What stands out

Airbags accounts for 45% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 11 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 130 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2005 Ford Ranger has been subject to multiple Takata airbag recalls (campaigns spanning 2015–2023) due to risk of inflator rupture and metal/powder projectile ejection. The core problem: recall parts have remained on extended backorder nationwide, leaving owners stranded with vehicles marked unsafe but unavoidable to drive. Multiple owners report waiting 1.5 years or longer for replacement modules, despite Ford's repeated claims that "parts are now available." Dealers consistently confirm unavailability and cannot provide delivery estimates. Ford has declined to provide loaner vehicles despite acknowledging the hazard.

Compounding the issue, some owners report complete airbag non-deployment in serious accidents—rollover, T-bone, rear-end, and side-impact collisions—resulting in severe occupant injuries and vehicle total losses. Additionally, one owner experienced an airbag warning light illuminate for the first time immediately after a recall repair, suggesting the retrofit work may have introduced an electrical or sensor fault. A separate report documents improper seating of a replacement airbag module during recall service, and clockspring failures leaving owners with inoperative warning lights, cruise control, and horn.

The pattern suggests systemic problems: parts starvation during recall execution, possible technician training gaps on 15S22 retrofit installation, and insufficient quality control during replacement work. Owners remain exposed to both the original Takata hazard and potentially new faults created during remediation.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata inflator defect - prolonged recall backorder

Owners received recall notices (campaigns 15V322, 16V036, 16V384, 17V788, 17V880, 23V306, 23V125) for Takata airbag inflators due to risk of explosion and metal/powder projectiles on deployment. Multiple dealers confirmed parts unavailable for extended periods despite recall letters claiming parts were available.

When: 2015–2023; some owners waited 1.5+ years or multiple years with no repair appointment available

Symptoms owners cite: Recall notice received stating vehicle unsafe to drive; Risk of serious injury or death from explosive airbag deployment; Powdery substance and metal fragments expelled from airbag on deployment; Airbag light illuminated on dashboard

Codes mentioned: 15V322000, 16V036000, 16V384000, 17V788000, 17V880000, 23V306000, 23V125000, 14V343000

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement airbag modules required. Parts remained on extended backorder at dealers nationwide. Owners faced months-to-years-long waits. One repair after recall retrofit cost $253.99 to customer.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall notices issued; Ford stated parts available but failed to supply dealers. No loaner vehicles offered despite comparable Honda recall program providing them. Ford indicated parts would arrive within specified timeframes but repeatedly missed those dates.

Airbag non-deployment in impacts

In multiple reported accidents (rear-end collision flipping vehicle, T-bone collision, hydroplane/spin-out/rollover, side-impact collision at intersection), front airbags failed to deploy despite impact severity meeting normal deployment thresholds.

When: Occurred at 56k–228k miles; mileage range unknown for some incidents

Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment during significant vehicle impact; Vehicle total loss or severe damage; Occupant injuries to head, neck, back, ribs, arms, legs requiring hospitalization; PTSD from accident

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicles towed and deemed total loss or destroyed by salvage/insurance. No repair attempted in most cases.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Not specified for most non-deployment incidents. One case noted VIN was in NHTSA Campaign 23V306000 (Air Bags) but manufacturer was not notified by owner.

Airbag warning light and system fault post-recall repair

After Recall 15S22 airbag repair was completed at dealer, airbag warning light illuminated on dashboard for the first time. Dealer and Ford field service identified the issue as requiring fuse removal to de-power and reset system, but standard troubleshooting (battery disconnect) did not resolve it. Underlying cause unclear—possibly switch, circuit, or sensor failure introduced during recall work.

When: February 2016; within days of completed recall repair

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light blinking initially, then staying continuously illuminated; Light did not appear before repair; No functional airbag deployment issue confirmed, but light indicates system fault

Codes mentioned: 15S22

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer quoted $253.99 to diagnose and resolve warning light. Customer refused out-of-pocket cost after failed initial troubleshooting. Left with unresolved warning light.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Ford field agent acknowledged this was not first occurrence of warning light after 15S22 repair. Suggested fuse reset procedure; no permanent solution provided or warranty coverage offered by Ford for the new fault.

Clockspring failure – airbag sensor circuit

At 200k miles, airbag warning light illuminated with blinking diagnostic code pointing to bad clockspring connection. Cruise control and horn inoperable as secondary indicators of clockspring failure. Ford part 1L5Z-14A664-AB required but has been unavailable for 6+ months.

When: 200,000 miles; part unavailable for at least 6 months at time of complaint

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminated with clockspring fault code; Cruise control inoperable; Horn inoperable

Repairs/costs cited: Ford part number 1L5Z-14A664-AB is replacement clockspring. Dealer cannot provide estimated arrival date. Part exhausted at dealers due to recall retrofit work.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No information provided. Dealer unable to offer timeline for part availability.

Airbag improper seating and installation defect

During recall repair for airbag replacement, service technician did not properly seat the passenger-side airbag module. Service manager attempted to adjust and tighten it but safety integrity of the installation remained uncertain. Owner had to request reinspection after discovering improper seating.

When: At time of recall repair; approximately 228,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger-side airbag not seated correctly in module; Risk of airbag malfunction or improper deployment due to loose installation

Codes mentioned: 23V125000

Repairs/costs cited: Service manager attempted to re-seat and tighten airbag. Vehicle released but with owner concern about safety of repair quality.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer was notified of the improper installation issue.

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2005 Ford Ranger?

It's a meaningful issue. 130 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 25 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 55,000 and 140,000 miles, with the median around 87,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 55,000; a quarter make it past 140,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
