Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The overwhelming pattern in these 204 complaints centers on Takata airbag replacements that customers cannot obtain. Most owners received recall notices between mid-2016 and early 2017 but are still unable to schedule repairs because dealers consistently report parts are unavailable. Owners describe being told repeatedly to wait, call back, or check the NHTSA website—with no timeline provided.

Several narratives document the strain this creates. Some owners say Ford instructed them not to allow passengers in the front seat, limiting vehicle use. A few report the dashboard bubbling, swelling, or seams separating around the airbag area—physical deformation suggesting internal pressure. One owner mentioned a sensor fault (B2290 occupant classification system) triggering the airbag warning light.

Dealers offer no loaner vehicles or compensation for the months-long delays. A handful of complaints mention Takata/TK Holdings filing for bankruptcy, creating further uncertainty. One collision narrative reports the front airbags did not deploy during impact, raising questions about whether these bags will function if needed.

A small but significant subset of complaints describe separate brake failures—pedal loss of pressure during normal driving on various road surfaces—though these appear unrelated to the airbag component.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata frontal airbag recall—parts unavailability

Recall campaigns 16V384000, 17V024000, and 16V383000 issued for Takata frontal airbags; replacement parts have not been supplied to dealerships. Owners notified between July 2016 and January 2017 report that as of 2017–2018, dealers confirm no parts are available and cannot estimate delivery. Some owners received notices that repairs would be available in 'spring 2018' but this did not materialize.

When: Recall issued mid-2016 to early 2017; parts remain unavailable through 2018 in reported narratives

Symptoms owners cite: Unable to schedule recall repair months after notification; Dealers have no estimated date for parts availability; Manufacturer (Ford/Takata) unable to confirm parts delivery timeline; Owners instructed not to use front passenger seat; Dealers disconnected airbag warning light instead of replacing airbag

Codes mentioned: NHTSA 16V384000, NHTSA 17V024000, NHTSA 16V383000

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement airbags required per recall; no repair costs cited as work not performed. One owner noted full dashboard replacement would cost over $2,000 if cover damage required separate attention. Recall advertised as free but cannot be completed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall 16V384000, 17V024000, 16V383000; Ford offered up to $30/day rental car allowance (owners report they had to cover extra $6/day insurance). TK Holdings filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy; some owners received notices from TK Holdings directing them to safercar.gov or injury claim forms instead of remedy parts.

Dashboard deformation and airbag cover separation

Owners report dashboard bubbling, swelling, seams separating, and visible bulging around the passenger-side airbag area. Some describe the cover lifting or buckling upward over time. Dealership responses indicate heat exposure is a known cause but refuse repair, citing that the airbag light must illuminate before they will service it.

When: First noticed in 2014–2016; progresses over months to years. One owner in non-warm climate (Northeast Ohio) saw deterioration; Houston owner (hot/humid climate) cited as higher-risk zone.

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard cover lifting or peeling away from airbag area; Visible bulge or bubble in dashboard surface; Seams separating where airbag is located; Dashboard appearing as if it may collapse inward; Buckling or warping of cover material over time

Repairs/costs cited: Dealerships state only full dashboard replacement will resolve; estimated cost over $2,000. No other shops will touch it due to proximity to airbag. One dealership suggested adhesive/glue was used at manufacture but refuses to reapply it.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealerships acknowledge heat as the cause but claim no warranty coverage unless airbag warning light is illuminated.

Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor malfunction

Passenger-side occupant sensor failed, triggering continuous airbag warning light. Owner reports diagnostic code B2290—passenger seat occupancy detection fault. Owner rarely uses passenger seat, making the malfunction non-obvious until warning light appeared.

When: Occurred after vehicle sat for one month; light came on upon next use

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminated; Persistent airbag warning chime

Codes mentioned: B2290

Repairs/costs cited: Independent garage replaced sensor; cost not specified. Owner believes this is a widespread issue not listed in formal recalls.

Airbag warning light illumination—intermittent or persistent

Multiple owners report airbag warning light illuminating while driving at any speed, sometimes intermittently. Light may chime. In at least one instance, a dealership disconnected the warning light rather than repair or replace the airbag module.

When: While driving at various speeds; timing not specified in most reports

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminates on dashboard; Airbag warning light chimes; Light may illuminate intermittently

Repairs/costs cited: One dealership response was to disconnect the light instead of performing actual repair. No repair costs cited.

Airbag non-deployment during collision

One owner reports a vehicle crash into another car where the driver-side front airbags did not deploy. Vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle at approximately 35 mph after sliding on wet road conditions. Damage was $4,000. Owner is uncertain whether deployment should have occurred.

When: December 2017 collision at 35 mph on 35 mph road

Symptoms owners cite: Front airbags did not deploy during impact

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle repaired through insurance; $4,000 in damage to front end.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 16V384000 for airbags was outstanding on this vehicle; parts were not available at the time of accident.

On my dashboard, on the passenger side, there is a hole the part of the console pushed up where I think is the airbag. Plus my brakes are not working properly. I have to pump my brakes to make a complete stop. In icy conditions, I slow down while pumping my brakes lightly. I did not received any notices by mail on recalls. I've moved to a new location about 1 1/2 years ago. No accidents yet.

I'm just now getting a recall letter stating that parts for my car have been recalled and it appears as though they have known since july 2016. Additionally it states that they have sent me a previous letter which is entirely not factual and this is the first I'm hearing about it. Also there is no fix? So how am I suppose to trust the safety of my car when they can't even fix it for me? I also…

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2008 Mercury Milan?

It's a serious issue. 204 complaints have been filed, including 7 reports involving a crash and 1 fatality(ies). We've classified it as critical based on NHTSA's reported outcomes.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 42 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 67,950 and 125,412 miles, with the median around 100,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 67,950; a quarter make it past 125,412. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
