What stands out

Airbags accounts for 21% of all owner complaints filed against this vehicle, across 3 categories tracked.

No new NHTSA airbags complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 7 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The passenger-side airbag on affected 2013 Mini Cooper Convertibles frequently disables itself due to a faulty occupancy sensor, leaving passengers unprotected in crashes. Replacement runs $1,000–$2,000, and while MINI issued a recall with a 10-year/120,000-mile warranty, many owners report never receiving notice and being denied coverage.

Owners consistently report that a faulty passenger seat occupancy sensor (OC3) triggers a warning light and disables the passenger airbag even when someone is sitting in the seat with the seatbelt fastened. The malfunction occurs across a wide mileage range—from 10,000 to 106,000 miles—and appears frequent enough that owners mention finding active discussions about it on Mini and BMW online forums.

The real-world consequence is stark: one owner was rear-ended at 45–50 mph with substantial front-end damage, yet the airbag never deployed. Multiple owners express fear their passengers will be unprotected in a crash.

NHTSA records show a recall for OC3 seat occupancy mat replacement with warranty extended to 10 years/120,000 miles. However, several owners report never receiving the recall notice. Those who learned of the issue at dealerships face replacement costs between $1,082 and $2,000, often with a $145 diagnostic fee tacked on first. Dealers have refused warranty coverage citing the vehicle age or mileage, even when the owner's vehicle sits at or near the recall threshold. BMW quoted $1,600 for the same repair on their models. Owners ask why a known safety defect isn't being covered proactively.

Failure modes owners describe

Passenger seat occupancy sensor fault (OC3)

The occupancy detection sensor in the passenger seat cushion malfunctions, causing the vehicle to register a false no-occupancy state even when a passenger is seated and belted. This triggers warning lights and disables the passenger airbag deployment logic, leaving a passenger unprotected in a collision.

When: Occurs between 10,000 and 106,000 miles; one owner reported issue after exactly 10 years of ownership; another experienced it at 92,323 miles; one at 35,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger airbag warning light illuminates when passenger sits in seat with seatbelt fastened; Seatbelt warning light illuminates simultaneously; Vehicle displays message that passenger airbag will not deploy; Airbag does not deploy in actual accident impact even with passenger present

Codes mentioned: OC3 SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR FAULT

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement of passenger seat occupancy sensor/mat: costs reported range from $1,082 to $2,000 plus tax; some dealers charged $145 diagnostic fee upfront before confirming replacement need; one owner cited $1,123 plus tax

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA recalls issued for OC3 seat occupancy mat replacement with limited warranty extension to 10 years/120,000 miles; some owners report never receiving recall notice despite recall existing; dealers have denied warranty coverage citing age/mileage expiration; BMW estimated $1,600 for same repair; manufacturer referred complainants to NHTSA Hotline rather than offering coverage

Airbag non-deployment in actual collision

In at least one documented accident, the passenger airbag failed to deploy despite impact severity warranting deployment. Owner reports being rear-ended at 45–50 mph with front-end structural damage but no airbag activation.

When: Occurred during accident on 10/15/2015 at approximately 45–50 mph impact speed

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag did not deploy during rear-end collision at highway speed; Vehicle sustained significant front-end damage

I took my car in for servicing for an oil change and because the passenger airbag warning was displayed. Technician said the passenger seat occupancy has a sensor fault. No guarantee the airbag would inflate in an accident. $1123 plus tax to replace. Is there a recall notice on this? If so I have not seen it. Can not afford to replace that, it is a serious safety concern. Can you help me with…

I was involved in a car accident on 10/15/2015 which I rear ended a pickup truck. I was going roughly 45-50 MPH when the truck in front slammed their brakes which caused me to crash into his rear end of the truck. The front of the car is in bad shape and luckily I was not injured. However, the airbags in the car did not deploy which I find very disturbing.

As per NHTSA there was a recall the replace OC3 SEAT OCCUPANCY MAT but I never received recall notice and just passed 10 years with 40K millage and started getting air bag light, dealer is not replacing it under warranty, if they was a recall they should have replaced my seat earlier so that I would not have this issue today. is there a way to extend warranty to longer time or recall all the cars…
