What stands out
Electrical accounts for 33% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 5 categories tracked.
No new NHTSA electrical complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 6 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.
Chrysler is recalling 4,314 my 2009 Dodge journey, Jeep grand cherokee, commander and wrangler vehicles
In the event of a crash, the driver's airbag may not properly inflate and may not be able to properly protect an occupant, increasing the risk of injuries.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the driver's airbag squib wires and replace the steering column control module free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during may 2009. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented
repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall
(it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
Owners report five distinct electrical failure patterns in 2009 Jeep Commanders:
Ignition switch problems dominate the complaints. Keys get stuck and won't come out, won't turn fully to OFF, or remain in Accessory mode while parked. Several owners had ignition switches replaced at dealership—sometimes twice—without fixing the problem. One owner was quoted $700 for a WJM module replacement not covered under warranty. The vehicle sometimes continues running after the key is removed.
Stalling while driving occurs at various speeds, from low-speed turns to highway speeds. Some owners lose all electrical power—engine, lights, brakes—during the stall. The vehicle usually restarts normally. Dealerships have been unable to diagnose the root cause despite holding vehicles for days.
Starting failures show a pattern: vehicle clicks but won't crank, and jump-starting sometimes works. Dealers replaced starters without fixing the problem. One owner's alternator, battery, and starter all tested good at the shop yet the no-start persists.
Dashboard and infotainment failures include radio cycling on and off, display screens looping through graphics and black screens, clicking sounds from the dash, and loss of heated seats, rear sensors, interior lights, and anti-skid functions.
Airbag warning lights stay on with no accident history, and at least one mechanic stated the airbag won't deploy in a crash. Owners cite a faulty circuit board as the likely cause, and no recall covers their VINs.

Failure modes owners describe
Ignition switch malfunction
Key gets stuck in the ignition, won't turn fully off or into OFF position, remains in Accessory position, or key fob remains stuck. Some owners report the vehicle continues running after the key is removed.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 14V567000 (Electrical System) exists but vehicle VINs were not included; some owners mentioned unknown related recalls but their VINs excluded; manufacturer stated no recalls available
Stalling at speed or while driving
Vehicle stalls without warning while driving at various speeds—from low-speed turns to highway speeds—sometimes accompanied by loss of all electrical power including lights, engine, and brakes. Vehicle typically restarts normally.
When: 25,000 to 106,000 miles; occurs intermittently during driving
Symptoms owners cite: Stalling without warning while driving; Loss of all electrical power during stall; Lights flicker before or after stalls; Traction control light comes on; Vehicle restarts normally after stalling; Oil pressure light warning before stalling
Repairs/costs cited: Dealership unable to diagnose root cause; one owner had vehicle held for 4+ days without resolution; owner mentioned electrical issues 2 years prior
Starting issues and no-start condition

When: 100,784 miles and lower; occurs periodically and randomly
Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle fails to start; Clicking sound on start attempt; Intermittent starting; Vehicle stranded without power; All electrical systems (lights, horn, radio, windows) work, but engine won't turn over

Infotainment and dashboard electrical failures
Radio turns on and off repeatedly; dashboard display cycles through Jeep logo, time display, and black screen with clicking sounds. Multiple dashboard and interior electrical functions fail including autostart, heated seats, rear sensors, anti-skid, and dash lights.
When: Remote-start activation; random intervals; 60,000 miles or less
Symptoms owners cite: Radio cycles on and off repeatedly; Dashboard display cycles: black screen, Jeep logo, time bars, real time; Clicking sounds from display; Interior lights failure; Autostart malfunction; Heated seats not working; Rear sensors not working; Anti-skid system failure; Dashboard lights not working; Buttons on dash don't respond
Repairs/costs cited: One owner reports changing fan to cabin mode sometimes resolves clicking issue temporarily; mechanic diagnosed faulty board in another case
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Owner noted electrical system recall (KBB listed VIN as part of Powertrain Transfer Case recall) but NHTSA showed no unrepaired recalls on their vehicle
Airbag system failure
Airbag warning light illuminates and remains on. Mechanic diagnosed airbag will not deploy in event of accident despite no prior accident or deployment event.
When: 9 years old, under 60,000 miles
Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light on; Airbag will not deploy

My Jeep has periodic starting issues. All the lights work on the dash it just clicks. This is very random. If you jump it the vehicle will start. Sometimes if you wait a period of time it will start. Took it to the dealer they replaced starter but issue stills persist. It is very difficult to recreate. Dealers have no clue what is causing the issue.

The remote car starter starts my vehicle? But 5-10 seconds later it shuts back off and my radio turns itself on and off even while its not on. Common questions
How serious is the electrical problem on the 2009 Jeep Commander?
It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 19 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $850 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.
At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?
Across the 17 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most electrical failures cluster between 60,000 and 131,000 miles, with the median around 98,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 60,000; a quarter make it past 131,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to electrical?
Yes — 1 active recall(s) cover electrical issues on this vehicle. Recall fixes are always free regardless of mileage or warranty status. Use the VIN decoder at the top of the page to check if your specific vehicle is affected.
