What stands out

Airbags accounts for 36% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 12 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 126 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2011 GMC Sierra faces a critical unresolved safety issue: a May 2016 Takata passenger airbag recall (NHTSA 16V381) that remains incomplete because replacement parts were unavailable as of the narrative dates. The defect involves propellant degradation in Takata inflators exposed to heat and humidity, with potential for rupture and serious injury during deployment. Owners in high-humidity climates (notably South Carolina) report calling dealers and GM repeatedly over years with no path to repair; GM's petition to avoid the recall exceeded its August 2017 decision deadline without resolution, and Takata's bankruptcy complicated sourcing.

Beyond the recall, owners report dashboard cracking around the airbag area—a known defect that GM acknowledged on a case-by-case basis—creating projectile hazards if the bag deploys. Dealers quote $800–$1,000+ for replacement and deny warranty coverage.

One documented incident involved unintended airbag deployment at 35 mph on clear roads with no collision, causing seatbelt lockup and engine shutdown; the dealer blamed damaged shocks and refused repair. Other complaints include persistent service airbag warning lights that dealers cannot diagnose, and one case of a driver-side airbag failing to deploy during a tractor-trailer collision, causing occupant injuries. The pattern suggests systemic diagnostic and deployment issues compounded by an unfinished recall.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata passenger airbag inflator propellant degradation

Takata-supplied front passenger airbag inflators subject to propellant degradation over time, particularly in hot and humid climates, potentially causing inflator rupture during deployment and serious or fatal injuries.

When: Recall issued May 2016 (NHTSA 16V381, GM Recall 2049151); affects 2007-2011 models

Symptoms owners cite: Recall notification received but no repair path; No parts available for remedy over years; Propellant degradation risk in high-humidity environments

Codes mentioned: NHTSA 16V381000, GM Recall 2049151, NHTSA Campaign 21V050000, NHTSA Campaign 21V054000

Repairs/costs cited: Repair parts unavailable as of narrative dates; GM submitted petition for inconsequentiality with August 2017 decision deadline; owners report no updates on availability after multiple dealer and manufacturer contacts

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM Recall 2049151 (May 2016); GM petition for inconsequentiality filed; Takata Holdings filed bankruptcy (noted in 2016); recall status remains incomplete with remedy unavailable; GM states vehicle is safe to drive

Dashboard cracking around airbag area

Dashboard develops cracks, often near or directly over the passenger-side airbag, potentially creating projectile hazards if airbag deploys; cracks attributed to material degradation from sun exposure and vibration.

When: Multiple occurrences reported from 2011-2018 narrative dates; cracking appears over time with normal driving; one instance after hitting pothole at low speed

Symptoms owners cite: Visible cracks in dashboard material; Cracks originating from top corners or near gauge clusters; Loose plastic debris inside dash console; Multiple cracks in same vehicle; Recurring issue in same location after first replacement

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers quote $800–$1,000+ for dashboard replacement; some owners report GM offered case-by-case reduced-cost replacement; one owner's replaced dash cracked again in same spot after minor pothole impact; dealers classify as aesthetic/warranty-excluded in some cases

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM acknowledged problem exists (per owners); offered reduced-cost case-by-case replacement in some instances; dealers deny warranty coverage claiming aesthetic issue; no formal recall issued

Unintended airbag deployment while driving

Front ceiling/roof airbags deployed without collision or impact at normal highway speeds; caused seatbelts to lock and truck to shut down, creating road hazard.

When: November 29, 2018, at 35 mph on Route 460 West near Grundy, Virginia; clear roads and weather

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags deployed spontaneously during normal driving; Seatbelts locked up immediately; Vehicle shut down abruptly; Loud noise from deployment audible to nearby business; No collision or impact involved

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer (Ramey Chevrolet Richlands VA) examined vehicle at 58,000 miles; dealer refused repair claiming shocks were damaged, denying connection to airbag deployment

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer refused warranty repair; attributed to damaged shocks

Airbag warning light illuminated; failed or incomplete repair

Service airbag warning light remains on after front passenger airbag replacement; dealer suggests possible driver-side airbag failure but no corresponding recall available; vehicle not repaired.

When: Approximately 72,000 miles on 2011 Sierra 1500

Symptoms owners cite: Service airbag warning light illuminated on instrument panel; Light persists after front passenger airbag replacement; Dealer diagnosis suggests front driver-side airbag issue

Codes mentioned: Service airbag warning light

Repairs/costs cited: Front passenger airbag replaced under recall (21V054000); warning light remained on; no driver-side airbag recall available; vehicle not diagnosed or repaired further

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 21V054000 applied; no corrective action for continued warning light

Driver-side airbag failed to deploy during collision

Driver-side airbag did not deploy following direct impact from tractor-trailer collision; occupants sustained multiple injuries requiring surgery.

When: 44,000 miles; specific date not provided

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag did not deploy during crash; Service airbag warning light illuminated after incident; Driver and passenger sustained injuries to knee, neck, back, shoulder

Codes mentioned: Service airbag warning light

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle taken to dealer; unable to diagnose failure; not repaired

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer made aware; no documented remedy

Airbag warning light with no actionable diagnosis

Service airbag warning light illuminates intermittently or continuously; dealers unable or unwilling to diagnose root cause; warranty expiration blocks repair.

When: Timing varies; one report indicates light went on and off repeatedly over time

Symptoms owners cite: Service airbag warning light continually illuminates; Light goes on and off intermittently; No clear failure mode identified

Codes mentioned: Service airbag warning light

Repairs/costs cited: First dealer visit: diagnosis unclear, no cost quoted; second visit: quoted $800 repair but warranty had expired; owner declined out-of-warranty repair; light continues to cycle on/off

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No warranty support after expiration

Takata recall. My GMC pickup received a recall on the takata airbag in 2016. As of today, GMC says they don't have a fix for it and don't know when they will. This is not a satisfactory answer. If problems arise from these airbags, I will be contacting a lawyer and GMC will have a lawsuit. I believe the airbags should be replaced. This is a big safety issue!

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2011 GMC Sierra?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 126 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $1,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 44 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 45,000 and 79,000 miles, with the median around 58,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 45,000; a quarter make it past 79,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
