What stands out
Airbags accounts for 37% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 6 categories tracked.
Among the 7 model years of Chevrolet Suburban in our records for airbags problems, this one ranks #3 by owner-complaint volume.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on February 23, 2021. Second notification letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. The failure pattern owners describe
Buyer takeaway: A 2009 Suburban with this complaint cluster carries two serious, unresolved safety issues: a Takata airbag inflator recall spanning 5+ years with no parts available, and widespread dashboard cracking around the airbag zones that may interfere with deployment or create sharp projectiles. Avoid this vehicle until both the recall is completed and the dashboard defect is formally addressed by the manufacturer.
Owners of 2009 Chevrolet Suburbans report two main problems: a prolonged Takata airbag recall with unavailable replacement parts, and widespread dashboard cracking around the airbag deployment zones.
The Takata recall (NHTSA 16V381000, issued May 2016) involves propellant degradation in the airbag inflators, especially in hot, humid climates like Southeast Florida. Owners describe calling dealerships repeatedly over 2–3+ years with no resolution. Dealers consistently cite missing parts and no delivery timeline from GM. Multiple owners received official recall notices and letters directing them to dealerships, but encountered dead ends. Some dealers mention no repair exists for dual-canister systems. Owners express frustration that a major manufacturer cannot source parts for a safety-critical recall, particularly when children occupy the vehicle.
Dashboard cracking appears independently or alongside the Takata issue. Owners report cracks starting around 50,000 miles, initiating at stress points (seams near the passenger airbag cover, above the instrument cluster, driver-side area). The cracks grow over time as the vehicle flexes during normal driving and temperature cycling. One accident report noted the airbags did not deploy; the driver suffered whiplash and multiple bulged disks. Several owners warn that sharp dashboard shards could lacerate the airbags or become projectiles if an airbag deploys. One owner observed the passenger airbag warning light illuminating; another reported the passenger airbag not activating with a front passenger present and crack-induced "service airbag" warning messages appearing randomly.
Owners cite the hollow underside of the dash as a design flaw and question why a truck designed for towing and heavy duty cannot withstand normal stress.

Failure modes owners describe
Takata airbag inflator propellant degradation
Propellant inside Takata inflators degrades over time, especially in hot and humid climates, potentially causing the inflators to rupture during deployment and cause serious or fatal injuries. The inflators are installed in front airbag modules.
When: Recall issued May 2016 (NHTSA 16V381000); vehicles in service 2009 and later
Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light may illuminate; No functional symptoms until deployment; defect is latent
Repairs/costs cited: Replacement inflators required; owners report parts unavailable as of 2016–2021+. Multiple dealerships (Allen GMC, Friendly Chevrolet Dallas, Leson Chevrolet Harvey LA, Gilland Chevrolet Ozark AL, Simpson Chevrolet Irvine CA, Fremont Chevrolet CA, Curly GMC Lakewood NJ, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Buford GA, Youmans Chevrolet Macon GA, Bunnin Chevrolet, and others) confirmed no parts in stock. One owner mentioned PM Burt and GM customer service (Philippines-based) could not provide timeline. Dual-canister systems have no available remedy.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata Holdings Inc. filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy; TK Holdings directed owners to www.airbagrecall.com. GM directed owners to dealerships and stated remedy not yet available as of late 2017 and beyond. GM petitioned for inconsequentiality but states on its own website the serious hazard. Owners report GM stated airbags safe for driving while awaiting vendor selection.
Dashboard cracking around airbag zones
Plastic dashboard material cracks and splits at stress points, particularly around the passenger-side airbag cover and above the driver-side instrument cluster. The cracks initiate at seams and seams and propagate over time due to thermal cycling and vehicle flexing. The underside of the dash is hollow with no structural support, contributing to failure.
When: Onset reported around 50,000 miles; progressive with time and vehicle use; vehicles parked in sun continue to degrade
Symptoms owners cite: Visible cracks at seams near passenger airbag cover and driver-side above instrument cluster; Cracks extend across the full width of the dashboard; Dashboard material separates and becomes loose, flapping when cracked; Excessive vibration of loose dashboard pieces while vehicle is moving; Airbag warning light and 'service airbag' messages may appear (reported as secondary to crack-induced sensor disturbance); Passenger airbag may not illuminate/function with passenger present (one case)
Codes mentioned:
Repairs/costs cited: No field repair mentioned; full dashboard replacement would likely be required. Owners note that repairing cracks further damages the dash. Hundreds to thousands of similar vehicles (2007–2013 Tahoes, Suburbans, Avalanches per owners) reported identical cracking patterns. Crack pattern consistent across vehicles, suggesting manufacturing defect in plastic compound or design.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM denies a problem and refuses recall. Owners allege GM resists addressing the Takata recall partly because fixing it would require dashboard replacement, incurring higher costs.
Airbag non-deployment during accident
In one reported accident, the front airbags did not deploy on impact despite the vehicle being included in the Takata recall and the impact being sufficient to cause serious injury.
When: Accident at approximately 167,000 miles; vehicle had been under recall since 2016 with parts unavailable
Symptoms owners cite: Airbags failed to deploy upon collision impact; Driver sustained whiplash and multiple bulged disks in back requiring surgery; Vehicle drivable after accident
Codes mentioned:
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle had not been repaired for the Takata recall at the time of accident; manufacturer and dealer had not been notified of the failure.

Takata recall - I object to gm filing a petition for inconsequentiality. Gm's own website states"the propellant in some types of takata airbag inflators can degrade over time, especially after long term exposure in hot and humid regions. If the propellant degrades to a certain level, the inflators may rupture during deployment, causing serious or fatal injuries." as the vehicle has been located…

Common questions
How serious is the airbags problem on the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban?
It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 60 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $1,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.
At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?
Across the 24 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 61,500 and 160,100 miles, with the median around 84,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 61,500; a quarter make it past 160,100. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to airbags?
Yes — 1 active recall(s) cover airbags issues on this vehicle. Recall fixes are always free regardless of mileage or warranty status. Use the VIN decoder at the top of the page to check if your specific vehicle is affected.
