What stands out

Electrical accounts for 19% of all owner complaints filed against this vehicle, across 5 categories tracked.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of 2025 GMC Sierra trucks report widespread electrical system failures starting at very low mileage. The most common complaint is complete audio loss affecting the radio, turn-signal chimes, and safety alerts—happening intermittently or dozens of times per ownership, with dealerships unable to identify the cause after multiple visits and GM corporate involvement.

Safety-critical failures include ADAS systems (collision detection, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors) malfunctioning or firing falsely; engine stalls at traffic lights with warning messages; unintended gear shifts from Park to Drive without warning, resulting in at least one crash; and loss of power braking following stall events. One owner reports the vehicle shifted into Drive and accelerated into a garage while parked, with video evidence of flickering headlights.

Secondary electrical issues include radio button failures requiring dangerous steering-wheel interaction while driving; side mirrors failing to return to preset positions; backup camera shutdowns when warm (suspected thermal issue with the Video Processor Module); poor backup camera visibility at night; door latch misalignment; and OnStar/GPS module failure with unavailable replacement parts. Some dealers acknowledge selling vehicles with known issues without disclosure. Dealerships have reset systems without repairing root causes and cannot diagnose the underlying problems despite multiple service attempts and GM corporate consultation.

When: As early as 467 miles; recurring across ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Collision detection fails to function; Automatic emergency braking engages for non-existent objects; Advanced cruise control stops working; Parking sensors malfunction

Repairs/costs cited: Multiple parts replaced at dealership; true cause remains undiagnosed across seven service visits

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM corporate contacted; unable to resolve issue; vehicle returned claiming issue resolved, then recurs

Audio system complete loss

Intermittent total loss of audio output affecting radio, turn-signal sounds, and safety alerts including collision warnings and seatbelt reminders.

When: Recurring; approximately every third drive for some owners; at least 20 times over 10 months for another owner

Symptoms owners cite: Radio power button inoperative; No sound from radio, turn signals, or warning alerts; Silence in all interior audio; Audio returns after vehicle sits and cools down

Codes mentioned: PIT 6408

Repairs/costs cited: GMC dealership retained vehicle over one week; unable to identify cause; GM corporate engineers consulted with no resolution after three repair attempts

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealership unable to repair; GM corporate investigating

Radio control buttons and display failure

Radio power button, channel change buttons on steering wheel, volume control, and HOME button become inoperative, forcing drivers to interact with radio display while driving.

When: Ongoing; everyday for some controls, intermittent for others

Symptoms owners cite: Radio power button inoperative; Channel change buttons on steering wheel inoperative; Radio volume stops working; HOME button inoperative

Repairs/costs cited: Certified GM service dept confirmed issues but unable to repair

Engine stall with START ENGINE message

Engine shuts off while vehicle is in gear or at traffic lights; START ENGINE warning appears; restart temporary; occurs unpredictably.

When: At approximately 16,000 miles; also reported at traffic lights and while reversing

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stalls unexpectedly while stopped or reversing; START ENGINE message displayed; Vehicle requires restart; Auto START/STOP feature involved

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle not serviced for this issue

ESC/TSC system failure with limp mode

When: 02/27/2026; recurred 05/01/2026

Symptoms owners cite: Check ESC warning light; Check TSC warning light; Orange warning lights illuminate; Vehicle enters limp mode; Engine chugging/hesitation; Exhaust flap valve failed with chirping noise

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership reset system but did not repair root cause; muffler replacement performed for exhaust flap valve failure (04/28/2026)

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: OnStar detected critical issue; dealership reset system only

Side mirror preset malfunction

Side mirrors lower automatically when shifting to reverse for ground/parking line visibility, but fail to return to original position approximately 33% of the time; owners must manually reset using preset buttons.

When: Recurring; happens at random intervals

Symptoms owners cite: Mirrors fail to return to preset position after shifting out of reverse; Mirrors lower as designed but do not restore position; Manual reset required

Unintended gear shift and loss of braking control

Vehicle shifts from Park to Drive without driver input; accelerates uphill; no warnings; brakes do not function; headlights flicker irregularly. In separate incident, vehicle stalls at traffic light, then loses power braking after restart.

When: March 2025 (shift incident); traffic light stall followed by brake failure (second occurrence)

Symptoms owners cite: Uncommanded shift from Park to Drive; Acceleration without driver input; No warning before shift; Brakes non-functional; Loss of power braking after restart; Headlights flicker on and off

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle crashed; ESIS inspection inconclusive

When: Recurring; occurs when vehicle is warm/running

Symptoms owners cite: Cameras shut down while driving; Cameras operate normally after cool-down period; Poor night visibility on backup camera

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM investigating suspected Video Processor Module thermal issue

Lack on audio impacts the safety of the vehicle. Has happened dozens of times and appears to be larger GM issue that is u resolved. Has occurred at least 20 times since I bought the vehicle 10 months ago.

Common questions

How serious is the electrical problem on the 2025 GMC Sierra?

It's a meaningful issue. 16 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $850.

At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?

Based on the 16 complaints filed, electrical issues most often appear around 16,000 miles. Some report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 with no symptoms. Maintenance habits matter — vehicles that received timely fluid services and were not regularly overworked tend to last longer.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to electrical?

No active recalls currently cover electrical issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
