Complaint filed regarding a personally owned 2006 Ford expedition xlt, owned from 2/2010 to present (12/2010)> three separate instances when driving the vehicle when the "failsafe mode" warning lights and all loss of vehicle control:steering, brakes, acceleration, etc. Occurred/ randomly during this period of ownership with no apparent reason. Vehicle restarted immediately. All instances of the condition occurred when outside temperature was below freezing (winter months) into a right or left turn. No evidence of loss of antifreeze, engine overheating, coolant leaks, etc. Mechanic assessment could not find a reason for the engine fail safe activation. This is a significant, potential safety problem for the driver/passengers of 2006 Ford expeditions experiencing the random occurring engine

My truck went into fail safe mode while on the highway. This causes the truck to stop suddenly with no power to accelerate but the engine still runs. This caused me to almost be crushed by a tractor trailer behind me. I had several children in the car too!! *tr

12/15/2007 18,000 mi ODI #10211999.0

I purchased a 2006 Ford expedition in april of '06, beginning in november of '06 my engine began stalling. The consequences included loss of braking power, freezing of steering, vehicle slowing with no control. I brought this to my dealers attention on numerous occasions as the problem has continued throughout 2007. I am very concerned of the potential for accidents and injuries. *tr

2006 Ford expedition, "engine fail safe mode" car has shut off while driving 5 times in the last 6 months. The only way to get the car moving is to start it again. Extremely unsafe. This vehicle was covered under an extended warranty and has gone in for service to correct the problem. Ford cannot identify the problem! Comes up with "no code". I'm now off warranty and stuck with a very unsafe vehicle! Ford needs to address this problem immediately! *tr

ABS, roll stability control and general brake system lights came on at time of delivery of new car. Dealer "fixed" problem. Same symptoms occurred approximately 50 miles after taking delivery of car. Dealer techs. Cannot provide information if it is faulty sensor or if there is, in fact a fault in the braking system. Brakes seem to work, but am unwilling to test ABS/rsc features with known problem with system. *nm

On a 2006 expedition, upon start up (not every time) there is a noise that I describe as windshield wipers dragging across a dry window or a winding sound that also sounds like the motor of the windshield wipers. It seems to make this noise after the vehicle has sat for a period of time, usually after a day at work. But it has made this noise first thing in the morning after sitting all night. It has never done it on a second immediate start up. Ford has replaced the starter, no help. Ford has replaced the spark plugs (this was a 2005 recall I was told), no help and they have replaced the oil filter, again no help. Unfortunately no-one at Ford has heard this noise, but one tech seemed to know about it from another customer with the same issue. I have made suggestions to the Ford te

Engine frequently goes in to engine failsafe mode. This happens typically when the car is being lightly throttled such as around corners or in rush hour traffic. The car restarts fine, but must be completely turned off, which disables airbags, makes power steering and power brakes impossible to use. Previously I have cleaned the throttle body of the car at the suggestion of numerous mechanics, and this resolved the issue for nearly a year. Now the problem is back again. I'm concerned for my wife's safety. The throttle body needs to be redesigned as the throttle plate sticking returning invalid data to the computer sending the engine into failsafe mode. *js

Twice in last week, driving at slow speed and "engine fail safe mode" light comes on. Lost power, braking, and steering. Forced to put car in neutral while car was rolling to restart. Rolled right thru stop sign. Restarted fine, luckily. In second event, almost got hit when turning left across oncoming traffic! Started turn and couldn't stop turn due to loss of braking. Fortunately, first time I tried the restart in neutral and it worked, otherwise I would have been hit in second event or hit something since I couldn't steer. *tr

As I am driving down the road I lose power and deaccelerate and go into fail safe mode. The little wrench light comes on the dash. Then the engine cuts off completely. This has happened at multiple speeds. It is extremely dangerous! Once I turn the key off I restart the engine and it may not happen again for a month. I replaced the throttle position sensor and it did not do this for about a year, now it is starting again and it has happened 5 times in the last 3 months. It has happened at 65mph, 40mph, 25mph, 55mph, 30 MPH. There is no pattern. I have been lucky that I have been able to pull over to the side of the road or turn into a parking lot each time this happens, it scares me! I have read multiple accounts of this happening online to the 2006 and wonder why it has not been recalled

Thankfully no crash has happened yet. However, my complaint deals with my 2006 limited Ford expedition. In the back where the third row seats are located, there is no possible way for those passengers to escape in the event of a crash. The back window does not have a switch/release to open any windows. The door does not have any type of device to open the tail gate. *tr

While driving yesterday i heard a pop. The 4th coil pack literally blew out from its spot. I have now had 3 coil packs blow out at random causing the holes that the bolt straps the coil pack to the spark plug to strip out. I have a transmission leak that will not stop and I've taken it in multiple times for repairs and it still is leaking. Since getting this vehicle i noticed at the electrical issue where everything including my headlights will shut off and then pop back on while I'm driving. My seat belt will not open so i can buckle and I'm now getting frustrated because I've spent a lot of money on this only to realize has had the same issue with previous owners and they for some reason were too embarrassed to report it but I'm not and I'm sick of dumping money into this damb thing!
