Power steering stopped working while driving on a city street and then power steering came back. When I shut off the vehicle and restarted it, the power steering is still not working. I have not driven the car since because of safety concerns. I was told by Ford that my escape was not part of the national recall.
Purchased the vehicle in january 2017. Approximately mid december 2018 a code popped up on my dash "power steering assist fault" and the steering wheel shakes as I drive. I code is continuously on. I contacted Ford, who tell me there was a recall on the 2009 Ford escape in 2016 for this exact code, but because my vehicle was not assembled in kansas city, that they cannot fix it under the recall and I would have to pay for it out of pocket. I don't feel this is right, as this is a safety issue and could be dangerous if I lose my power steering while on the road. *tt*jb
The steering wheel locks up and I am unable to start the car. Sometimes the ignition will turn and the car will start, but the wheel remains locked up. Eventually the car may start and the wheel will unlock, but I'm afraid it could go out while driving. I have discovered over 650 complaints about the same problem with Fords. I took the car to a mechanic (independent) who diagnosed a defective ignition module and steering column. We ordered the parts and 4 weeks later when they still hadn't arrived (there are no 2009 steering columns out there) I had the car towed to the Ford dealer. They replaced the ignition key cylinder, charged me $550 and said the car was fine. We jumped in the car to drive home and the wheel was again locked. The mechanic came out and told me they would further diagn
First noticed steering wheel shaking and a noise.soon after power assist fault sensor came on.next steering wheel was so tight could not turn it.I was driving when power assist sensor came on.then I was sitting in my driveway trying to pull out when steering wheel got tight
Driving down the road, I was trying to det over when all of a sudden the steering acted like it was locked up and very difficult to turn. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off and then turned it back on. The problem quit. This is the 4th time that this has happened and is very scary. *tr
Safety issue: my 2009 Ford escape's steering wheel began to shudder/vibrate at idle. In addition, when the vehicle is started, the steering wheel cannot be moved left or right. It locks up. I have to shut the vehicle off and re-start it in order to get the steering wheel to move. Today, I was driving down the road at approximately 45 MPH and the steering wheel completely locked up. I could hardly control the vehicle, but was fortunate enough to get it to the side of the road. This could have been disastrous. I had to shut the vehicle off again and turn it back on in order to proceed. This vehicle only has 57,000 miles on it. It has had the regularly scheduled maintenance on it since I purchased it new in jan 2009. I am extremely concerned about this being a safety issue. I have
I was driving on a city street, I turned left at a light as I should, the power steering went completely out with no warning, absolutely no power steering as I was turning through the intersection . I was going much slower than 25 MPH speed limit, since I was turning. I almost crashed into a curb\street sign, but was able to turn the wheel with all my strength to make it turn without the power steering. I always take care of my vehicle, this should never have happened. There was absolutely no warning, I'm lucky I wasn't on the highway or got into an accident. This should be covered under a safety recall. I expect an immediate solution.
Very scary moment. Turning left with on coming traffic and lost all power stirring. Was nearly hit. This escape had been taken to the dear in december of 2014 under a recall. The pscm and the icm were updated as per the Ford 14s05c recall number. I could have been hurt or worse, the family in the car that nearly missed me. I have been reading online about the overwhelming amount of people this is happening to. It is wrong and Ford motor company needs to take responsibility for a faulty component on these vehicles. Ford is aware of this situation and thus far refusing to make it right. I am in the process of obtaining quotes for repairs.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 Ford escape. While driving 35 MPH, the steering failed and the power steering assist pump sensor illuminated. In addition, the steering wheel shook vigorously. The dealer could not diagnose the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,000.
I was driving down the freeway from albuquerque to las cruces when my steering became almost impossible to turn the wheel. I quickly pulled off the freeway and called my boyfriend to ask him what to do. He said restart your car see if that resets it. It did work. Then later I parked and the steering wheel just started shaking vigorously. This has happened six more times since then ranging from speeds of 20 to 75 miles and hour. I have read online about this problem and it seems to me to be a very unsafe thing to have happen while driving at high speeds on the freeway. Very scary when all of a sudden you can't steer or its very hard to steer. I also don't understand why Ford would replace the whole steering column versus just the sensor. If I would have been in a big turn and it had stopped
As I was driving down the road, I applied my brakes and prepared to take a right hand turn into a business parking lot. As I performed the turn, the dashboard message center displayed "power steering assist fault" and the vehicle became extremely difficult to turn/steer. A vehicle was waiting to leave the parking lot I was entering. Due to the power steering failing, I almost collided with the other vehicle.
I purchased a 2009 escape new. The vehicle now has 142,00 miles and is having an issue. My wife called me on december 24 2013 and said that the car was hard to steer. She said that earlier in the day she was turning into an entrance to a gas station and misjudged where the ramp was and the curb and hoped the curb with drivers side front tire. She said she heard a loud noise and continued to drive into the station to get gas. I told her the noise was most likely the strut bottoming out. I asked her how was the steering after that she said it was fine. This took place in the am. She called me around 5 pm. And said the car was hard to steer again I told her to turn the car off take out the key and open the door and then close the door and restart the car as this would rest all the electronic
I brought my 2009 Escape in for a steering recall. When Hopkins Ford checked for codes, they said there were none. They then performed a reset on the electric steering. After they performed the reset, my steering went out. I brought it back to have it checked again then they said now there is a code. They are now claiming they are not responsible for the code repair (Steering column) because in their eyes, they reset the recall. I have been in contact with Ford customer service and they said there is nothing they can do because they closed the case when they reprogrammed the recall. There were no issues prior, or codes prior to them reprogramming the steering. They now are trying to tell me it will cost me $1700 to repair an issue that is part of a recall.
Power steering failure occurred without warning making it difficult to control the vehicle and potentially dangerous for both myself and others on the road.

The front sub frame rusted out on the passenger side. The is a 1inch by 5 inch hole in the sub frame. The lower control arm could have come off and the whole spindle and tire could have come off the vehicle while driving. Haggerty Ford iin West Chicago, Il noticed the large hole while doing an inspection for an oil change.
seatbelts 1 complaint shown
Passenger seat belt locked arbitrarily. The only way to release seat belt was to unbuckle and allow seat belt to fully retract. Took vehicle to dealership on (3) occasions to have seat belt replaced, problem continued. Took vehicle to 3rd party and had seat belt replaced and problem is now resolved. Original seat belt was defective and in the case of an accident, persons sitting in the passenger seat would have been injured or killed. Ford refused to honor factory warranty and repair problem. *tr
