The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report a wide array of electrical and safety system failures in the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. The most critical and recurring issue is unintended automatic emergency braking activation, where the forward collision avoidance system slams brakes without obstruction present—sometimes from highway speeds down to 15 mph. Multiple owners sustained neck and wrist injuries; one narrowly avoided running a stop sign. These events occur unpredictably despite completed recall repairs. Dealers struggle to duplicate the failures during short test drives, making diagnosis difficult, and some have responded by advising owners to manually disable the safety system before each drive.

Digital display blackouts leave drivers without speedometer, fuel gauge, or headlight controls—critical safety information. Some failures follow botched over-the-air software updates. Blind spot monitors malfunction constantly, flashing false warnings when no vehicles are present, and paradoxically disable window and door lock controls when active. The turn signal stalk reverses direction after completing turns, triggering false lane-change signals to other drivers. Complete electrical shutdowns with melted fuses have occurred at low mileage, rendering vehicles inoperable roadside with unresponsive brakes. Battery drain overnight, failed camera systems, fuel splashing during fill-up, anti-theft alarms sounding with no trigger, and wireless charging failures round out the electrical issues. Dealership responses have ranged from unable to duplicate the problem to advising drivers to work around the faults rather than fix them.

Failure modes owners describe

Unintended Automatic Emergency Braking Activation

The forward collision avoidance automatic emergency braking system activates without warning or valid obstruction, causing abrupt hard stops at highway and city speeds. Occurs unpredictably, sometimes after recall repairs. Dealers cannot duplicate the issue in short test drives despite owners experiencing it repeatedly over thousands of miles.

When: Primarily between 5,000–15,000 miles; some as low as 2,800 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Sudden hard braking from 50–55 mph down to 15 mph; Brakes lock up with no vehicle or obstruction ahead; Forward Collision Warning light illuminates; Vehicle comes to complete stop mid-drive; Neck and wrist strain from abrupt deceleration; Beeping and stopping at shadows on ground (per dealer observation)

Codes mentioned: Forward Collision Avoidance system fault, Front camera module malfunction

Repairs/costs cited: Front camera replacement (per recall), electrical system reflash, front collision wiring and ECU replacement attempted; failures persist post-repair. GM technical engineer directed owners to manually disable emergency braking controls in console before every drive.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign Number 24V133000 (Electrical System, Forward Collision Avoidance) issued; recall repairs performed on multiple vehicles without resolving the failure. GM diagnostic engineer suggested disabling safety features as workaround rather than fixing root cause.

Digital Display and Infotainment System Failure

Instrument cluster and infotainment screen go blank, lose functionality, or display incorrect information while driving. Speedometer, fuel gauge, and headlight controls become inaccessible. Some owners report unexpected software update causing battery drain. Screen blackouts lasting 30 seconds to 1 minute render critical safety information unavailable.

When: First occurrence 5–6 months after purchase; varies between 554 miles and 7,500 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Dash cluster goes completely blank while driving; No speedometer, fuel gauge, or console information visible; Infotainment screen unresponsive; Speedometer alternates between MPH and KPH; Screen blacks out intermittently during operation; Inability to access headlight controls; Over-the-air software update causes battery to drain while parked; Screen glitch requires 10+ minute battery cable disconnect to reset

Codes mentioned: Software glitch (unspecified), Battery drain after OTA update

Repairs/costs cited: Dash and radio component replacement performed on some vehicles; no lasting fix. Temporary solution: disconnect negative battery cable for 10+ minutes to restore display. One owner reported dealership saw issue in multiple 2023 Colorados.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Software updates issued; failed OTA update on 7/24/2023 weekend caused battery drain. Dealership stated no problem found after computer system update in at least one case.

Blind Spot Monitoring System Malfunction

Blind spot warning lights activate continuously or intermittently with no vehicles present. System becomes unreliable and distracts driver. Often linked to window control and door lock failures. More frequent after dark. Firmware updates do not resolve the issue permanently.

