Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering engine on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin 00-06-01-026R Jun 2025

This service bulletin provides information on replacing the intake manifold when the engine is replaced after severe internal engine damage.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of this 2011 Aveo describe a vehicle prone to sudden stalling and power loss at various driving speeds—sometimes mid-highway, sometimes at traffic lights. The engine shuts down without warning; the driver restarts it and driving resumes normally for a while. Dealerships and independent mechanics have been unable to pinpoint the cause in most cases, with one dealer's computer reprogramming attempt failing to resolve the issue.

Overheating is the second major complaint. Coolant reservoirs empty rapidly and inexplicably; hoses burst, radiators develop holes, and thermostats fail—sometimes repeatedly. One owner replaced the thermostat three times, and each time the check engine light returned. Head gaskets blow in conjunction with overheating events. A few owners report the radiator cap was loose or damaged, but retightening it did not stop the failures.

Hesitation and sluggish acceleration occur during normal driving, with the pedal pressed to the floor producing minimal speedup. Some owners also report fuel injector problems causing poor take-off and excessive fuel consumption. Electrical gremlins—excessive headlight failures and erratic dashboard lights—compound the frustration. No shop has successfully diagnosed the stalling issue, and cooling-system repairs often do not stick.

Failure modes owners describe

Stalling and loss of power during driving

Engine stalls or loses power unexpectedly while driving at various speeds (25–55 mph). In some cases, the car stalls when accelerating from a stop or at traffic lights. The vehicle may restart after turning off and restarting, or require multiple restart attempts. Owners report the stall is sudden and occurs without warning.

When: Occurs intermittently; reported from 18,000 miles through 54,000 miles. Some owners report sporadic failures over months or years.

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stalls without warning while driving; Loss of power when accelerating; Engine dies at traffic lights or when applying gas; Requires restart to resume driving; RPM fluctuation and rough idle

Repairs/costs cited: One dealer reprogrammed the engine computer but the issue recurred. Multiple shops have failed to diagnose the root cause.

Overheating and coolant loss

Engine overheats due to rapid coolant loss from multiple sources. Owners report sudden emptying of the coolant reservoir, sometimes while driving on highways. The reservoir has cracked in at least one case. Hoses have burst. The radiator has developed holes that burst/exploded under load.

When: Reported from 19,500 miles to 79,000 miles. One incident occurred after driving 10 minutes following coolant refill.

Symptoms owners cite: Coolant reservoir empties suddenly; Engine overheats while driving; Coolant hoses burst or rupture; Radiator develops holes or explodes; Overheating warning light may not illuminate even when vehicle is hot

Repairs/costs cited: Hoses replaced; thermostat replaced (one owner needed replacement three times, failure recurred each time); radiator cap replaced; radiator repaired independently. Low cooling fluid cited by dealer but no permanent fix documented.

Head gasket failure

Head gaskets blow, typically in conjunction with overheating events. One owner reports the camshaft was damaged alongside blown head gaskets; timing belt was also replaced. Another reports oil leaking onto head gaskets, causing the engine to shut off.

When: Reported from 33,861 miles to 74,756 miles.

Symptoms owners cite: Head gasket fails/blows; Oil leak onto head gaskets; Engine shutdown; Overheating precedes failure in some cases

Repairs/costs cited: Head gaskets replaced, timing belt replaced, camshaft replaced—but failure recurred in at least one case. One owner's sales rep arranged repair after leaking oil on head gaskets was diagnosed.

Hesitation and sluggish acceleration

Engine hesitates to accelerate or responds sluggishly to throttle input. Owner presses the pedal to the floor but the speedometer barely creeps up. The car sometimes 'snaps out' of the condition after a few minutes of driving.

When: Reported 15–20 minutes into driving; onset at 45,000 miles in one case.

Symptoms owners cite: Engine hesitates to accelerate; Sluggish throttle response; Minimal acceleration despite full throttle input; Condition sometimes self-resolves mid-drive

Repairs/costs cited: No repair found effective; one dealer inspected but found nothing wrong.

Thermostat failure (recurring)

Thermostat fails repeatedly. One owner had it replaced three times; each time the failure recurred and the check engine light came back on.

When: Reported at approximately 65,000 miles; failures recurring over time.

Symptoms owners cite: Check engine light illuminates; Engine overheating; Thermostat failure detected by dealer

Repairs/costs cited: Thermostat replaced multiple times (three replacements in one case) without resolving the recurring issue.

Fuel injector problems

Fuel injectors malfunction, causing poor throttle response and excessive fuel consumption. Owner reports improper take-off and high gas drainage.

When: Timing not specified; reported as a separate issue after head gasket oil leak repair.

Symptoms owners cite: Improper take-off/acceleration; Excessive fuel consumption; Poor throttle response

Repairs/costs cited: Issue identified but specific repair details not provided.

Electrical issues (headlights and dashboard lights)

Excessive headlight failures (5+ replacements by 2012) and erratic dashboard indicator lights. Seat belt warning light and gear shift indicator lights flicker on and off. These issues could not be diagnosed under warranty at the dealership.

When: Reported since 2012; no mileage specified.

Symptoms owners cite: Headlights fail repeatedly; Seat belt warning light cycles on and off; Gear shift indicator lights flicker; Dashboard lights malfunction

Repairs/costs cited: No repair documented; dealership could not find the cause under warranty.

My coolant reservoir has been emptied suddenly on 4 occasions. One one occasion, while driving on the highways, my car overheated, and was found to have no coolant. After filling it, letting the car cool, and driving 10 minutes down the road, it had overheated and was empty again. That time, and once before, it was the hose. Another time, the cap was damaged, and was allowing coolant to…

The car has lost power while driving on 3 occasions so far over the past 3 years. Each time this happened, I have been driving between 25-45 MPH in a residential/suburban area. I have had to roll to a stop and pull over on a busy road. My gas nor breaks worked at all while this was happening. I turned my car off, then on, and it worked like normal again.

Common questions

How serious is the engine problem on the 2011 Chevrolet Aveo?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 17 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $3,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the engine typically fail?

Across the 11 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most engine failures cluster between 33,861 and 68,000 miles, with the median around 45,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 33,861; a quarter make it past 68,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $3,100 for engine repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to engine?

No active recalls currently cover engine issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
