Electrical ground problem affecting transmission control is evident by a Shift to Park warning that displays on the driver information center and prevents vehicle from being turned off. GM has this problem so we’ll documented that a TSB exists and is on file with NHTSA. The inability to turn off the vehicle when this is encountered is a significant safety issue. We paid out of pocket to have…

I have had two major issues. First is the whole "shift to park" message that you have to vigorously wiggle the transmission lever to get to go away so you may exit the vehicle. I have had it in the dealer for it once already and they said they replaced the wireing harness. This did nothing. I am the second owner and I had that done at about 35,000 miles but it never completely went away. Now I…

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 182 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $2,500 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 72 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 18,991 and 52,000 miles, with the median around 36,700. A quarter of owners report trouble before 18,991; a quarter make it past 52,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
