When does it fail?
Of the 18 airbags complaints filed for the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta, here's the actual mileage breakdown — failures cluster heaviest at 150,000+ mi.
Each bar shows the share of total complaints filed at that mileage range. Peak failure window highlighted. Some owners report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 miles symptom-free. Maintenance habits and driving conditions shift the curve as much as mileage alone.
No new NHTSA airbags complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 8 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
Owners report two distinct problem categories. First, electrical faults: airbag warning lights come on repeatedly, often traced to burned-out seat belt buckle circuits or damaged wires under the seats. One owner had the same wiring harness recall work done in 2013, only to have the airbag light return in 2014. Dealers diagnose these issues but say repairs cost $300 per seat and typically fail within a month.
Second, and more serious, are deployment failures and false deployments. Three owners describe being in collisions at 40–45 mph where no airbags deployed at all—one occupant suffered a month-long hospitalization with brain trauma. Conversely, other owners report spontaneous deployment during routine driving: one at 30 mph with no impact, another during a left turn, both causing loss of vehicle control and secondary crashes. One owner's daughter hit a Volvo and neither airbag deployed; she spent a month hospitalized with brain trauma and over $100,000 in medical bills.
Owners mention searching online and finding what they believe are thousands of reports of identical problems on 2005 Jettas, yet say no recall exists. VW customer service reportedly dismissed concerns for out-of-warranty vehicles.

Failure modes owners describe
Airbag warning light on (electrical fault indicator)
Airbag fault light illuminates on dashboard, indicating an electrical or sensor issue within the airbag system. Occurs repeatedly in some vehicles and persists even after dealer service attempts.
When: Various mileage; one owner at 58,000 miles, another case at 69,000 miles; recurring episodes reported over years of ownership
Symptoms owners cite: Airbag fault light comes on and stays on after startup; Warning chime/noise accompanies light illumination; Light recurs after dealer repair attempts
Repairs/costs cited: Dealers variously diagnose as burned-out seat belt buckle inner electrical circuits, damaged/shorting wires under seats, or seat wiring harness failure. Owner reports cost of approximately $97.50 diagnostic fee plus repair charges; one owner cites $300 per seat for connector work.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: One owner reports 2013 recall notice for driver's seat wiring harness repair; however, airbag light reappeared post-repair in 2014. VW customer service reportedly dismissed concerns citing out-of-warranty status.
Spontaneous airbag deployment while driving
Driver-side or both front airbags deploy during normal driving with no collision, impact, or accident trigger. Owner loses control of vehicle, resulting in secondary crashes or damage.
When: Unspecified mileage; one incident at approximately 30 mph
Symptoms owners cite: Airbags deploy without impact or accident; Seatbelt retracts with extreme force, restricting breathing; Vehicle stalls simultaneously with deployment; Driver loses steering control and vehicle hits curb or goes off-road
Repairs/costs cited: VW denied responsibility for airbag repair, headliner damage, driver seat damage, and nonfunctional seatbelt following deployment.
Airbag system failure to deploy in collision
Airbag system completely fails to deploy during front-end or multi-impact collisions at highway or significant speeds. Results in serious injury to occupants who expected airbag protection.
When: At 69,000 miles (one case); unspecified mileage for other cases
Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment during 40-45 mph frontal collision; No airbag deployment during multiple guard rail impacts; Occupants experience severe head trauma, brain injury, facial lacerations, and loss of consciousness
Defective seat electrical connectors
Electrical connections under driver and passenger seats are defective and break from normal seat movement, causing intermittent airbag faults and disabling the airbag system entirely. Defect repeats after repair.
When: Throughout ownership; one owner reports repairs needed every approximately 1 month
Symptoms owners cite: Airbag fault code appears after seat movement; Airbag system non-functional for affected seat position; Fault code blocks other airbags from functioning
Repairs/costs cited: Dealer repair cost approximately $300 per seat; owner reports fix lasts only about 1 month before recurring.
Airbag deployment during steering maneuvers
Airbags deploy during routine turning maneuvers with no collision or impact. Deployment causes loss of vehicle control and secondary accident damage.
When: During left-hand turn; unspecified mileage
Symptoms owners cite: Airbags deploy during normal left turn; Hands thrown off steering wheel from deployment force; Vehicle loses control and hits curb; Entire passenger side damaged; vehicle not drivable

What owners are reporting 2 most recent
My airbag light is on and it never goes off when I first start it it has a warning noise and says airbag fault then the light stays on the car also when driving it sometimes gets stuck in the RPM window between the 2 and the 3 and it wont want to get unstuck you have to take your foot completely off then place back on the pedal and then it jerks away
Air bag light on in vehicle indicating an error with the system. Manual says the bag may not deploy or deploy while driving. This is a major safety concern I think the car company should address. *tr
Common questions
How serious is the airbags problem on the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta?
It's a meaningful issue. 18 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.
At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?
Across the 14 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 50,000 and 101,900 miles, with the median around 82,200. A quarter of owners report trouble before 50,000; a quarter make it past 101,900. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to airbags?
No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
