The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: A 2023 Elantra electrical system is prone to multiple serious failures—dead batteries, non-functional horns and cameras, window/door lock jams, and unintended brake/steering activation—with dealers either unable to fix them or unwilling to help. If you're considering one, get a detailed pre-purchase inspection and test every electrical feature, then think hard about whether the risk is worth it.

Owners report a broad range of electrical malfunctions affecting safety and daily usability. Window and door-lock failures are frequent: multiple owners describe windows that stop working intermittently or all four at once, accompanied by door locks that jam from both inside and outside—a major safety concern during emergencies. Some owners also report battery drain issues, with one vehicle losing charge overnight repeatedly even after three replacements, and another draining completely while driving at highway speed after an oil-pressure sensor failure.

Horn failures dominate the complaints. Several owners report horns that fail after minimal mileage or brief ownership, with one owner replacing the horn four times under warranty. Dealers allegedly stock replacement horns in bulk, suggesting this is a widespread known defect.

Backup-camera failures appear early in vehicle life, showing either no function or green-screen display with non-responsive proximity sensors. Dashboard warning lights malfunction—ADAS system lights cycling on and off repeatedly, blinker failures coinciding with light-system glitches. One owner reports an emergency-brake system activating on its own without driver input while driving at normal speeds; another describes independent brake application and steering correction triggered by a faulty rear cross-track warning at highway speed.

Dealers have repeatedly told owners nothing can be done, ignored lemon-law requests, refused documentation in writing, and failed follow-up on complaints. Corporate has similarly ignored owner outreach despite complaints filed months prior.

Failure modes owners describe

Window and Door Lock Electrical Failure

Power windows fail intermittently or all four windows stop working simultaneously; electric door locks jam and cannot be opened from inside or outside. Owners describe these events as recurring, sometimes correcting themselves, sometimes requiring dealer intervention.

When: From early ownership; one owner reported onset March 5, 2023; failures ongoing through June 25 or later

Symptoms owners cite: Rear and front windows inoperable; All four windows fail together; All four doors lock and cannot open from inside or outside; Intermittent operation

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer attempted repairs 4 times out of 6 service visits with no lasting resolution; told owner nothing further could be done

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Corporate ignored lemon-law inquiry and buyback request; dealership denied lemon status and ignored repeated owner requests

Horn Failure

Horn becomes inoperable or fails repeatedly under warranty. Multiple owners report horn failures; one owner replaced horn four times, another twice in under a year. Dealer network reportedly stocks replacement horns routinely, and multiple TSBs exist at dealerships according to one owner.

When: One owner at 7,000 miles after 1.5 years; another replaced twice in less than one year; fourth owner replaced four times

Symptoms owners cite: Horn does not sound when button depressed; Complete horn inoperability; Relay actuates but horn silent

Repairs/costs cited: Replaced under warranty multiple times without permanent fix; one dealer had multiple replacement horns in stock; owners report multiple TSBs exist at dealerships

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recall issued; no permanent fix implemented despite TSBs and multiple warranty replacements

Backup Camera Failure

Rear-view camera stops functioning or displays green screen only. Proximity sensors do not activate. Two owners report this failure occurring before 7,000 miles. One owner confirms this is a known defect in Hyundai line.

When: Before 7,000 miles in both reported cases

Symptoms owners cite: Camera does not display; Green screen display only; Proximity sensors non-responsive; No visual feedback in reverse

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Owner notes this is a known defect in Hyundai vehicles but no recall or fix mentioned

ADAS and Dashboard Warning Light Malfunction

Advanced Driver Assistance System and dashboard warning lights cycle on and off repeatedly despite vehicle being powered on and off. One owner reports all dash lights illuminating intermittently; another reports rear cross-track warning light triggering independent braking and steering.

When: Ongoing; one owner with video and picture evidence collected on different days and times

Symptoms owners cite: All dashboard lights illuminating and extinguishing repeatedly; ADAS system lights malfunction; Blinkers non-functional during light-system glitches; Rear cross-track warning light illuminates without cause; Independent brake application; Independent steering correction

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealership not cooperating; blowing off owner per one complaint

Emergency Brake Self-Activation

Electronic emergency brake activates on its own while driving without driver input. One owner reports activation while maintaining 45 mph in straight line, then again while turning into parking spot. Handbrake toggle did not resolve; owner had to wait for automatic release. Owner notes other same-model, same-year drivers have experienced this at freeway speeds.

