What stands out

Electrical accounts for 23% of all owner complaints filed against this vehicle, across 7 categories tracked.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: 2017 Mazda3 electrical issues range from solvable to unresolved: touchscreen ghost touches affecting multiple units remain unfixed despite recalls on earlier models, rearview cameras have a stalled recall with no parts availability, and various display/infotainment failures are common and costly. Expect potential safety-critical failures around the Forward Sensing Camera in hot weather and electrical system dropout in wet conditions.

Owners report widespread electrical gremlins across the 2017 Mazda3. The infotainment touchscreen is a frequent offender—it randomly activates without being touched, changing radio stations, adjusting volume, initiating calls, and toggling ADAS features while driving. This "ghost touch" problem appears identical to issues Mazda recalled on 2014-2016 models, yet the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge or repair it on 2017s, leaving owners stranded.

The rearview camera fails in multiple ways: misalignment at purchase, then flickering and distortion as the car ages. A recall (23V-487) was issued July 2023, but remains unimplemented—dealers cite missing parts and an incomplete remedy eight months later. Meanwhile, the infotainment system itself constantly reboots or goes black mid-drive, with one dealer quoting $1,450 for a display replacement.

The Forward Sensing Camera triggers repeated warning lights after sun exposure, though Mazda claims this is normal thermal shutdown, not a fault. Separate electrical failures cause the entire instrument cluster and infotainment to black out during rain or snow. One owner reports throttle unresponsiveness during acceleration—an intermittent problem that reoccurred even after Mazda's month-long diagnostic monitoring.

Failure modes owners describe

Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) thermal shutdown with warning lights

The FSC system triggers Smart City Brake and Smart City Fault amber warning lights after the vehicle sits in hot sun. Mazda characterized this as the FSC being unable to operate normally due to high temperatures, causing related system functions to temporarily stop—not a malfunction but a design behavior. Owner questioned whether this is always benign or could indicate a true FSC failure masked by heat.

When: After vehicle exposure to high temperatures; first occurrence May 2017, recurring May 2018

Symptoms owners cite: Smart City Brake amber warning light appears; Smart City Fault amber warning light appears; Warning lights may remain on during driving or may disappear while driving; Lights reappear after car sits in hot sun

Repairs/costs cited: Forward Sensing Camera replaced under dealer service; dynamic aiming procedure performed. Mazda instructed owners to cool system by running air conditioner or parking in shade.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: TSB15-006/17 (NHTSA ID: 101234390); Mazda stated FSC cannot operate normally due to high temperatures and system functions are temporarily stopped, not a malfunction

Electrical system failure in wet/snowy conditions

Instrument cluster, instrument panel, and infotainment system become inoperable during rain or snow, disabling the Forward Sensing Camera system and rearview camera. Failure is recurring in inclement weather. Owner's VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign 23V487000 (Back Over Prevention), so manufacturer stated recall did not apply.

When: Recurring failures during rain or snow operation; approximately 30,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Instrument cluster inoperable; Instrument panel inoperable; Infotainment system inoperable; Forward Sensing Camera system inoperable; Rearview camera inoperable during reverse in wet weather

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle not diagnosed or repaired

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer stated VIN not included in NHTSA Campaign 23V487000

Infotainment touchscreen ghost touches

Touchscreen makes random, unwanted inputs—changing stations, adjusting volume, initiating calls, navigating menus—without any physical contact. The screen is supposed to be disabled while driving for safety, but instead it randomly activates controls, creating significant driver distraction. Multiple owners report this issue affecting 2017 models, though Mazda issued a recall only for 2014-2016 models and refuses to address the problem on later years. Some owners report screen delamination accompanying the ghost touch behavior.

