The failure pattern owners describe

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu has a cluster of serious electrical and control system failures that appear across dozens of complaints. Start/Stop system stalls are the most common—vehicles shut down at traffic lights, on hills, and during normal driving, sometimes multiple times daily. When the system engages, it often shudders, hesitates to restart, or rolls backward on inclines with no driver control. Owners report dealers claiming they "cannot reproduce" these frequent failures.

The shift-to-park sensor is another critical failure pattern. The vehicle refuses to shut off even when already in park, trapping occupants inside with audible alerts and headlights still on. Owners must wiggle the shifter repeatedly, restart the engine multiple times, or leave the car with electrical systems running—risking battery discharge. Chevrolet has documented this defect in Technical Service Bulletin 19-NA-206 but has not issued a recall.

Power loss while driving is consistently reported: engines cut out on highways and at red lights without warning, leaving owners stranded and requiring jump-starts. Instrument clusters fail unpredictably—fuel gauges show empty when full, speed and temperature gauges stop working, and the radio resets mid-drive. Brake lights fail, and braking becomes rough with grinding even after pad and rotor replacement. One owner's Apple CarPlay froze and directed them onto a one-way street in the wrong direction, causing a head-on collision. Dealers have repeatedly failed to diagnose these issues, and Chevy refuses recalls despite documented defects.

Failure modes owners describe

Auto Start/Stop malfunction and stalling

The Start/Stop system engages unexpectedly or fails to restart, causing stalling at traffic lights, on hills, and while driving. Vehicle shudders when resuming normal driving. In some cases, the system engages on inclines and the vehicle rolls backward without driver control.

When: At complete stops, traffic lights, inclines; varies in frequency from occasional to daily or multiple times per day

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle stalls at traffic lights or on inclines; Shuddering upon restart after Stop/Stop engagement; Unexpected shutdown while in drive or at stop; Vehicle rolls backward on inclines after stalling; Message 'Shift to Neutral. Restart Vehicle' appears; Delayed engagement when releasing brake pedal

Codes mentioned: No codes or warning lights in many cases; some show 'Service ESC'

Repairs/costs cited: Battery replaced multiple times (some owners report 4-5 replacements); issue persists; dealers unable to duplicate; intake charge tube and associated gaskets/clips replaced in some cases

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM case opened for some; buyback mentioned in one case; no recall issued; dealers claim cannot reproduce

Shift to Park sensor failure

The park shift sensor fails to recognize that the vehicle is in park, preventing the engine from shutting off and trapping the driver in the vehicle. Dashboard displays 'Shift to Park' message even when already in park. Requires multiple attempts to shut off the vehicle, sometimes 5+ times or wiggling the shifter repeatedly.

When: Occurs after shifting into park and attempting to turn off engine; frequency increases over time

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard message states 'Shift to Park' when vehicle is already in park; Engine will not shut off until message clears; Requires multiple restart-shift cycles or wiggling shifter to clear message; Vehicle trapped with audible alerts and headlights remaining on; Battery drain risk if left unresolved

Codes mentioned: No codes reported by owners; issue is switch-level failure

Repairs/costs cited: Shifter switch replaced; shifter assembly and pigtail connector replaced ($700+ cost including diagnostic); bracket bent forward as temporary fix; poor sensor bracket design noted

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM TSB 19-NA-206 documents this defect; known to service departments as common issue; no recall issued despite being documented in service bulletins

Electrical system failures and power loss

Vehicle experiences unexpected power loss, battery drain, and multiple electrical component failures. Includes situations where the vehicle loses all power while driving on highway or at traffic lights, requiring restart or jump-start.

When: Intermittent; occurs while driving on highway, approaching red lights, at traffic lights, and while parked

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle cuts off while driving on highway or surface streets; Engine completely shuts down while in motion or at stop; Requires jump-start to restart; Battery shows low voltage warning but testing shows battery and alternator normal; Message 'Battery Saver Active' appears; Message 'Power Steering Reduced. Drive Carefully' displayed
