Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin NTB00042D Jan 2015

SERVICE INFORMATION Changes or modifications to the front seat assembly trim materials may affect the proper operation of the Front Seat-Mounted Side-Impact Supplemental Air Bags and Passenger Occupant Classification Sensor and could result in serious personal injury or death. Nissan STRONGLY RECOMMENDS AGAINST making any change to seat trim materials from the factory equipped condition. This specifically applies to replacing the seat trim with non-factory materials; adding leather/cloth seat covers, seat pads, or seat storage pouches, etc. around or over the seat back and the passenger seat cushion. See this bulletin for further detail.

SERVICE INFORMATION Information necessary to service the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) safely is included in the "RESTRAINTS" section of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for each vehicle. IMPORTANT: Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery terminals, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service on the SRS. See this bulletin for further detail.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of 2009 Nissan Sentras report a range of airbag failures that create real safety concerns. The most common issue is the airbag warning light illuminating or blinking without any accident, crash, or flood damage. Dealerships have blamed this on a faulty clock spring (also called spiral cable) that controls both driver and passenger side airbags, with some owners quoted replacement costs for the clock spring and front passenger control module.

More alarming are reports of complete deployment failure during actual crashes. One owner rolled their vehicle at 40 mph after a tire failure and states no airbags deployed. Another reports a frontal impact at 40 mph with zero airbag deployment. A third describes parked-car deployment—passenger side airbags firing without any accident while the vehicle was stationary with a door closing.

One owner reports the front passenger airbag failing to disarm when an 8-year-old child sits in that seat, a safety issue if a deployment were to occur. Nissan has issued two Technical Service Bulletins for some of these failures but no recall. One owner notes their vehicle matches the year included in the current Takata recall but tested negative. Dealers have been inconsistent: some claim they must replace the entire airbag to run diagnostics, while others provide no remedy despite being notified of failures.

Failure modes owners describe

Airbag Warning Light Illumination / Blinking

Airbag indicator light comes on or blinks while vehicle is operating normally, with no accident, flood, or fire history. Indicates a system fault preventing proper airbag function.

When: Various mileages; one reported at 98,400 miles; others without specific mileage stated

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light remains illuminated; Airbag warning light blinking when car is started; Light appears while stopping at red light with no impact

Repairs/costs cited: Dealerships have identified clock spring (spiral cable) and front passenger airbag control module as requiring replacement; owners report being told replacement of entire airbag module required before diagnostics can be run

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Two Technical Service Bulletins issued; no recall issued despite notification of failures; Takata recall mentioned but vehicle tested negative

Clock Spring / Spiral Cable Failure

The clock spring (steering column spiral cable) controlling airbag circuits fails, disabling both driver and passenger side airbag deployment. This is the root cause identified by dealerships for warning light issues.

When: Not specified by owners; one case at 98,400 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminated; Affects both driver and passenger airbag circuits; Makes vehicle unsafe to drive in event of crash

Repairs/costs cited: Spiral cable requires replacement; one dealer also cited front passenger airbag control module replacement needed

Airbag Non-Deployment During Impact

Airbags fail to deploy during actual vehicle crashes and collisions, leaving occupants without protection. Two separate incidents reported.

When: During impacts; one at 40 mph rollover after tire failure; one frontal impact at 40 mph

Symptoms owners cite: Zero airbag deployment during 40 mph rollover crash; No airbag deployment during frontal 40 mph impact; Vehicle total loss in one incident due to rolling

Unintended Passenger Side Airbag Deployment

Front passenger and rear seat airbags deploy without any accident or impact while vehicle is parked. Door closing triggered deployment.

When: While vehicle parked with no accident

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger side front and rear airbags deployed; Passenger side door airbags deployed; Triggered by closing passenger door while parked

Passenger Airbag Disarm Failure

Front passenger airbag fails to disarm when an 8-year-old child (67 pounds) is seated in the passenger seat, creating a hazard if deployment were to occur.

When: Ongoing issue with child passenger

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger airbag does not disarm when child seated; Child weighs 67 pounds

So I was driving my car at night and it was raining that day. My speed was 40mph when I was making left turn on a highway, and then all of sudden one of my back tire on the right pop. My car goes out of control and made 180 degrees turn. So I end up rolling my car. Luckily their was no one coming from other lane. At the end I was surprise that none of my airbag deploy. Also my car got total. *tr

The air bag warning light pop on when I was stopping for red light. The car has not been in a crash ,fire , or flood. The air bag module must be a manufacturer problem, this is not no routine maintenance problem. There are other Nissan models with same problem. Please don't let manufacturers get away with this, it is putting me and my passengers in very high danger. This is a item only…

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2009 Nissan Sentra?

It's a meaningful issue. 11 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 9 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 50,000 and 94,000 miles, with the median around 79,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 50,000; a quarter make it past 94,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
