When I was driving, suddenly there is a warning sound and the dash shows the words 'power steering'. I lose the power steering at that moment. I also found that if I stop the car and restart, I get the power steering back, however it might not last long.

Power steering going out on the highway. Pulling off road and restarting car temporarily fixes issue. Can drive around town for 45 min attempting to see if it would happen again- it didnt happen again until I was on the highway two days later.
Cars power steering goes out while driving and comes back when I turn it off and back on again.
This happened when I first bought the car, we could not get the key out of ignition and it would not stay park. So I called dealer and got nowhere, I even made a complaint on here I believe stating someone is going to get hurt. Still to this day I can put the car in and out of gear without having to apply the brake!!! Gm has known about this for a long time and there should be a recall. My car didn't have a warranty when I purchased it so they are no help. So I was able to take the shifter console apart and see what was happening, I got my key out and put it together and it did it again and again and again. We have just learned how to manipulate the car so we can drive it. *tr
Power steering assist motor stopped working and the dic showed "power steering". Engine was stopped and restarted to resolve the issue. The issue appears to happen at random speeds and at random intervals, and once the dic warning is showing steering is extremely difficult. The issue has occurred at least a dozen times in the last ~2 weeks. *tr

It would be easier to list the things that are ok with this car. I've resurfaced or replaced the rotors several times (four times in one year) after consistently complaining to the dealer that it sounded like things were falling off the car. The car's braking and steering capacity is extremely diminished. I've replaced a broken stabilizer control arm and now I'm told the front end needs to be rebuilt. This damage is a direct result of the continuing problem with the rotor warping. The check engine light is on more than off and its been in at least 10 times for this issue. Gm customer service is aware of these issues and refuses to return customer calls. *ln updated 11/29/11. *jb updated 12/06/11. *jb
With no advance warning while driving the power steering will stop operating and the car must be steered manually. I never know when this may happen and sometimes it will happen many times in one day and other times we may drive several days without any issues. This is an extremely dangerous situation when traveling on a 2-lane roadway for myself but even more so for my wife. There are known issues by both the NHTSA and general motors yet no help is available to correct the manufacturer defect.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet hhr. While the vehicle was parked the contact attempted to open the drivers side door and the latch broke off. The front passengers side door latch broke on another occasion. The contact stated that in order to get out of the vehicle the doors must be opened from the outside. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be repaired. The vehicle will be taken into the dealer at a later time. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
I am an owner of 2007 hhr with 51,000 miles. I locked my car went into the store came out and the driver side door would not open. The remote button would work the lock up and down button but still the door would not open from the outside handle. I then put the key in the door and still it would not open. The lock flips up and down with the key and the remote but the door handle will not open the door. The handle is not broken. So I entered the car by the passenger side door, crawled over the seat and shift level to get behind the wheel to drive home. After arriving home I could not get out of my drivers side door. It would not open from the inside, so I had to crawl over the shift and seat to the passenger side to exit the vehicle. I have a torn muscle in my arm so it hurt to do all this.
My hhr was bought used at a gm dealer, it has 63000 miles on it and the fuel lines leak badly!! There should be a recal on the premature rusting of the lines.

The interior door handle on the front passenger door has been making a "click" noise and difficult to open. Today a passenger tried to get out and the handle refused to open. Door was able to open from outside. A door that does not properly open could pose a safety hazard should someone be trapped in the vehicle. *tr
