic into the cabin. Taillight bulb sockets melt and burn out repeatedly. Dashboard lights, radio, and cruise control cut out intermittently. The tire pressure monitor and check engine light illuminate for no clear reason. Dealers cannot fix problems they cannot reproduce, leaving owners paying out-of-pocket for ignition switches ($380–$386) and other repairs that online searches suggest should have been recalled long ago.

Failure modes owners describe

Passlock/Theft Deterrent System—No-Start Lockout

Theft deterrent system activates unexpectedly and prevents engine start for approximately 10 minutes, even without theft occurring. Owners report the vehicle's fuel pump is disabled during this period. The condition is intermittent and recurs multiple times per week. Owners suspect oxidation of cheap nickel-plated ignition switch contacts rather than gold-plating, causing false theft detection.

When: Intermittent; owners report onset within first year or two of ownership; affects vehicles with low mileage (one owner had 14,769 miles)

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle will not start when key is turned; Theft deterrent light flashes on dashboard; 10-minute wait required before engine will start; Occurs multiple times per week in some cases; Fuel pump shut off during lockout period; Hazardous in emergency situations, particularly when vehicle is trapped (construction traffic, barriers)

Repairs/costs cited: One owner paid $380 for Passlock replacement at dealer; another paid $386 for ignition switch replacement at dealer. Some owners bypass system by cutting wire to theft deterrent module, disabling anti-theft function entirely.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM indicated no recall available; directed owners to dealer for diagnosis. Service campaign exists for other model years/makes but not for 2008 Canyon.

Ignition Switch Failure—No-Start Condition

Ignition switch becomes defective, preventing starter engagement. Computer codes indicate defective switch. Occurs at unusually low mileage (14,769 miles on one vehicle), suggesting early design or manufacturing defect.

When: Within first 1–2 years of ownership; one documented at 14,769 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Turning key results in no starter engagement; Dead battery indication on dash despite battery being new and fully charged; Engine will not turn over; May require jump start to temporarily enable operation

Codes mentioned: Computer code indicating defective ignition switch

Repairs/costs cited: Ignition switch replacement cost documented at $386 at GM dealer.

AC Blower Motor Circuit—Wiring Harness and Resistor Melting

Blower motor wiring harness and resistor overheat and completely melt, releasing smoke and plastic particles into the cabin. Most blower speeds fail to respond; AC only functions at highest speed (speed 4) before being shut off. Owner replaced wiring harness and resistor themselves; both parts functioned normally afterward, but owner expressed concern about premature failure recurrence.

When: Mileage not provided; occurred while vehicle was in use at highway speeds (70 mph)

Symptoms owners cite: Burning odor while driving; Smoke and plastic particles emitted into cabin; AC speeds 1–3 unresponsive; speed 4 functional only briefly; Wiring harness visibly melted; Resistor completely melted

Repairs/costs cited: Owner replaced wiring harness and resistor out-of-pocket; parts functioned correctly after replacement. Dealer visit was not performed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer stated no recall but suggested dealer diagnostic testing; service campaign for this failure exists but does not cover 2008 Canyon.

Ignition System—Unintended Engagement and Battery Drain

Ignition engages on its own while vehicle is parked and locked, with no key in the ignition. Radio plays, door-open chime sounds as if key is in ignition, and battery drains dead. Problem is intermittent and cannot be reproduced at dealer, preventing diagnosis.

When: Intermittent; occurs over several years of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Radio plays while vehicle is parked and locked; Door-open chime sounds as if key is inserted (but key is absent); Battery drained dead without obvious cause; Intermittent—occurs on occasions, not consistently

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Multiple dealer visits resulted in inability to reproduce problem; dealers stated they could not perform repairs without duplication.

Cruise Control Malfunction

Cruise control disengages unexpectedly while driving on highway or stops functioning entirely. When inoperative, the green dash indicator does not illuminate even when owner attempts engagement. One case occurred initially as intermittent disengagement; another involved total failure with no response to engagement attempts.

When: One intermittent failure over several years; one total failure onset unclear

Symptoms owners cite: Cruise control disengages without warning while driving highway; Green dash illumination indicator does not light when engaged; Complete failure to engage even after multiple attempts; Fuses confirmed good

Brake Light Switch Failure—Lights Stay On or Do Not Illuminate

Brake light switch fails, causing two distinct failure modes: (1) brake lights do not illuminate when brake pedal is applied, creating a safety hazard; (2) brake lights remain illuminated after vehicle is parked and shut off, draining battery dead. Owners report no warning indicator that brake lights are inoperative. A recall exists for this issue but does not include the 2008 Canyon, despite the same failure occurring.

