severe NHTSA 13V567000 November 13, 2013

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through November 5, 2013

The inability to turn on the windshield defroster may decrease the driver's visibility thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the electronic climate control module software, free of charge. The recall began during December 2013. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 13380.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2014 Malibu has widespread defroster and HVAC blower issues that leave windshields fogged and visibility compromised, sometimes intermittently and sometimes repeatedly—and many cars fall outside recalled VINs despite matching the recall's production dates. Some owners also report spontaneous sunroof explosions and dashboard reflections that block sight lines.

The most frequent complaint is defroster failure. Owners describe windshields fogging up during rain or humid conditions, with the defroster either not working at all or working inconsistently. Several were forced to pull over, manually wipe the windshield, or roll down windows in dangerous conditions to maintain visibility. Failure dates range from early ownership to over 100k miles.

HVAC blower problems follow closely. Owners report the blower stopping without warning, then restarting randomly after minutes to days. Some describe the system becoming completely uncontrollable—heat stuck on maximum with controls unresponsive. One owner's fuse was intact; a dealer reset the computer temporarily, but the issue returned.

Several owners reference NHTSA Campaign 13V567000 (Visibility) as existing since 2013, but state their VINs were excluded from the recall despite matching the production window. At least one owner was told their car fell within the recall's dates but remained ineligible. Chevrolet instructed some to pay out-of-pocket and request reimbursement if later recalled—reimbursement never came.

Two owners reported sunroof glass spontaneously exploding at highway speeds with no external impact, scattering shards throughout the cabin with no injuries. One dealer said "something must have caused" it, but found no evidence.

Minor complaints include dashboard and rear mirror reflections obscuring visibility.

Failure modes owners describe

Defroster/Defog System Failure

Windshield defroster fails to clear fogging or frost, leaving the windshield obscured during rain or humid conditions. Owners report being unable to see the road, requiring manual windshield wiping or window operation.

When: Throughout vehicle life; reported at 51k, 70k, 75k, 80k, 120k, and 121k miles

Symptoms owners cite: Windshield fogging up and not clearing when defroster activated; Inability to defog windshield in rain or humid conditions; Poor visibility through windshield despite defroster operation; Defrost control not engaging properly

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reported dealer reset computer in March; some owners reported dealerships unable to determine cause; one dealership provided diagnostic estimate but repair not completed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign 13V567000 (Visibility) exists but many vehicles claim VIN not included despite falling within production dates; manufacturer stated investigation would be opened in at least one case and offered reimbursement if placed under recall; some owners referred to NHTSA

HVAC Blower Fan Intermittent Loss

HVAC fan and blower stop functioning intermittently, leaving no air flow or defrost capability. Fan stops responding to control inputs, then restarts after minutes to hours without intervention. Prevents defroster from engaging.

When: Intermittent across vehicle life; reported at various mileages

Symptoms owners cite: HVAC fan and blower non-functional when started; Power indicator light not illuminated despite HVAC controls; No air blowing regardless of knob position; Blower stops working when any defrost/heat/AC settings changed; Fan resumes operation randomly after 10 minutes to hours or days; Unable to operate heat/air or other HVAC buttons

Repairs/costs cited: Fuse checked and not blown; dealership unable to determine cause; one owner reported computer reset in March resolved issue temporarily

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recalls for vehicles outside 13V567000 campaign despite falling within Nov 2013 production dates

HVAC Control Unresponsive

HVAC system becomes uncontrollable or unresponsive, with heat stuck on high and controls non-functional despite power. Owners unable to adjust temperature, fan speed, or vent direction.

When: Reported at time of startup and intermittently

Symptoms owners cite: Heat stuck on maximum level and unable to turn off; HVAC vents untouchable and unable to operate; All HVAC buttons non-responsive despite power; AC air directed directly to windshield uncontrollably on first drive

Repairs/costs cited: One owner noted vehicle referenced recall 13V567000 but dealer claimed issue was fixed before resale, yet problem persisted

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 13V567000 referenced; one dealership claimed repair completed pre-sale but owner continued experiencing problem

Sunroof Spontaneous Explosion

Sunroof glass spontaneously shatters and explodes while vehicle is in motion at highway speeds, with no impact or external cause. Glass fragments scatter throughout vehicle interior.

When: 65 mph highway driving and 65 mph highway with sunroof tilted; one at 71k miles

Symptoms owners cite: Sunroof exploded and shattered without warning; No external cause (no truck collision, overpass, rocks); Glass shards carpeted throughout vehicle interior; Occurred on sunny day at 68 degrees

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer stated failure was unusual and something must have caused explosion; vehicle not repaired in reports

Dashboard Reflection Obscuring Windshield

Top of dashboard reflects light onto windshield, blocking visibility when driving. Light reflection interferes with forward vision through windshield.

When: Reported at 1,500 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Vision obscured by dashboard reflection on windshield; Top of dashboard reflecting onto windshield while driving

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer made aware

Rear View Mirror Light Blocking Reverse Visibility

Rear view mirror light shines onto rear windshield and blocks visibility when driving in reverse. Light reflection impairs rear vision.

When: Reported at 400 miles (nearly new)

Symptoms owners cite: Light shining on rear windshield from rear view mirror blocking visibility in reverse

Common questions

How serious is the visibility problem on the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 18 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $350 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the visibility typically fail?
