Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering body on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2008 CTS shows a pattern of water infiltration that ranges from persistent to catastrophic. Multiple owners describe wet floorboards, water dripping from ceilings, and trunk areas that soak up water during rain exposure, leading to mold accumulation. One owner documented four dealership repair attempts over two years, with the dealership admitting they could not fix the problem and only offering a trade-in that required additional payment. A separate complaint pins the problem to the moonroof, which leaks directly into the cabin and allows water to pool in the trunk.

Door latch problems surface repeatedly. Owners report front doors, especially the right side, becoming progressively harder to open from the outside latch, sometimes failing entirely—forcing entry from the opposite side. One rear passenger door was documented opening on its own while the vehicle was in motion. Both conditions were diagnosed as requiring door assembly replacement but left unrepaired.

Additional structural and design issues compound the safety concerns. Two owners flag the gas pedal's proximity to the brake pedal as hazardous, with one linking it to an accident. One trunk lid will not open via remote, driver door release, or emergency handle. Finally, an owner notes that the A-pillar and side mirror design create a blind spot that obscures pedestrians in crosswalks during turns.

Failure modes owners describe

Water leaks into cabin and trunk

Multiple owners report persistent water intrusion into the cabin (floorboards, ceiling) and trunk area. One owner reports the vehicle soaking with water after overnight rain exposure, leading to mold buildup. Dealership attempts to repair have failed in at least one case despite four service visits and specialist consultation.

When: 12/10/08 documented; affects vehicles at various mileages

Symptoms owners cite: Wet floorboards; Water dripping from ceiling; Water pooling in trunk; Mold growth inside vehicle; Vehicle soaks with water in rain

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership replaced several parts and consulted specialists but was unable to resolve the issue in at least one case

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer offered trade-in option with additional out-of-pocket payment required from owner

Moonroof water leak

Moonroof leaks water directly into the cabin and allows water to accumulate in the trunk area, causing excessive mold buildup when vehicle is exposed to rain overnight.

When: Not specified

Symptoms owners cite: Water leaking from moonroof into cab; Water holding in trunk door area; Mold accumulation

Front door latch failure

Front doors, especially the right front, become progressively harder to open from the exterior latch over time. In some cases, the exterior latch will not open the door at all, forcing the driver to enter from the opposite side and open the door from inside. Owners identify this as a safety hazard in accident or fire scenarios.

When: Develops over time; noted at various mileages between 80,000 and 105,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Front door difficult to open from outside; Exterior latch fails to open door; Right front door most affected; Requires opening door from inside

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer quoted $1,800 for repair

Rear passenger door unlatches while vehicle in motion

Rear passenger door unlatches and opens independently while the vehicle is being driven. Dealer diagnosed that the door assembly needs replacement.

When: At 80,000 miles; current mileage was 105,000

Symptoms owners cite: Door unlatches independently while driving; Door opens while in motion

Repairs/costs cited: Door assembly replacement required per dealer diagnosis; vehicle not repaired

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer made aware of failure

Gas pedal positioned too close to brake pedal

The gas and brake pedals are positioned so close together that a driver can depress both pedals simultaneously with a single foot motion. One owner reported this spacing caused an accident; multiple owners experienced the hazard on several occasions without accidents.

When: Not specified

Symptoms owners cite: Can hit both pedals at same time; Accidental dual pedal depression while driving

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM refused to address the issue and refused to provide written documentation of refusal

Trunk lid latch failure

Trunk lid will not open using the remote device or the driver's door trunk release button. The latch engages but does not release. The emergency trunk release handle accessible via the rear seat pass-through also fails to open the trunk.

When: Not specified

Symptoms owners cite: Trunk will not open via remote; Trunk will not open via driver door release; Latch engages but does not release; Emergency release handle ineffective

Blind spot from A-pillar and side mirror design

The placement and size of the side mirrors combined with the A-pillar design create a significant blind spot. Owners report difficulty seeing pedestrians in crosswalks when attempting to turn, creating a visibility hazard.

When: Not specified

Symptoms owners cite: Blind spot in side mirror view; A-pillar obstructs visibility; Difficulty seeing crosswalk pedestrians

Abnormal noise from front and rear

Abnormal noise reported coming from both the front and rear of the vehicle while driving. Vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired, and manufacturer was not notified.

When: At approximately 100,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Abnormal noise from front; Abnormal noise from rear; Noise present at 60 mph

Common questions

How serious is the body problem on the 2008 Cadillac CTS?

It's a meaningful issue. 12 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,500.

At what mileage does the body typically fail?

Across the 8 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most body failures cluster between 21,374 and 150,000 miles, with the median around 80,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 21,374; a quarter make it past 150,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,500 for body repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to body?

No active recalls currently cover body issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