When: Intermittent for switch staying-on problem; occurs after vehicle is parked

Symptoms owners cite: Brake lights do not illuminate when brake pedal is pressed; Brake lights remain on continuously after vehicle is parked and shut off; Brake light switch sticks at brake pedal; No operator warning that brake lights are non-functional; Repeated battery drain resulting in dead battery stranded conditions; Multiple battery replacements needed over short periods (two batteries in 12 months reported)

Repairs/costs cited: Volt meter testing by owner confirmed brake light switch defective. Recall exists for this failure on other GM vehicles, but 2008 Canyon is not included.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall exists for brake light switch issue on other vehicles but does not cover 2008 Canyon despite identical failure.

Taillight Bulb Socket Melting

Taillight bulb socket overheats, melts, and burns out. Owner experienced extremely high rate of bulb failure—approximately one bulb per month over several years—before dealer discovered the socket itself was the problem, not the bulbs.

When: Recurring over several years of ownership; replaced bulbs at approximately one-per-month rate

Symptoms owners cite: Taillight bulbs fail repeatedly at unusually high frequency; Taillight socket melted and burned

Repairs/costs cited: Socket was replaced by dealer after discovery.

Security/Theft Deterrent Light—Nuisance Illumination

Security light illuminates on dashboard while driving or at rest. Owner reports the vehicle does not have a factory security system, making the light an erroneous warning. Light clears when vehicle is stopped and restarted.

When: Intermittent; occurs multiple times during ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Security light illuminates on dashboard without security system installed; Light stays on until vehicle is restarted; Clears when engine is shut off and restarted

Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)—Nuisance Warning

Tire pressure monitor light stays illuminated on dashboard continuously despite tire pressures being within specification. Owner maintains factory rims and tires per manufacturer specifications with no damage or leaks detected.

When: Continuous illumination; occurs after normal use and maintenance

Symptoms owners cite: TPM warning light always illuminated; All tires at proper pressure per manufacturer specification; No visible rim or tire damage; No pressure loss detected

Dashboard Lights and Radio Intermittent Failure

Dashboard lights and radio intermittently stop functioning after engine start, requiring the ignition switch to be wiggled to restore operation. Occurs in conjunction with no-start conditions.

When: Intermittent; occurs when vehicle fails to start

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard lights and radio do not function after engine start; Wiggling ignition switch restores functionality; Occurs in conjunction with 10-minute no-start lockout

Check Engine Light—Intermittent Illumination

Check engine light illuminates while driving during the first 20 minutes of operation and remains on, then extinguishes 15 minutes later without engine being shut off or restarted. Pattern suggests sensor or electrical noise issue rather than persistent fault.

When: Intermittent; occurs during driving

Symptoms owners cite: Check engine light illuminates during first 20 minutes of driving; Light remains on for approximately 15 minutes; Light extinguishes on its own without engine off or restart; No apparent vehicle performance degradation

The initial problem is that the vehicle ignition engages on its own while parked without the key being in the ignition. I would notice the radio playing on occasion. When I opened the door the bells sound like the key is in the ignition but it is not. On other occasions the battery would just be drained dead. I took it in to several different GMC dealer several times and each time I was told…

"tire pressure monitor"(tpm). The tpm is always illuminating on my dash. I check my tires plus the spare every month and nothing seems to be wrong with the inflation. I still have the factory rims, with the same tire size according to manufacturer but newer with no upgrades. No damage to rims or tires ever.

electrical · filed 11/09/2017

"brake pads/shoes" I had to replace the brake pads and shoes due to the binding, sequeling noise they were making. As a result I had to replace the rotors due to the damage. When I first start the truck and slowly leave my driveway, I could feel the binding and hear the sequeling. After driving 20 minutes this all goes away. Repairs $500.00 which it drives 100 percent better!

electrical · 75,000 mi · filed 11/09/2017

"cruise control" went out and I cannot find out where the problem is. The fuses are excellent. While I was driving I had the cruise control on, then all of a sudden for no reason the green illumination on the dash that let's me know it's on, was off. I tried to engage the cruise control again but that did not work. The green illumination on the dash does not come on anymore even as I attempt to…
