What stands out

Owners have filed 29 engine complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 6 model years of Pontiac Vibe in our records for engine problems, this one ranks #2 by owner-complaint volume.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering engine on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2009 Pontiac Vibe's 2.4L engine—a Toyota 2AZ-FE unit—carries a piston ring design flaw that burns oil at roughly 1 quart per 1,000 miles. Multiple owners confirm this accelerates as mileage climbs, reaching 1 quart per 500 miles or worse at higher odometer readings. Toyota admitted the defect in its Matrix and Camry models and rolled out the ZE7 warranty enhancement to replace pistons and rings at no cost. GM, which sourced the same engine from Toyota for the Pontiac Vibe, refuses to acknowledge the problem or offer equivalent coverage. Two owners report engine seizure from unaddressed oil burn; one narrowly avoided a seven-lane highway incident when the engine failed.

Owners also report intermittent stalling at highway and city speeds, sometimes without stored diagnostic codes, making dealer diagnosis tough. One complaint details unintended 7,000 RPM racing in Drive, causing sudden forward movement into traffic—a repair attempt failed. A few owners cite check engine and traction control lights tied to PCM and oxygen sensor faults, and several smell exhaust or fuel vapors inside the cabin despite dealer assurance that nothing is wrong. Dealers consistently decline help citing mileage or the absence of trouble codes, and GM customer service directs owners to pay for diagnosis themselves.

Failure modes owners describe

Excessive oil consumption due to piston ring defect

The 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine (Toyota-manufactured) exhibits excessive oil burn—typically 1 quart per 1,000 miles, worsening to 1 quart per 500 miles at higher mileage. Owners report this is a known defect Toyota acknowledged in its own vehicles (Matrix, Camry, Corolla) and issued warranty enhancement ZE7 for piston and ring replacement. GM has not offered equivalent support for Pontiac Vibe owners despite using the same Toyota-supplied engine.

When: Typically emerges around 80,000 miles; worsens progressively with age and mileage

Symptoms owners cite: Rapid oil loss between oil changes; Increased engine noise and knocking if oil not monitored; No dashboard warning for low oil levels; Engine seizure if oil consumption not caught

Repairs/costs cited: Toyota ZE7 program covers piston and ring replacement; estimated repair cost >$4,000 if performed outside warranty. GM initially offered 2/3 of repair cost in one case, later withdrew support.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Toyota issued Warranty Enhancement ZE7 for its own vehicles; GM declined to offer comparable program, citing no open service issues. GM offered limited customer loyalty credit ($2,500 toward purchase) in at least one case but refused full responsibility.

Engine stalling at variable speeds

Engine stalls intermittently during freeway cruising, deceleration, acceleration, or city driving. Stalls occur at highway speeds (60 mph) and slower speeds (30 mph). Car typically restarts after key-off and restart in Neutral or Park. One complaint reports six stall occurrences over one year; another reports increasingly frequent stalls. No diagnostic trouble codes appear, making dealer diagnosis difficult.

When: Can occur from 70,000 miles onward; some complaints report ongoing issue since purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Intermittent engine stall without warning; Engine stalls at cruising speed, deceleration, or acceleration; Engine races or chokes occasionally; Requires key-off restart to recover; No trouble codes stored

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer inspections without stored codes yield no parts replacement. One ECM replacement performed under warranty in 2014 for similar issue. Dealers suggest battery terminal cleaning or request owner-paid diagnostics.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: One owner reports Toyota issued ECM recall for 2005–2008 Matrix/Vibe models (NHTSA Campaign 10V387000); similar recall for 2009+ models may be warranted. GM customer service deferred responsibility, citing mileage and requesting owner pay for diagnosis.

Unintended engine race (high idle) in Drive at stop

Engine races to 7,000 RPM when vehicle is in Drive and stopped or nearly stopped, causing sudden unintended forward movement into intersections. Problem occurs at random intervals. After engine restart, issue temporarily resolved until it recurs.

When: Began within first months of ownership (early 2010 model year)

Symptoms owners cite: Engine RPM races to 7,000 without driver input; Sudden unintended forward acceleration from stop; Random occurrence; resolves temporarily after restart; Caused near-collision when vehicle moved into intersection

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer performed accelerator modification and removed driver floor mat after two weeks of work; issue recurred three days later (2/22/2010).

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: First two dealer visits found no trouble and declared vehicle met specs. Third visit resulted in accelerator modification and floor mat removal with no lasting effect.

Check Engine and Traction Control warning lights with PCM and oxygen sensor faults

Check Engine and Traction System Control warning lights illuminate intermittently. Root cause traced to a faulty oxygen sensor that fails to set a warning code; this defective sensor causes PCM to short and require replacement. Problem recurred after initial PCM replacement within 2 days.

When: Occurred early in ownership (vehicle purchased 2 months before complaint)

Symptoms owners cite: Check Engine light on and off intermittently; Traction System Control warning light on and off; PCM failure/short circuit; Fear of loss of vehicle control due to computer failure

Repairs/costs cited: PCM replaced once, then replaced again after oxygen sensor identified as root cause. Dealer sourced information on similar GM claims to diagnose oxygen sensor fault.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No explicit manufacturer response documented; dealer performed repairs under apparent warranty coverage.

Exhaust and fuel odor in cabin

Owners report gas and exhaust smells entering the passenger compartment. One complaint notes the smell appeared suddenly after two weeks of normal operation; another reports ongoing exhaust smell. Dealers inspected exhaust and fuel systems and found nothing wrong, dismissing the odor as a 'chemical smell' and noting the computer system shows no alert.

When: Sudden onset after normal operation; ongoing in at least one case

Symptoms owners cite: Strong gas or exhaust odor in cabin during driving; Nausea and lightheadedness after prolonged exposure (one owner); Odor present during starting and stopping; No diagnostic trouble codes or system alerts

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer inspected entire exhaust and fuel system; found nothing wrong and attributed smell to unidentified 'chemical.'

Common questions

How serious is the engine problem on the 2009 Pontiac Vibe?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 29 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $3,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the engine typically fail?

Across the 23 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most engine failures cluster between 42,013 and 109,000 miles, with the median around 80,808. A quarter of owners report trouble before 42,013; a quarter make it past 109,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $3,100 for engine repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to engine?

No active recalls currently cover engine issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
