When does it fail?
Of the 11 engine complaints filed for the 2022 Toyota GR86, here's the actual mileage breakdown — failures cluster heaviest at 0-25,000 mi.
Each bar shows the share of total complaints filed at that mileage range. Peak failure window highlighted. Some owners report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 miles symptom-free. Maintenance habits and driving conditions shift the curve as much as mileage alone.
No new NHTSA engine complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 3 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering engine on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
Owners consistently describe a manufacturing defect where excessive RTV silicone sealant used at the oil pan gasket breaks apart during operation, with fragments traveling through the oil pickup tube to clog the strainer screen and pump inlet. This blocks oil circulation, starving the engine of lubrication and causing catastrophic failure—engine seizure, internal metal-on-metal damage, and in at least one case, engine fire.
The defect appears present from delivery but can manifest anytime from 500 miles through 32,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Most troubling: oil pressure warning lights often fail to illuminate before failure, leaving drivers without notice of the dangerous condition. One owner reported oil checked at 500 miles and again on July 12, topped off to normal level, only to have the engine fail 23 days later with zero warning lights.
Owners found visible RTV sealant residue in oil filler tubes and on dipsticks before engine failure occurred. At least one fire resulted from this defect. Multiple owners state this is a known issue among GR86 enthusiast groups nationwide. Toyota has not issued a recall. Dealers are authorizing engine replacements on a case-by-case basis—sometimes denying coverage citing high-speed driving—while leaving owners facing $22,000 to $33,000+ repair costs and vehicles sitting in dealer service bays for 30–76+ business days.
Failure modes owners describe
Catastrophic engine failure from oil starvation via RTV silicone blockage
RTV silicone gasket sealant between oil pan and engine breaks apart, fragments travel through oil pickup tube, clog the oil strainer screen and pump inlet, starving the engine of oil circulation. Owners report excess RTV applied during manufacturing. Results in complete engine seizure, piston damage, and metal-on-metal contact damage to engine internals.
When: Highly variable: as early as 500 miles post-delivery through 32,000 miles. One case at 6,700 miles with fire. Another at 23 days of ownership. Pattern suggests manufacturing defect present from delivery but timing depends on driving conditions and oil circulation pressure.
Symptoms owners cite: Oil pressure warning light may not illuminate before failure (noted in at least one case despite critically low oil); No warning lights in multiple cases until sudden complete engine failure; Visible excess RTV silicone in oil filler tube and on dipstick before catastrophic failure; Engine knocking or detonation sounds from oil deprivation; Smoke and fire in at least one documented case; Sudden complete loss of engine power while driving
Repairs/costs cited: Engine replacement required. Repair estimates provided to owner: $22,000 and $33,000. Multiple dealers have held vehicles 34+ business days awaiting Toyota corporate warranty authorization. One vehicle spent 76 total business days in dealer shops over 8.5 months ownership.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Toyota corporate has not issued a recall despite multiple complaints. Dealers are handling warranty repair authorization on case-by-case basis, some denying coverage citing high-speed driving. No official Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) mentioned. Toyota customer relations have provided no documented assistance in multiple cases.
Failure of oil monitoring/warning system to alert driver
Oil pressure warning light and low oil level indicators fail to illuminate before catastrophic oil starvation failure occurs. One documented case had oil changed at 500 miles, topped off July 12, 2025, and failed August 4, 2025 with no warning lights despite oil being at critically low levels.
When: Occurs in final stages before engine seizure; monitoring system does not provide timely warning.
Symptoms owners cite: No oil pressure warning light illumination despite oil starvation in progress; No low oil level indicator activation despite oil at critical levels; Complete absence of warnings before sudden engine failure
Engine fire due to catastrophic failure
At least one documented case where oil starvation failure resulted in engine fire. Vehicle caught fire while at complete stop at approximately 6,700 miles. Fire department extinguished fire; vehicle was destroyed. Operator experienced smoke inhalation and reported to emergency room the following day.
When: 6,700 miles; occurred while vehicle at complete stop
Symptoms owners cite: Smoke visible from vehicle; Flames/fire engulfing engine compartment; Sudden and complete vehicle failure
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle destroyed. Body shop investigation performed but results not detailed in narrative.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer was not notified of failure.

Engine failure due to the manufacture applying too much silicone that restricted oil flow.
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota GR86. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine blew. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the silicone and oil had clogged the line. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage…
These gr86’s are so commonly known for having excessive rtv sealant in the engine with the oil intake tubes becoming blocked up. I contacted Toyota about a solution, but there’s nothing. No recall. Everything is case by case. And if you track your car with the included track day when you buy the car the warranty can become null and void.
Engine knocking due to oil deprivation. Have heard and read articles of RTV being the culprit as it clogs the oil pick up. Although the dealership hasn’t exactly told me what caused oil deprivation on my car.
COMPONENT/SYSTEM FAILURE: Engine - Catastrophic engine failure due to oil starvation on August 4, 2025. FA24 engine consumed excessive oil without triggering oil pressure warning light or low oil level indicator. Oil was changed at 500 miles after purchase and topped off on July 12, 2025. Engine failed 23 days later with no warning. Vehicle has been at dealership since August 4, 2025 (34+…
Unknown/ seems to be to much RTV used on the oil pan when the car was being built there are multiple reported cases of this and the excess RTV is coming loose and falling in the oil pan which then is being sucked up through the pick up tube and causing oil starvation
Due to recent events and issues , I have found excess silicone stuck in my oil pan filler tube . I have also found residue of silicone in my engine dipstick. I am afraid this will cause oil starvation as it has happened to owners already. I am afraid for the safety of me and my passengers in the vehicle .
There are excess RTV silicone that can be seen from engine oil dip stick. Sign of having excess RTV that can cause damage to the enginer. Same issue happened to one of the GR86 enthusiast group member having excess RTV got mixed with the engine oil and it got stuck through the oil pick up strainer that cause to clogged and oil starvation and damage to the engine.
My 2022 Toyota GR86 along with many other GR86 owners on a national GR86 owners group I am apart of on FB are experiencing problems with the RTV silicone gasket that seats between the oil pan and the engine. It is breaking off and clogging the oil mesh net and the pump. causing the engine to starve for oil resulting in complete engine failure. And in the case of one 86 in California the engine…
The contact owned a 2022 Toyota GR86. The contact was at a complete stop when the vehicle exploded into flames.