When: Reported failures from approximately 3 months to half a year before reporting; appears to be ongoing issue across multiple 2017 models

Symptoms owners cite: Touchscreen registers inputs with no physical contact; Randomly changes radio stations; Randomly adjusts volume; Randomly initiates phone calls; Navigates menus without input; Enables or disables ADAS features without input; Makes audible noises when activating; Screen delamination in some cases; Distraction during driving, especially in traffic

Repairs/costs cited: No repairs performed; Mazda has refused to acknowledge or fix the issue despite multiple complaints. 2014-2016 models received a recall for similar problem, but 2017 models excluded.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Mazda refuses to issue a recall or fix the issue; stated there are no active recalls for 2017 model

Infotainment system reboots and display malfunctions

Infotainment system constantly restarts or reboots while driving. Main display screen malfunctions and becomes inoperable. In some cases, the screen goes black or freezes during operation. These events are highly distracting and occur intermittently without warning.

When: Early in vehicle ownership (as early as 11,000 miles); recurring instances

Symptoms owners cite: Infotainment system restarts or reboots while driving; Main display screen malfunctions; Screen goes black; Navigation system freezes; Navigation system reboots while driving; High distraction during driving

Repairs/costs cited: One dealer quoted $1,450 for repairs; vehicle not repaired. Display interface identified as faulty and requiring replacement in one case.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Mazda stated there are no active recalls; vehicle out of warranty; manufacturer has not taken action

Rearview camera malfunction and recall delay

Rearview camera fails to display properly—initially misaligned, then developing flickering, distortion, and zoom issues. Mazda issued NHTSA Recall 23V-487 (Manufacturer Recall 6023G) in July 2023, but as of the complaint date (approximately 7 months later), the recall has not been implemented. Dealers cite incomplete remedy and unavailable parts. This represents an unresolved safety hazard for backup camera operation.

When: Issue present since purchase as new car in 2017; worsening in 2024; recall issued July 2023 but unimplemented

Symptoms owners cite: Rearview camera not centered; Video output distorted; Video output flickering; Video output zoomed out; Camera fails to display image in some instances

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers stated parts unavailable; recall remedy not yet available; recall status incomplete

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Recall 23V-487 (Manufacturer Recall 6023G) issued for Back Over Prevention; remedy status incomplete, parts unavailable

Instrument panel display intermittent failures

Instrument panel display becomes intermittently inoperable, particularly when depressing the brake pedal. No warning lights illuminate to alert the driver. Dealers have diagnosed the instrument panel as faulty and needing replacement.

When: As early as 40,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Instrument panel display intermittently inoperable; No warning light illumination; Failure occurs when depressing brake pedal

Repairs/costs cited: Instrument panel identified as faulty; replacement required but not yet performed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer has been informed of the failure

Throttle response loss during acceleration

Engine loses response to throttle input during light acceleration, then returns to normal operation after releasing and reapplying throttle. This is a sporadic issue that has occurred multiple times since purchase. Mazda monitored the issue with a recording device for a month but did not provide a resolution. Problem recurred after monitoring period.

When: First occurrence before January 2018; multiple recurrences since purchase August 2017; recurred after diagnostic monitoring

Symptoms owners cite: Engine running but no acceleration response to throttle; Loss of response during light throttle input at low speed (10 MPH); Normal operation resumes after releasing and reapplying throttle

Repairs/costs cited: Mazda installed recording device for one month in January to monitor issue; no repair documented; problem persisted after monitoring

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Mazda monitored issue with recording device but provided no resolution

The infotainment system is malfunctioning. It constantly restarts/reboots while I am driving and it is highly distracting. I contacted Mazda USA about this, but they responded by saying there are not active recalls for this car and the car isn't under warranty. I took it to a dealership and they quoted me $1450 for repairs. However, a problem such as this should not be occuring for a car that…

My rear camera is not centered when I bought my car as new in 2017. I reported the issue. But they told me it is normal. I got a letter from Mazda in 2022 about the rear camera recall. Then I asked them to do the recall. They told me they don't have parts. Recently, the video output is getting worse. It is distorted, flickering and zoomed out. I asked them again on 2024. They told the recall…
