What stands out

Of the 16 model years of Hyundai Elantra we track for body problems, this one carries the most owner complaints on file — 121.

Owners have filed 121 body complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering body on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin 23-BD-007H Apr 2023

Hyundai applies a Paint Protection Film (PPF) on new vehicles before delivery to dealerships. It provides a barrier between the paint and contaminants, such as rail dust, acid rain, and industrial fallout. In rare cases, the paint can become clouded under the PPF. These spots are the result of moisture trapped between the PPF and the paint.

The failure pattern owners describe

Paint peeling dominates the complaint volume. Owners consistently describe large chunks of paint lifting, bubbling, and delaminating from hoods, roofs, doors, and other panels—often within 1–4 years and 30,000–92,000 miles. White pearl finishes are hit hardest. Rain, car washing, and even windy conditions accelerate the peeling. Bare metal and primer are exposed, creating rust risk. Paint flakes have struck other vehicles' windshields on the highway. Hyundai's 30,000-mile paint warranty leaves most owners uncovered. The manufacturer issued Warranty Extension Z05 and Technical Service Bulletins for paint adhesion failures, but coverage varies by color and excludes many white vehicles. Owners report Hyundai dealership estimates are inflated compared to independent shops (sometimes double), and Hyundai will only pay 50% of repair costs at Hyundai body shops.

Door latches fail suddenly without warning. Rear doors become inoperable—locked or unlocked, they simply won't open from inside or outside. Some front doors also fail. Failures occur around 60,000–85,000 miles, though some vehicles are affected much sooner. Owners describe being trapped in or locked out of their cars. Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin for latch replacement on some 2017 models, but out-of-warranty vehicles are not covered. Latch replacement costs $500–$1,200 per door, with weeks-long parts delays at dealerships. Door handles also fracture or break from repeated pulling, and handles sometimes require 10–20+ pulls to open even when unlocked.

Failure modes owners describe

Paint peeling and delamination

Progressive paint peeling, chipping, and delamination on exterior panels, with emphasis on white pearl finishes. Paint bubbles, lifts, and flakes off in large chunks exposing bare metal and primer. Issue often develops within 1–4 years and progresses with exposure to water and weather.

When: Typically 1–4 years and 30,000–92,000 miles; some owners report onset within 12–18 months

Symptoms owners cite: Large chunks or strips of paint missing from hood, roof, doors, and other panels; Paint peeling accelerates during rain, car washing, and windy conditions; Bubbling and puckering of clear coat before full delamination; Bare metal and primer exposed; discoloration and early surface rust at affected sites; Paint flakes detach while driving and can strike other vehicles' windshields

Repairs/costs cited: Owners cite repainting costs ranging from $565 (partial out-of-pocket contribution) to full repaint estimates; Hyundai dealership estimates described as overpriced; independent shops quote 50% less than dealership estimates. One owner paid multiple times for repairs; paint continued peeling. Another used vinyl wrap as temporary fix.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai offers 30,000-mile paint warranty; owners exceeding this mileage receive no manufacturer coverage. Hyundai Warranty Extension Z05 and Technical Service Bulletins acknowledge paint adhesion failures on certain colors, but coverage excludes some affected paint colors (notably white pearl). Hyundai has declined assistance for out-of-warranty vehicles and required owners to cover 50% of repair costs at Hyundai body shops only.

Door latch and handle failure—non-opening doors

Rear and front door latches fail suddenly and without warning, leaving doors unable to open from inside or outside handles. Doors may be unlocked but unresponsive to manual opening attempts. Child safety locks contribute to entrapment risk. Multiple doors on the same vehicle often fail in sequence.

When: Typically 60,000–85,000 miles; failures occur suddenly with no prior degradation; some occur within 1–4 years of purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Door will not open from exterior handle; driver or passenger locked inside; Door will not open from interior handle; passengers trapped in vehicle; Door may unlock electronically but latch mechanism does not release; Repeated pulling or hitting door handle or door frame may temporarily work around failure; Multiple doors on same vehicle fail sequentially over weeks or months

Repairs/costs cited: Door latch replacement cost cited as $500 per door or $1,200 per latch assembly; dealership quoted several weeks for parts availability. One owner reported paying out-of-pocket after latch failure occurred post-recall issuance. Another owner waited nearly 6 months for dealer 'courtesy' repairs on out-of-warranty vehicle. Door handle plastic fracturing observed when forced open.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai issued Technical Service Bulletin for door latch replacement on 'some' 2017 Elantra models. Recall issued for front driver-side door latch on at least some model years; owner reports receiving recall notice but dealer initially denied coverage, then later issued recall repair. Hyundai warranty does not cover latch failures beyond original warranty period. Dealership refused to replace latches on remaining doors until failure occurred.

