What stands out

Owners have filed 27 powertrain complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 5 model years of Mercury Milan in our records for powertrain problems, this one ranks #2 by owner-complaint volume.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering powertrain on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin SSM 47976 May 2019

On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission it is imperative that the converter pilot hub be greased with Motorcraft Multi-Purpose Grease Spray XL-5-A even if grease was not applied from the factory. Also verify that the engine/transmission alignment dowel pins are present as well as the engine crankshaft dowel pin, if equipped, when installing the transmission. Failure to adequately lubricate the converter hub greatly increases the likelihood of the flexplate cracking in the future. Missing dowels may cause a misalignment issue also resulting in a premature failure. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2011 Mercury Milan powertrain complaints center on a throttle body failure pattern affecting vehicles with 36,500 to 59,000 miles. Owners describe sudden, complete loss of acceleration and engine power while driving at any speed—starting from a stop, highway cruising at 65–75 mph, or routine city driving. The wrench light (and often check engine light) illuminates, and the vehicle either enters limp mode capped at 5–10 mph or shuts down entirely. Restarting temporarily restores normal operation, but the failure recurs within minutes to days. One owner experienced five separate incidents before repair; another had it happen three times within 2.5 weeks.

After restart, several owners report RPM spikes to 3,500–5,500 and jerking that persists for miles. Owners consistently report dealership diagnosis of a bad throttle body requiring replacement at $400–$708 per incident. One owner had the throttle body replaced twice (January and August 2017) under Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03, yet the failure recurred within one hour of the second replacement. Nearly all repairs fell outside powertrain warranty coverage, despite owners' claims that Ford was aware of the defect.

A secondary transmission issue involves hard shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, with RPMs spiking before an abrupt upshift that causes wheel spin on wet or snowy roads. One owner also reported spontaneous window drops while parked in rain, allowing interior water intrusion.

Failure modes owners describe

Throttle Body Failure / Loss of Power

Throttle body malfunction causes sudden loss of engine power and acceleration, often triggering wrench and check engine lights. Vehicle enters limp mode, limiting speed to 5–10 mph or stalling completely. Issue resolves temporarily after restart but recurs. Multiple owners report throttle body replacement ($400–$708), and Ford issued Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03 for at least one owner; however, most repairs fell outside powertrain warranty coverage.

When: Occurs at any speed (parking, 40–70 mph highway) and any driving condition; mileage range 36,500–59,000 miles reported

Symptoms owners cite: Sudden loss of acceleration/power despite pressing gas pedal; Wrench light and/or check engine light illumination; Hard jolt or shudder before power loss; Rough idle or violent shaking while parked; Vehicle limited to 5–10 mph in limp mode; RPMs spike to 3,500–5,500 after restart; Hesitation on acceleration; Intermittent surges of forward movement without foot on throttle

Codes mentioned: P2111, Throttle Actuator Control System

Repairs/costs cited: Throttle body replacement; costs reported: $400, $438, $460, $430, $707.97. One owner had two replacements (Jan 2017 and Aug 2017) under Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03 at dealer; second replacement failed within 1 hour. Another owner reported third-party replacement of throttle body gasket ($400 at dealership post-diagnosis).

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03 (throttle body replacement); most repairs not covered under powertrain warranty. Owners allege Ford knew of defect but did not issue recall.

Hard Transmission Shift / Erratic Shifting

During 2nd-to-3rd gear upshift in drive mode, engine RPMs spike to approximately 3,500 before abrupt shift, causing wheel spin and loss of control on wet/snowy roads. Issue present at normal and below-normal operating temperatures and reproducible at any time.

When: Noted from day of purchase; recurring throughout vehicle ownership

Symptoms owners cite: RPM surge to ~3,500 during 2nd-to-3rd upshift; Abrupt hard shift into 3rd gear; Wheel spin on wet and snow-covered roads; Loss of control / skidding while turning

Window Auto-Drop

Front windows roll down automatically while vehicle is locked and parked, despite being raised before locking. Occurs in wet weather, allowing water intrusion into interior.

When: While parked and locked in rain

Symptoms owners cite: Both front windows roll down without user input; Wet interior upon return to vehicle

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2011 Mercury Milan?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 27 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $2,500 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 23 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 39,000 and 51,184 miles, with the median around 45,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 39,000; a quarter make it past 51,184. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