When: Occurs unpredictably throughout ownership; worsens in low-light conditions

Symptoms owners cite: Both blind spot mirror warning lights illuminate with no vehicles nearby; Blind spot light flickers continuously after dark; Light activates when trees or traffic signs enter view; Blind spot activates more during braking or deceleration; Double-flash pattern when no vehicles present; Light toggles on and off randomly; System fights lane changes when lane assist is active

Codes mentioned: Side object detection sensor fault, Mirror control module malfunction

Repairs/costs cited: Firmware update attempted; owners report issue returns after fix or continues despite update. Dealer stated no recommendation for permanent fix. Window switches and door lock button render useless when indicators are active.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No manufacturer response documented; dealership firmware updates ineffective.

Window and Door Lock Control Loss

Windows fail to operate and door locks become unresponsive when blind spot monitors activate. Occurs intermittently, sometimes resolving on their own before recurring. Part orders placed for window repair remain unfulfilled.

When: Correlates with blind spot monitor activation; at low mileage (under 11,000 miles noted)

Symptoms owners cite: Windows will not roll down when blind spot monitor illuminates; Door lock button on driver side does not function; Window switches become useless during malfunction events; Light on door lock button cycles on and off randomly; Windows go down on their own without driver input; Issue resolves intermittently then recurs

Codes mentioned: Window motor control malfunction, Door lock actuator fault

Repairs/costs cited: Parts ordered for window repair; as of report date, part still on order with no ETA. No permanent repair documented.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No documented manufacturer response; parts remain backordered.

Turn Signal Stalk Malfunction

Turn signal indicator returns past its detent position after standard turns, initiating unintended opposite turn signal activation for multiple cycles. Creates dangerous false lane-change signals to other drivers. Replacement stalk exhibits same behavior after period of time.

When: Present from early ownership; reoccurs after dealer replacement

Symptoms owners cite: Turn signal lever returns past stop position after 90-degree turn; Left turn signal automatically cycles 3 times after right turn completion; Stalk sometimes sticks, preventing manual turn signal control; Difficult to turn off unintended signals

Codes mentioned: Turn signal stalk position sensor fault

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer replaced turn signal indicator; issue improved initially then reappeared with replacement unit. Owner reports multiple online complaints of same issue being minimized as minor annoyance.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No documented manufacturer response.

Backup Camera Inoperative

Backup camera fails to function in reverse or when manually activated. Dealership diagnosed pinched harness requiring replacement but parts unavailable. As of five months after initial service appointment, no parts delivered and repair unresolved. Mandatory safety equipment remains non-functional.

When: Failure discovered July 2023; unresolved as of December 2023 (5+ months)

Symptoms owners cite: Backup camera does not display image in reverse; Manual backup camera activation produces no image; Inability to see behind vehicle for reverse operation

Codes mentioned: Camera harness pinch fault (per dealer diagnosis)

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership ordered replacement harness; no ETA provided. As of December 1, repair part never arrived despite repeated contact with dealership and GM corporate.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM contacted by owner; no response or resolution provided. Dealership unable to provide ETA.

Vehicle Shutdown and Loss of Electrical Systems

Vehicle experiences complete electrical system failure mid-drive with warning message on display, followed by inability to restart. Brakes become unresponsive and all electrical systems including lights, displays, and climate control become inoperative. Melted fuses indicate severe electrical fault. Issues worsen over time.

When: First occurrence around 7,300 miles; repeated after second incident

Symptoms owners cite: Service Safety Retrain System warning appears on dash; Vehicle shuts off while driving without warning; Vehicle will not restart after shutdown; Brake pedal becomes unresponsive; All electrical systems die: headlights, brake lights, turn signals go dark; Digital display goes black, no speedometer or information visible; Multiple melted fuses discovered: ECM fuse, body control module fuses

Codes mentioned: Service Safety Retrain System fault, ECM malfunction, Body control module failure

Repairs/costs cited: Multiple melted fuses found (4 total): ECM, body control module, and others. Dealership spent only 20 minutes diagnosing before declaring inability to duplicate problem despite being shown video evidence and witness law enforcement report.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No documented manufacturer response; vehicle towed twice, left unrepaired after dealership visit.

Lane Keep Assist and Steering Intervention Issues

Lane Keep Assist sensor activates unintendedly, causing vehicle to veer out of intended lane. Occurs at moderate speeds during normal driving conditions.