Door handle breakage and plastic fracturing

Exterior door handles break off or fracture when pulled, rendering the exterior handle inoperable and forcing passengers to open doors from inside. Handles may break during normal use or after repeated pulling attempts due to faulty latch.

When: Occurs after cumulative pulling on handles; one instance reported after 85,000 miles; breakage may follow years of difficult opening

Symptoms owners cite: Plastic surrounding key insertion area breaks and separates from handle assembly; Handle remains pulled away from car body and door cannot be opened from outside; Handle cracks or fractures during technician's attempt to open door; Multiple handles on same vehicle fail (all 4 door handles broken in one case)

Repairs/costs cited: Repair requires replacement of entire door handle assembly. One owner cited multiple replacements on same handle (driver-side front broken 3 times, passenger front twice, rear passenger twice). Dealership quoted 6-month wait for 'courtesy' repairs on out-of-warranty vehicle.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recall issued specifically for handle breakage. Out-of-warranty vehicles may receive 'courtesy' repairs after extended negotiation. Hyundai warranty does not cover handle fractures.

Door handle difficulty opening—requires multiple pulls

Exterior door handles require repeated pulling (2–20+ times) before door opens, even when door is unlocked. Clicking sound often accompanies difficulty. Issue may worsen over time or occur suddenly.

When: Can begin within first year and persist for years; one case reported as ongoing since 70,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Door requires 2–6 pulls on handle to open when unlocked; Some doors require 10–20+ pulls, especially after door has been locked; Clicking sound audible when opening doors; Problem is intermittent or consistently difficult; Occurs on front and rear doors, driver and passenger sides

Repairs/costs cited: Owners cite actuator replacement; repair cost estimated at $2,000 for both passenger-side doors. One owner paid for independent repair after dealer refused coverage.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai issued Technical Service Bulletin for door latch replacement. Extended warranty coverage available for some model years, but out-of-warranty vehicles are not covered.

Door spontaneous opening while driving

Passenger-side door opened approximately 10 inches while vehicle traveling at highway speed (75 mph), triggered by door latch mechanism failure. No audible warning or alarm preceded event. Interior light illuminated when door opened.

When: Single incident reported while driving on interstate

Symptoms owners cite: Door suddenly opens to ~10 inches while vehicle in motion; Interior light illuminates without triggering alarm or warning bell; No prior noise or indication before failure; Passenger was seated normally with arms crossed, not touching door

Inspection cover detachment and improper installation

Front bumper inspection cover detaches while driving through water, causing grinding noise and damage. Evidence suggests dealer improperly installed cover inside bumper (instead of underneath), causing it to function like a plow in water.

When: Occurred while driving through flooded intersection; cover installed improperly by dealer prior to purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Grinding noise from front wheels while crossing flooded intersection; Part dislodged under passenger front wheel; Cover came loose and was dragging under vehicle

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer charged $1,380 for cover replacement; customer disputed liability, noting no collision damage to bumper. Independent inspection by customer's father revealed improper installation by dealer.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer blamed customer for collision damage (which did not exist) and refused warranty coverage.

Both of the rear doors will not open. This started with the driver rear door and now the other side will not open. You have to forcefully pull on the door any where from 10-15 times sometimes to get it to open. The longer it has been left alone the more times it takes to get it open again. This is not a driver issue this is a manufacturer problem. This is also a safety hazard. I have looked this…

Common questions

How serious is the body problem on the 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 121 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $1,500 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the body typically fail?

Across the 34 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most body failures cluster between 37,300 and 80,000 miles, with the median around 59,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 37,300; a quarter make it past 80,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,500 for body repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to body?

No active recalls currently cover body issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