When: While driving at 45 mph; related failures noted by other 2023 Elantra owners at higher highway speeds

Symptoms owners cite: Emergency brake activates without driver input; Brakes and brake pedal activate without pressure applied; Vehicle stops or decelerates unexpectedly; Manual handbrake control ineffective during fault

Battery Drain / Dead Battery

Battery dies overnight while vehicle parked, recurring issue. One owner reports vehicle killed battery seven times, replaced battery three times, eighth incident occurred after replacement lasted only eight months. Another owner experienced complete battery drain while driving at highway speed; vehicle shut down and required jump-start to move into neutral. Battery drain also occurred in case where oil-pressure sensor failed completely.

When: Recurring overnight; one incident at highway speed after oil-pressure sensor failure; latest incident after 8-month replacement battery lifespan

Symptoms owners cite: Battery completely dead after overnight parking; Battery drains while vehicle not in use; Complete power loss while driving; Vehicle shuts down mid-drive requiring jump-start

Repairs/costs cited: Battery replaced 3 times; latest replacement lasted 8 months before another complete drain; one case required 12-volt battery and module replacement in addition to engine replacement

Oil-Pressure Sensor Failure

Oil-pressure warning light fails to illuminate until oil-drain plug falls out completely, at which point the light comes on too late. Vehicle loses all power and shuts down within 2 minutes on highway at 70 mph, requiring jump-start. Engine failure likely due to complete oil loss without adequate warning.

When: Oil completely drained before warning light illuminated; failure at highway speed approximately 70 mph

Symptoms owners cite: Oil-pressure warning light does not illuminate during oil loss; Complete vehicle power loss; Engine shutdown while driving; Catastrophic engine failure

Repairs/costs cited: Engine replacement required; 12-volt battery and module replacement also needed; oil-drain plug fallen out completely

General Electrical System Malfunction

Broad electrical issues reported from day one of ownership with inconsistent symptoms. One owner reports continuous on-and-off electrical signals indicating malfunction for months, windshield wipers failing mid-drive during rainstorm. Another reports multiple error messages upon entering vehicle, burning smell from console, aftermarket-looking hood about to pop open, and seat belt installed incorrectly.

When: From day of purchase (December 24, 2022); windshield wiper failure May 2023; ongoing from purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Electrical signals and warning indicators cycling on and off; Windshield wipers stopping mid-operation; Error messages displayed; Burning smell from console; Structural issues (hood appearance)

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership unable or unwilling to diagnose or repair after multiple visits and months of complaints

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Corporate told owner nothing could be done because dealership is privately owned; dealership provided no written documentation and hung up on owner during complaint calls

Horn is inoperable due to internal fault. Horn receives power when button is depressed, relay actuates, but horn does not sound. There is no warning system in place for this fault.

The horn constantly fails and needs to be replaced. This is not only an issue with the Elantra, as I've seen it as a common issue among a range of Hyundai vehicles. Even my local dealership has many horns on hand, as it is so common for them to be replaced, as they stated. I've gone through 2 horns in less than a year. This is complete negligence on Hyundai's part, as the horn is a critical…

Low pressure oil light did not come on until the oil drain plug had completely fallen out. Once the light came on, the vehicle was slowed and came to a stop on the side of the highway within 2 minutes. The car completely shut off as if the battery were dead. It had to be jumped in order to put the car into neutral for the tow truck. The safety issue is that the hwy we were traveling on is…

I have contacted the dealer. I am almost ready to get a lawyer. This is the 4th lemon I’ve been sold. Seat belt is installed wrong. Software updates are available and screaming at me but the dealership Will not call Me back. Two days now. Hyundai finance has treated me Disrespectfully. I have error messages when I enter the car. The hood looks aftermarket and about to pop up. The NHtsa website…
