The failure pattern owners describe

The dominant electrical complaint across these 105 complaints is the unresolved NHTSA Recall 24V-700 (Nissan R24B2), which began in September 2024. The defect involves excessive lithium-ion deposits in high-voltage battery cells that increase electrical resistance and risk rapid overheating during Level 3 DC fast charging via CHAdeMO. Nissan instructed owners to avoid Level 3 charging and promised a remedy—initially November 2024, then March 2025, then May or summer 2025—but as of the latest complaints, no permanent fix has been delivered. Many owners report parts remaining unavailable 18 months after recall notification.

Owners describe the consequence as a complete loss of fast-charging capability, which severely restricts daily use and makes long-distance travel impractical. Several report financial hardship: monthly payments, insurance, and parking fees with near-zero vehicle utility; one family cited $6,600 in costs for an essentially unusable vehicle.

A secondary pattern involves battery capacity issues unrelated to charging: sudden dramatic drops in reported state-of-charge while driving (from 100% to 20% in minutes), erratic range readouts under load, and low internal resistance warnings that prevent vehicle restart or recharge. One owner describes the recall claiming DC-charging-only risk as "disingenuous" when high internal resistance affects the battery at all times.

Other electrical failures include E-Pedal brake system malfunctions, EV System errors with loss of power, parking brake independent activation and failure to release, VCM failures requiring multiple replacements, and forward-facing camera overheating disabling collision avoidance. One backup camera issue appears in multiple complaints with a suggested recall code.

The consistent criticism: Nissan's software-only "interim" remedy does not fix the underlying battery defect; it merely monitors for conditions and disables the vehicle if detected. Owners see this as unacceptable because the battery remains defective, the car can become immobilized, and no real repair timeline exists.

Failure modes owners describe

High-voltage battery overheating risk during Level 3 fast charging

Excessive lithium-ion deposits in battery cells increase electrical resistance, creating risk of rapid battery heating and potential fire during Level 3 DC fast charging (CHAdeMO). Defect present since manufacturing; identified in recall 24V-700.

When: September 2024 recall issued; no permanent remedy as of latest complaints in March-July 2025

Symptoms owners cite: Loss of Level 3 fast-charging capability per manufacturer instruction; No warning before overheating occurs; Risk of battery fire during fast charging

Codes mentioned: 24V-700, R24B2

No actual battery replacement or defect repair available. Owners report parts remain unavailable 18 months after recall notification.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 24V-700 (R24B2) issued September 2024. Owners instructed not to use Level 3 charging. Software-only interim remedy offered. Remedy deadlines missed repeatedly: November 2024, March 2025, May 2025, summer 2025.

Sudden battery state-of-charge drops while driving

Battery charge indicator drops dramatically and instantaneously (e.g., 100% to 20% or 18% to 5% within seconds) while vehicle is in normal operation on highway, unrelated to actual discharge. Owners report erratic range and capacity readouts, particularly when battery is under 50% or under heavy load.

When: Reported at various mileages; one incident at 50,000 miles, another at 18,000 miles; one owner reports issue starting summer 2025

Symptoms owners cite: Instantaneous gauge drop while driving at highway speeds; Range indicator fluctuates wildly (e.g., from 100% to 20% in minutes); Erratic range and capacity readouts under load or at lower state of charge; Warning messages to charge immediately displayed when charge is actually sufficient; Message that charge will drop dramatically below ~125 miles on mountain/hilly terrain

Codes mentioned: 24V-700, 23V494000

Repairs/costs cited: Owners report dealer unable to duplicate failure or unwilling to diagnose without test drive. One owner reports battery modules (8 of ~24) replaced by dealer but erratic behavior persists. Another owner states battery tested and replacement needed under warranty; replacement battery unavailable with 6+ month wait.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Related to recall 24V-700 (high internal resistance issue). Parts remain unavailable. One owner suspects firmware update received for campaign 23V494000 may have triggered the behavior.

Common questions

How serious is the electrical problem on the 2020 Nissan Leaf?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 108 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $850 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?

Across the 10 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most electrical failures cluster between 9,570 and 42,450 miles, with the median around 18,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 9,570; a quarter make it past 42,450. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to electrical?

Yes — 1 active recall(s) cover electrical issues on this vehicle. Recall fixes are always free regardless of mileage or warranty status. Use the VIN decoder at the top of the page to check if your specific vehicle is affected.
