Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
Owners report two distinct patterns of airbag failure. First, airbags have failed to deploy in documented accidents—head-on collisions at 20 mph, side impacts at 45 mph, and rear-end crashes at 65 mph—resulting in injuries including spinal fractures, head trauma, and broken bones. One owner suffered a crushed spine during a four-time rollover when all six airbags did not deploy. Conversely, the driver-side and passenger-side front airbags on one PT Cruiser deployed spontaneously without any accident or impact while the vehicle was moving slowly (5 mph pulling into a parking space, then 35 mph on a roadway). Chrysler investigated that incident, found no damage, and denied manufacturing responsibility while refusing to release the inspection report.
A widespread sensor and wiring defect also plagues multiple units. The passenger airbag off indicator fails to illuminate when the seat is empty (as designed), while the problem warning light and chime activate constantly regardless of occupancy. Diagnostic codes B1B57, B1B55, B1B56, and B1B54 were recorded, pointing to seat-belt receiver and occupant-detection wiring issues. One dealer attempted repair by ordering a seatbelt receiver replacement, but the part was on national backorder with no availability estimate, leaving owners without a functional fix. Owners report this malfunction appears common across the model generation and note it on internet forums.

Failure modes owners describe
Spontaneous airbag deployment
Driver and passenger front airbags deployed without collision or impact while vehicle was moving at low speed (5 mph) and moderate speed (35 mph). No accident history, impact, or damage to vehicle. Chrysler investigated and denied manufacturing responsibility without releasing inspection details.
When: At 10:15 AM on 8/14/2014; vehicle delivered in 2008 with no accident history
Symptoms owners cite: Driver side airbag deployed while pulling into parking space at <5 mph; Passenger side airbag deployed 30 minutes later while traveling 35 mph; No collision or impact involved
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle inspected by third-party contractor on 8/19/2014; no damage found; airbags not repaired. Owner forced to drive without functional airbags.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Chrysler inspection conducted 8/19/2014; letter dated 8/25/2014 stated incident not due to manufacturing responsibility; inspection report denied to owner claiming confidential/proprietary status
Airbags failed to deploy in rollover accident
Six airbags did not deploy during 4-time rollover crash. Seatbelt malfunction allowed driver's body to rotate and crush spine against steering wheel. Owner sustained fractured vertebra (T11) requiring surgical fusion and titanium reinforcement.
When: April 8th (year not specified but complaint recent); approximately 1 mile from home
Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment despite severe 4-time rollover; Seatbelt lengthened during rollover, allowing body rotation; Driver's spine crushed against steering wheel; Fractured T11 vertebra
Repairs/costs cited: Vertebral fusion T10-T11-T12 with titanium rods and screws and donor bone packing
Airbags failed to deploy in frontal collisions
Multiple reports of airbags failing to deploy in head-on and side-impact crashes at impact speeds ranging 20–65 mph. Injuries sustained include head trauma, back/neck/arm injuries, spinal fractures, and whiplash. Vehicles destroyed in crashes.
When: Various incidents; mileages 99,833 and 172,000 documented
Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment in head-on collision at 20 mph; No airbag deployment in side-impact at 45 mph with tree impact; No airbag deployment in 65 mph rear-end collision with 18-wheeler; No driver-side airbag deployment in head-on collision; Head injuries, back pain, neck/arm injuries, whiplash
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicles towed; one deemed destroyed; ambulance transport for serious injuries in 65 mph crash
Airbag warning light and sensor malfunction
Passenger airbag off indicator fails to illuminate when seat unoccupied (should light when under 30 lbs detected). Airbag warning light comes on and chimes constantly with no occupant; light behavior erratic and unpredictable. Diagnostic codes set indicating SRS capability uncertain. Reported as widespread problem across multiple owner forums.
When: Various mileages: 36,000; 43,000; 52,000 reported
Symptoms owners cite: Airbag off light never illuminates when seat unoccupied; Airbag problem light comes on and dings constantly; Light and chime activate/deactivate erratically regardless of seat occupancy; Warning light remains on with or without passenger present
Codes mentioned: B1B57, B1B55, B1B56, B1B54
Repairs/costs cited: Seat belt receiver (buckle) replacement attempted; part on national backorder with no ETA; problem unresolved despite dealer work
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Lithia Dodge Chrysler Jeep service confirmed WiTech diagnostic codes and ordered passenger seatbelt receiver replacement
Airbag horn assembly sticking
Horn engaged through airbag assembly remained activated and would not disengage until much later. Failure was recurring. Dealer replaced airbag horn assembly but problem persisted.
When: Between 36,000 and 52,000 miles
Symptoms owners cite: Horn remained activated when engaged; Horn did not disengage promptly; Recurring failure
Repairs/costs cited: Airbag horn assembly replaced by dealer; failure recurred and vehicle not further repaired
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer made aware of failure
Airbag deployment on engine start
Airbags deployed while vehicle was parked and starting engine. Airbag warning indicator illuminated before deployment.
When: At 15,770 miles
Symptoms owners cite: Airbags deployed during engine start while parked; Warning indicator illuminated prior to deployment
Partial or asymmetric airbag deployment
During impact with road debris, only driver-side airbag deployed; passenger side did not. Takata recall mentioned by owner.
When: Vehicle in motion on highway
Symptoms owners cite: Only driver-side airbag deployed upon striking object in road; Passenger-side airbag failed to deploy
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall (referenced by owner)

Passenger seat airbag light remains off when unoccupied, goes on and chimes when someone is seated. Horn sticks. Overheats when idled short periods (traffic lights, etc.) blows cold air when at idle, only provides heat when rolling. All these problems are common to this vehicle.
Passenger sat in seat driving less then mile airbag light comes on once passenger gets out seat light goes off. *tr
The airbag sign for passenger 2 turns on after a while of driving, speeding problem when when trying to accelerate the car takes forever to speed up
At 10:15am on thursday, 8/14/2014, the driver side front airbag spontaneously deployed while I was traveling <5mph pulling into a parking space. The vehicle has never been in any kind of accident nor has sustained any other damage, including from potholes (my family took original delivery of the vehicle in 2008). The local Chrysler dealership declined to look at the vehicle, and instead provided…
Passenger airbag lite and sensor goes off with no one sitting in seat and if someone is in seat it goes off. It seams as if there is a short in a wire. Others I have read after have had this same problem.
Common questions
How serious is the airbags problem on the 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
It's a meaningful issue. 20 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.
At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?
Across the 15 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 43,000 and 99,833 miles, with the median around 68,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 43,000; a quarter make it past 99,833. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to airbags?
No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
