Was out shopping at costco, came out of store and car would not start. Intelligent key indicator light was displaying on the dash. The brake pedal would not depress and push button would not start the car. Tried to manually override by inserting the key fob in the slot - still would not start. As I was stranded had to call husband to come get me. Had him bring other key fob, still would not work. Had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership as car is completely disabled and will not run. *tr

My car was running fine and received a warning light that the battery needed to be replaced in my intelligent key fob. Went to start car and it would not start and the warning light still appeared. We replaced battery in fob and still the car would not start. After talking with dealer we find that the steering lock mechanism going out was a very common problem and they had 5 incidents of it just this week. After doing more research and seeing how common the problem was we are wondering why this year make and model has not made the recall list yet. Problem cost between $600-$1000 to repair. *tr

On 12/28/2012 my 2009 Nissan altima displayed a yellow key warning indicator on my dash board. Thinking that it was my key battery, I had it changed and the light went away for 2 days. On sunday, 12/30/2012 it reappeared as I was driving to a christmas gathering. Afterwards I went to my car and tried to start it up. The yellow key warning still appeared on my dashboard but no other response was seen from my car. I had to have it towed to a dealership here in tulsa, ok to have diagnostics run and it shows that its the steering lock mechanism has malfunctioned. After researching this and finding that this has been a problem in other years of the Nissan altima, I find it unacceptable that this issue hasn't been addressed and the part hasn't been recalled. *tr

I went to start 2009 Nissan altima car would not start. It was not something simple as a battery or starter and there was no way to start the car. It completely locked up. We ended up having to have the car towed and discovered that the steering lock unit was broken. The repair shop did research and testing and found out that this is a known issue from Nissan with no recall. Nissan indicated that this was not a safety issue and therefore no recall was necessary. Our concern is that Nissan knowing that they have a defective part, where they know their cars will not start at any given time without warning and in fact may potentially place their consumers in an unsafe situation. Not to mention the cost of the repair is steep and it is a repair that the consumer is responsible for at no fault

Power steering lock, has broke again after being fixed just 50,000 miles before. It is time for a recall. This happened in situation where I could do nothing to fix it. Getting a tow and a bill of over 1000 is not my version of a good day. Recall!!

Nissan altima 2009 has a defective steering lock system. Suddenly this evening after work when I get back to the car, it just did not start. This is a dangerous situation if it would have happened any remote place and I would have been stranded. I see there have been several people complained about this on the internet but Nissan has not recalled this car. Please investigate and take appropriate steps. They should either replace the defective part of just replace the car.

Nissan altima 2009 parked on side of road in order to change drivers. The electronic steering column lock activated after the vehicle was turned off and the vehicle could not be restarted. This was an extremely dangerous and emotionally damaging experience. What should have been an easy routine change to an experienced driver in an unknown neighborhood resulted in passengers being stranded and requiring assistance to contact and wait for a tow-truck for an otherwise functioning vehicle. The vehicle was ultimately brought to Nissan for repairs (at the recommendation of Nissan consumer affairs) with estimated cost of $1290. Compared to the listed kbb price of the vehicle at $6442, the costs for repair is about 20% of the value of the vehicle. Nissan consumer affairs later informed us

The steering lock mechanism is defective the car shut off causing it to steer hard. Then car won't start. It costs $800+ to fix the car. It only has 70,000 miles on it.and at one time this part had a lifetime warranty on it then Nissan changed it to 6 years when they started to get complaints. Our car ran out of the warranty in july but we didn't receive a notification about it . Luckily we was able to bypass the steering lock. Someone needs to check Nissan altima's car accident deaths because this could cause a serious car wreck and I predict this has already happened. Nissan needs to recall this defective part.

Merry christmas Nissan! Thanks for making it a memorable one. I drove to a relatives home the day after christmas. The car was parked on a city street. When I went to leave, the car would not start or do anything. A yellow key symbol appeared. The car would not start, nothing was happening. The brake was very stiff. No ability to shift. No radio or dash lights would work. I had to have the vehicle towed to a local Nissan dealership. Electronic steering lock failure at a cost of $900.00. I was then told by Nissan dealership that Nissan was well aware of the issue and they had added an extended warranty to fix the bad part but it had expired earlier in 2015. I only went to dealership 3 times with sterring lock issues previously only to be told that it was my fob not the steering lock. I have

My wife and I purchased a 2009 Nissan altima in october 2009 and did not encounter any major issues until a few days ago. On 12/17/2015, my wife was left stranded in a parking lot outside a grocery store at night due to unable to start the car. We tried using a key fob with a good battery and jump starting the altima, but it would change the car from 'lock' mode to 'on' mode (where the car can be started). We did extensive research, and found there were a tremendous number of 2009 Nissan altima owners that had encountered the same issue, some stranded on the highway, and some in snow with kids. Many people post on blogs and youtube about this issue. We ended up having the car towed to a Nissan dealership for examination for $110, and their diagnosis result confirmed that the ste

On 12/26/15 I received a phone call from my mother stating that my 2009 Nissan altima would not start and the intelligent key icon appeared on the dashboard. After she replaced the battery in the key fob to still only find out that the car still wont start. I contacted my local Nissan dealership for them to tow my car to their location. Once my car was towed and they inspected my vehicle I was told that the problem was the steering unit control lock. After doing some research I found that this was a common problem for all 2009 Nissan altima and this particular part was replaced in all 2010 altima. Furthermore, there was an extended warranty issued for 8 years unlimited mileage which expired on 9/25/15 for 2009 Nissan altima for the same problem. So, when I asked the dealer about this they
