Lost power steering as I was driving through a parking lot. Saw the message on the dash "power steering assist fault". Called Ford dealership to get my vehicle looked at but they are booked 2 weeks full. Asked about recall 14s05 but they told me my VIN was not part of the recall. I contacted Ford and they gave me the same information. Can not drive vehicle as it is too dangerous in winter. This issue seems to be very common with the 2008 mercury mariner and especially ones that were not part of the recall for the same exact issue.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at 55 -60 MPH, the power steering failed. The steering wheel became increasingly difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was turned off while the contact inspected the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted but a short distance afterwards the failure reoccurred. No warning lights illuminated. The contact called the dealer who informed them the vehicle was included in a recall for the vehicle, NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering), approximately 10 years ago, which had a software update as the remedy. The dealer confirmed the remedy had already been completed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 220.000.
Power steering intermittently goes out like thousands of others escapes and mariners. This happens randomly.
My car is well maintained. I do everything to keep it running well and now the power steering only works half the time. It is now also making a clunking noise in the steering wheel column and the wheel will shake on its own while in park. I have read lots of complaints about this same problem on many I these vehicles and something needs to be done! $1300 is a ton of money to pay to have a "sensor" probably the size of a fuse replaced! And it's very scary when the power steering goes out while your doing 70 down the highway! *tr

My wife was driving the mariner, she stopped at the post office to ship a package. When she tried pulling away from the curve she couldn't turn the steering wheel. She called me told me what had happened , also saying the display on dashboard was on , a message that read electtric power assist failure, I arrived where she was and drove the mariner home. This happened on a friday night so had to wait until monday to call Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673 to see what could be done, after all this is a national recall.

Was traveling home for lunch, turning corner and vehicle suddenly went to idle. Pushed gas pedal and it went to the floorboard, but engine remained at idle. Was unable to accelerate at all. Was able to idle home blocking traffic as I went. Checked gas pedal and found that throttle cable had broken. The wire itself had broken. The rubber grommet and crimped end remained in-tacked. This could have been very dangerous if for instance I had been pulling onto freeway or crossing a busy intersection, or in heavy traffic. I believe this part should be inspected on all vehicles of this year and make. This type of breakage could cause an accident and possibly a fatality. *tr

Traveling at 35 MPH and up , sometimes the vehicle would shutter and shake. Found a broken ring on the axle caused this problem. Took a few visits to the dealer to find it. It is very scary when it happens and you must pull over and shut the car off. Sometimes it would be weeks before it happened . Also, happened on the highway. This should have been covered under a safety recall. I had to pay for this repair. *tr

Hybrid version of 2008 mercury mariner SUV intermittent illumination of (2) dashboard warning lamps: multiple appearances of "yellow wrench" symbol @ l/edge instrument panel - manual vague, Ford svc writer says lamp indicates fault detected in electronically-controlled CVT (continuously variable transmission); clears with shut-down/restart. Today (12-24-08), the red triangle warning @ right edge of inst panel came on after cold-start & driving <100 feet - accompanied by info text warning to `make immediate safe stop'.
