Possible events leading up to the failure is once in a while when the car is off and parked the engine fan will come on running very high and the car smells. This occurred about 4 times in 4 months. Then in the 5th month of ownership, while driving 50 MPH, I heard a beep, looked down at my dash and before I could finish reading the message the car died. The dash indicated something about get to a workshop, then the message disappeared and the coil light came on. I put my foot on the gas pedal and nothing happened. Thankgoodness no one was behind me or we would have been hit, I pushed the car to the shoulder of the road and called a tow truck. I was 80 miles from home and just minutes from getting on the main freeway. I was towed to the nearest vw dealer. It was a weekend so the servic

While traveling on interstate the vehicle lost acceleration and lost power while on exit ramp. Vehicle was towed to nearest vw dealer. Informed by dealer that the high pressure fuel pump had disintegrated and sent metal throughout fuel system and that parts and labor for repair would be $6000-$8000. Call to vw for assistance was rewarded with their offering to pay for the needed repairs. There was a long recorded history of dealer servicing and proof of only diesel fuel purchases. NHTSA should insure that all tdi owners be notified of this probability and given the opportunity to have repairs/replacements done by vw. *tr

While driving on interstate 5 in central oregon, going approx. 60 MPH, 2009 diesel jetta lost power and began to stall out. I had driven almost 245 miles on this day (with the same tank of fuel), before the stall occurred. Many warning lights came on the dash, including a flashing glow plug light with engine symbol, engine default light and workshop warning light. Upon coming to a stop, the car died completely, would no longer start, and had to be towed to vw. Upon receipt of the car, vw tried to accuse me of using "bad fuel" but then changed their story, once they did more research (and they found that many people across the us are having this problem). Volkswagen states that there is a complete fuel pump system failure, with metal particulate in the fuel filters and system, and all c

Vw Volkswagen jetta sportwagen tdi 2009. Was driving about 35 MPH when engine loses most of its power. A glow plug indicator light turned on and I saw an engine fault/workshop error. I quickly turned onto a side street and stopped the engine. After a couple minutes I restarted the car but it still had low power. After about 10 seconds it stalled and could not be restarted. Had it towed to a vw dealership and 5 days later they ran diagnostics and said it was a failed fuel pump and that metal shards were throughout the fuel system and everything needed to be replaced. *tr

Glow plug light and engine fault workshop light came on as I was pulling into work in a.m. Parked and restarted vehicle, with no further warning lights. I made appointment for scheduled maintenance with dealer. When I left for home that evening the vehicle started ok with no warning lights. While driving down the interstate freeway at 70 MPH the same warnings suddenly came back on and vehicle suffered immediate decrease in power with speed down to about 50 MPH. I exited the interstate and tried to make it to the vw dealership, but engine shut down when I stopped at stop sign and would not restart. Vehicle was pushed to the roadside by state police and had to be towed. Vw mechanic found that the high pressure fuel pump had failed with excessive metal shavings found throughout the fuel

Car would not start. Luckily parked in garage. Towed to dealer. Determined to be hpfp failure and DPF failure. Hpfp and DPF replaced along with associated small parts. But did not replace entire fuel system. A fuel sample taken from the fuel return hose when the car died looks like fine metallic particles. Settled to the bottom of the jar after several days. A magnet did not attract the particles so must have been aluminum - most likely from the piston bore of the hpfp. Vw paid for the repair. The day I got the car back I took a fuel sample from the fuel tank. Once again metal particles (along with other debris normally found in a fuel tank) were found. Now we are fearful of driving the car due to metal particles in the fuel system will destroy the new hpfp. Please make vw do a reca

Driving down freeway at 61mph, engine turns off. No power steering or brakes while I changed lanes in heavy traffic to get to the shoulder of the road. Car would not start and had to tow to the dealership. Dealer replaced battery, primed fuel system, gave car back. After five days, check engine light came on, so I took car to dealership. They replaced glow plug control module and gave car back. Driving down highway when car again dies, engine turns off without warning. I have to change lanes again with no power steering or brakes to get off the road. Towed vehicle to dealership where they say the high pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced. This is a very scary and dangerous problem to have a car turn itself off while driving down the freeway. *tr

2009 jetta tdi has an issue with sudden loss of engine power. Usually 100% reproducible in warm climate usually happens within the first few minutes of starting engine while traveling at 30mph at 2k rpms while holding a steady speed. Car will suddenly jerk and lose power one time then the remaining time will be without issue. On at least two occasions while pulling out into traffic the car has intermittently lost all power for a few seconds almost resulting in certain personal injury accidents. This was due to the fact that after starting the car I took a phone call before entering traffic. I feel that this is a temperature/time related problem as the time I was on the phone would about equal the time that when I normally would have left the lot the car would have had the hiccup/st

Was driving on residential street, approximately 25-30 MPH, and car just lost power and stalled. After a few minutes it could start again - but the vehicle would not move, even if gas was pushed down. After a week at the dealership - they said it was the throttle. My car would not start before (after only having the car for approximately 7 months and approximately 2000 miles) - and after having it towed to the dealer, they just said the fuel was gelling. But they did do a computer upgrade and said there "particles in the fuel line" that they cleaned out and said I may have gotten "bad fuel". 1 week after my 40000 mile routine maintenance check - my glow plug light went on and I had to have a sensor replaced.

