Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report a Takata passenger-side airbag recall (16V384000 and related campaigns) initiated in July 2016 that has dragged on for years without repair. Replacement parts remain unavailable across dealerships nationwide, leaving owners unable to use the front passenger seat and frustrated by repeated delays. Ford initially sent recall letters stating parts would arrive "shortly" or by specific dates (June, July, October, spring 2018), but those commitments were not met. Subsequent letters told owners "do not allow anyone" in the passenger seat due to rupture risk, while offering no alternative transportation or timeline. Some owners report calling dealerships multiple times over 18+ months, only to be told parts may never arrive. Dealers confirm they have no stock and no ETA from Ford. A few owners mention the airbag warning light illuminating intermittently, and one reports a vehicle crash at 27,129 miles where airbags failed to deploy, resulting in a fatality. One owner was told by a dealership that Ford would not cover replacement of a missing passenger airbag as a recall repair. Owners also report receiving notices of Takata's bankruptcy filing, adding to uncertainty. The core complaint is that owners have been told for years parts are coming but never actually repair the vehicle, leaving them with a vehicle that cannot legally be used as designed and cannot be safely sold to others.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata passenger-side airbag recall—parts unavailable for extended periods

Passenger-side frontal airbag inflator subject to recall (campaigns 16V384000, 17V024000, 21V158000, and others). Ford issued recall letters starting July 2016 promising parts would become available, but as of multiple dates reported by owners (2017, 2018, and later), parts remain unavailable at dealerships nationwide. Owners unable to schedule repairs.

When: Recall initiated July 2016; reported ongoing through 2018 and beyond. Failures mileage at recall issuance and operation mileage not always specified.

Symptoms owners cite: Unable to use passenger seat due to recall restriction; Repeated promises of part availability that do not materialize; Airbag warning light illuminating intermittently (reported in some cases); Vehicle cannot be sold safely to third parties

Codes mentioned: NHTSA campaign 16V384000, NHTSA campaign 17V024000, NHTSA campaign 21V158000, Manufacturer recall 16S26, Manufacturer recall 17S01

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement passenger-side airbag inflator (part 18S02 referenced in one narrative). Replacement parts cited as unavailable; Takata bankruptcy filed, complicating supply chain. One owner reported dealership refusing to cover repair when airbag was already missing.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall; Takata Holdings (TK Holdings) filed for bankruptcy. Ford issued multiple recall notices with updated timelines (e.g., 'parts available by June,' 'parts available by spring 2018') that were not met. Ford customer service line stated no knowledge of when parts would arrive. One owner mentioned receiving a separate letter for 'voluntary research study' to replace driver airbag, but not the recalled passenger airbag. Dealership options include not deactivating the airbag and not providing loaner vehicles.

Airbag failure to deploy in crash event

One owner reported a rollover crash at 27,129 miles where airbags failed to deploy, resulting in driver fatality. This was a single incident; most other narratives do not report actual crash deployment failures.

When: Failure at 27,129 miles; updated reports in 2011

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags did not deploy during rollover crash; Driver fatality

Codes mentioned: Airbag deployment failure

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle destroyed; police report filed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer contacted, stated would send forms for completion. Dealer made note of incident.

"takata recall" for our Ford ranger has yet to be taken care of. The Ford dealerships do not have a date to replace the recalled airbags by takata. We were notified in july 2016 of the recall and have called the dealership many times and they still do not have a dtae when they will replace the vehicle air bag.

Takata recall. I was notified that the passenger side airbag had been recalled in early 2017 and to date (12-23-17) the Ford dealerships have been unable to replace the potentially defective part because they do not have replacement parts and do not know when they will get them.

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2008 Ford Ranger?

It's a serious issue. 292 complaints have been filed, including 7 reports involving a crash and 1 fatality(ies). We've classified it as critical based on NHTSA's reported outcomes.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 44 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 47,000 and 100,000 miles, with the median around 78,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 47,000; a quarter make it past 100,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
