Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering steering on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin V481502 2041096 Jul 2015

Technical Bulletin (Electro-mechanical Steering Noise): In connection with the toothed belt the motor of the APA steering makes noise during operation. In some situations the noise can be heard in the passenger compartment. This document contains information on how to diagnose, and service this issue.

Some Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Passat vehicles equipped with electromechanical power steering have the G85 steering angle sensor located in the steering rack. These vehicles do not have a G85 in the steering column. To determine G85 location, check the J500 Power steering control module part number in the GFF printout. Do not use the part number on the steering rack for this check.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of the 2009 Tiguan report a dangerous intermittent power steering failure that strikes without warning. The system loses assist either partially or completely; the steering wheel shakes violently or locks solid, and a red warning light comes on the dash. One owner had full failure mid-highway drive and limped the car 300+ miles without power steering. Another lost steering control while turning in light snow at 5–15 mph and slid into a curb, breaking the axle and control arm.

The failures happen unpredictably—sometimes on the first start of the day, sometimes after a brief stop, sometimes during cold weather. One owner experienced it roughly 1 in 5 times he started the vehicle. Dealers have diagnosed faulty steering harnesses and recommended full steering rack replacement, quoted at roughly $1,900. At least one owner reported VW denied warranty coverage despite filing a claim. Some owners say they found dozens of other Tiguan owners online reporting identical symptoms, suggesting a broader design or manufacturing issue rather than isolated defects.

Failure modes owners describe

Electronic Power Steering Loss / Assist Failure

The power steering system loses assist, either partially or completely, with a red power steering assist warning light appearing on the dashboard. The steering wheel may shake rapidly or become locked solid, making the car extremely difficult or impossible to steer. This occurs without warning and can happen while driving or after restart.

When: Occurs intermittently and unpredictably; some owners report it happens 1 out of 5 starts, others report it after cold weather or on subsequent starts. Incidents documented at various mileages including 10,000 miles.

Symptoms owners cite: Red power steering assist failure warning light; Steering wheel shaking rapidly back and forth; Steering wheel locks solid; Steering becomes very hard to turn; Complete loss of steering assist for brief periods; Intermittent power steering failure on restart

Codes mentioned: Problem stored in steering rack

Repairs/costs cited: Whole steering rack replacement quoted at approximately $1,900. Wiring harness replacement mentioned in at least two cases where dealers performed the repair.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: VW denied warranty coverage in at least one documented case despite problem being design-related.

Steering Harness Malfunction

Failure of the electronic steering harness causes steering to become extremely difficult and unresponsive. The harness is an electronic control component (not a traditional hydraulic power steering system).

When: Noted as developing after noticing steering differences over the course of a week; one documented repair completed 6/7/10.

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel becomes very hard to turn; Steering wheel icon appears on dashboard; Steering unresponsive and difficult to control; Vehicle deemed unsafe to drive by dealer

Codes mentioned: Steering harness fault

Repairs/costs cited: Steering harness replacement performed at dealership; part took extended time to arrive.

Cold-Weather / Adverse-Condition Power Steering Failure

Power steering fails specifically during or following cold weather exposure or snow driving, with complete loss of steering control reported. Occurs without warning while actively turning or driving at low speeds.

When: Incidents documented in October 2010 and subsequent cold-weather periods. One owner reports recurring issues after cold weather even while driving.

Symptoms owners cite: Complete loss of steering and braking in snow/cold conditions; Vehicle slides uncontrollably into curb; Loud grinding noise during all steering functions; Power steering failure with no warning; Loss of steering control while turning at low speeds (5-15 mph)

Repairs/costs cited: Damage documented: broken axle, control arm, steering knuckle from impact into curb.

Steering System Grinding Noise

Loud grinding noise develops during steering operation, occurring after repeated power steering failures in adverse weather. Indicates mechanical wear or damage within the steering system.

When: Develops after multiple failure episodes during cold/adverse weather driving.

Symptoms owners cite: Constant and loud grinding noise during all steering functions; Noise accompanies power steering operation

Common questions

How serious is the steering problem on the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan?

It's a meaningful issue. 14 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $700.

At what mileage does the steering typically fail?

Across the 12 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most steering failures cluster between 40,000 and 110,000 miles, with the median around 53,640. A quarter of owners report trouble before 40,000; a quarter make it past 110,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $700 for steering repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to steering?

No active recalls currently cover steering issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