I am "guessing at some of the information above since it was the first time it happened and I didn't give it much thought then. At that time, I was making a right-hand turn to another street and the engine stalled. There was no warning light or signal. I pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the engine and it worked fine. This occurred sometime in mid to late september. Yesterday (12/24/2014) I was at a stoplight and this happened again -- the engine stalled while I was already stopped while waiting for the light to change from red to green. Again, there was no warning light or signal. It was remniscent of when I drove a standard transmission vehicle and inappropriately took my foot off the clutch. I was able to re-start and engine ran fine. I am leery of driving the car again,

My vw jetta had sat for a few days in a indoor parking space in the midwest during winter december to be exact. When I started the car, it started weak, then gave an error on the display of "engine fault workshop.". The cat continued to drive, but lacked power and seemed to surge. After I returned home, I disconnected the lower intercooler hose to find a large ice formation and water restricting the outlet of the intercooler. This problem can cause major engine damage and is caused.by the exhaust gases and water vapor freezing in the intercooler. Every vw with this style intercooler setup has potential for this problem. It should be recalled do to its severity. Also, there is a tsb already written for the "fix". But vw has not informed anyone, nor will take care of the problem for a

2009 Volkswagen jetta 30,898 miles rear brakes rotors worn and pads gone. Front brakes still have 40,000 miles left on pads, look new according to certified ASE brake mechanic. Car does not stop safely. Mechanic was shocked at the brake wear on rear rotors and pads and the extreme wear on the back pads and rotors. Certified ASE mechanic advised that front wheel drive cars brakes should wear evenly, not entirely on back brakes. Vehicle not breaking right at low or high speeds. Car still under manufacturer warranty, dealer refuses to replace. *tr

This vehicle was purchased 11/2016 from a dealer/mechanic. He bought it at auction, reconstructed it and got the approvals to return it to full operation from the Massachusetts DOT. The title showed 'reconstructed' and 'prior collision'. Volkswagen notified us of Safety Recal 45F2 in 2017 - ABS control module - and we had the recall performed at Colonial VW in Westborough Mass in 2017. There is an extended warranty VWP-17-03 on vehicles repaired by Safety Recall 45F2. The car's ABS light illuminated and the dealership ran a diagnostic which ran code 16352 - control module faulty static. VW is telling the dealership that they will not honor the warranty because the car is a total loss. It is NOT a total loss, it has not been in an accident since it was reconstructed before we purchas

As I was coming to an immediate stop, due to a deer jumping out in front of me, the car/ brake pedal shuddered and I had to perform an emergency braking procedure by swerving onto the shoulder of the road. Thankfully no one was injured, including the deer, however, my nerves were frayed, as had this been in the snow or any other adverse conditions, what would have been the outcome then? Immediately after this happened the ABS light and flashing brake light appeared on the dash. I have used a scan tool to diagnose the issue to which the code #01130 (ABS Operation Implausible Signal). Through research online- forums it has come to my attention that this is a very common VW issue to the point that the NHTSA has requested/ mandated that a recall should be issued- www.automotive-fleet.com (

The car goes into neutral while driving it & will not return to gear. My car ending up stopping in the middle of the interstate! I was almost in a crash. The dealer repair said it was a mechatronic issue. The recall includes my year & model but somehow not my car? The dealer & vw corp told me my VIN specifically was not part of the transmission mechatronic recall but that's exactly what is happening. The VIN's need to be re-evaluated because the problem still exists. The car just comes out of gear & stops -- no warning!! Now I'm stuck with a car that I am afraid to drive & cannot afford $4k repair (the dealer also stated it's a "dealer only" type of repair).

2009 vw jetta tdi (turbo-diesel) equipped with dsg (direct shift gearbox) transmission. Vehicle prematurely downshifts from 2nd into 1st gear at slow speeds. When driving in 'tiptronic' (manual) shift mode at slow speed conditions, such as right turns, parking lots/garages, yield conditions, etc., the vehicle will downshift unexpectedly from 2nd gear into 1st after reacceleration has already begun, resulting in the engine's rpms to "skyrocket". If this occurs within a turn in traffic, the vehicle's acceleration is stalled due to the lower gear. Panicking, one shifts the vehicle into 2nd at the high rpms and the transmission jolts under the power and causes the vehicle to surge forward rapidly under power. This has contributed to near rear-end crash situations for both drivers following

When it rains the drains in the Volkswagen jetta get clogged up. Once the drains get clogged the water comes inside the interior of the car into the entire floor of the car. The floor is then flooded with water. Their has been a previous lawsuit that was settled for the previous vw models 97-05 in 2014. When the car was sold to me no one notified me of this problem and how to prevent this problem. Now my local vw dealership wants to charge me 1000 for this problem which should not be a problem from the first place. *tr

While driving on a city street, my car began to make a rumbling sound, followed by a engine warning message turning on. Within a minute, my car died and would not restart. We towed our 2009 vw jetta sportwagen tdi to a vw specialized mechanic who confirmed that there were metal shavings in the fuel system that seems to be resulting from a hpfp failure. Mileage was at 131769 at time of failure. (outside of the extended warranty time period for the hpfp issue) 12/21/2012 two faulty rear passenger seat belts were replaced. Airbags had not been deployed and car had not been in an accident prior to seat belts breaking.
