The failure pattern owners describe
The most common failure is sudden, complete loss of motive power during normal driving. Vehicle goes dark at speeds from 30 to 70 mph—no warning lights beforehand—and either loses acceleration entirely or emergency-brakes to a stop mid-traffic. Drivers report the "Engine Control Error" or "Electrical System Error" message appears only *after* the shutdown, leaving no time to react or steer to safety.
Owners describe their cars becoming immobilized in intersection, unable to shift into drive or reverse, while traffic piles up behind them. Several had the vehicle towed and discovered the 12-volt battery completely drained. Others needed the high-voltage battery module, battery controller, or entire power control module replaced—with dealers citing $17,000 repair bills. Porsche's software updates and module swaps haven't held; owners report the same failures happening days or weeks after dealer "repairs."
A recurring secondary problem: the instrument cluster goes dark for 20–30 seconds during highway driving, then reboots. One owner's Taycan caught fire while parked during a charging session. Brake hose recalls are also outstanding with parts on backorder.
Dealers acknowledge they're aware of the defect but have no permanent fix ready. Multiple owners requested lemon law buy-back; Porsche offered partial coverage in some cases but declined full responsibility in others. The root cause remains unidentified after 43 separate complaints.

On two different occasions the car had catastrophic failures due to the 12 v battery draining for no reason. And one occasion the car had a catastrophic failure due to the main battery system having a failure. All of this happened in the first four months of ownership. All times the vehicle with stationary.
Car displayed the following message: Electrical system error Park vehicle in a safe place
The vehicle experiences a sudden and dangerous malfunction while driving. Without any prior warning, the vehicle begins to shake and then immediately brakes on its own, coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of traffic. Only after the vehicle has already braked and shut down does an “Engine Control Error” message appear on the display. There is no advance alert and no time for the driver to react…
I was trying to leave a parking spot. I put the car in drive mode & it didn't move. The vehicle showed the message: 'motor control error ' move vehicle to a safe place' and was encircled by a red light. I turned the car off and on several times thinking vehicle would reset itself. But vehicle would not move. The car would go in neutral mode, but not drive mode.
While driving, car began to shake abruptly and stopped itself. Dash flashed motor control error in red and the system control error and was complete unresponsive and undriveable. Car was towed to Porsche and they have no answers after 3 days. This was very dangerous, as the car slammed on the breaks and stopped in the middle of the road. Had it been a highway, I could have been hit.
The car once I started, it gave us a red warning that said electrical system problem. At that point, I was unable to put the car in drive or put the car in reverse. The only thing I was able to do is put the car in neutral. The car would not move. The same issue happened when I was driving with the car. It gave me the error message at which point I had to pull over on the shoulder.
