Steering/brake lock failed to disengage with attempted engine start up. Key indicator light and security lights flashing on dash. Steering lock required replacement after car was towed to nearest Nissan dealership. This repair was not covered under warranty which had expired 7 month earlier. On line research would suggest this is a fairly common occurrence; a Nissan service bulletin has apparently be published for this issue as it was referenced by the service department providing the repair. *tr

In august of 2014 I got in my car, 2009 Nissan maxima, started it. Memory is set for my drivers seat. Seat set as normal. Steering/tilt did not move as it is set to my position. Did not move in, out, up nor down tried to set it, did not work manually either. Took my car to dealer, they said the motor has gone out in steer/tilt and it will cost close to $500.00 to get fixed. *tr
Steering component - telescope and tilt function: 1. The steering column telescoping function stopped working and can no longer be adjusted leaving the steering wheel in a locked position. Potential for injury if the steering wheel cannot be moved far enough away from the driver if the air bag deploys during a frontal crash. 2. Steering wheel tilt function stopped working and can no longer be adjusted leaving the steering wheel in a locked position. This also poses a potential for injury if the steering wheel cannot be adjusted up or down to properly accommodate the driver if the air bag deploys during a frontal crash. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 Nissan maxima. The contact stated that after refueling, the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the steering lock unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because the necessary parts were on back order. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the parts would become available in a few weeks. The failure and the current mileages were 40,000.
On december 17, 2012 I had driven from my house to the gym. There was no issue with my car and when I went to leave my car would not start. My Nissan maxima has a push start ignition and when I pushed the button nothing happened. In the display it kept indicating the yellow key light and the red key security light. I had the car towed to the local Nissan dealer who told me the steering lock assembly had failed. If I wanted this fixed it was going to cost me $800.00. I asked the service department if this was a common failure at the mileage the car was at and I was told it was not common. Researching the problem it seems that this issue occurs regularly for a 2009 Nissan maxima around this mileage range. I was told the warranty does to cover this and it had expired a year earlier. While traveling west on the pa turnpike, my steering wheel just dropped to the lowest position!! Scared the hell out of me. I ended up getting the car to the shoulder of the road. I was able to get the steering position up at little to stay and lock. Drove the car back to my local Nissan dealership to tell me that the motor for the steering wheel tilt and/or telescopic needs replaced!! What a freaking nightmare...$800 plus dollars for repairs plus tax!! What a crock of bull!! I see that this is happening to a lot of Nissan owners!! Why isnt the government doing anything!! Not until somebody has a fatality accident!!
Upon successfully unlocking the car, the push ignition failed to respond and the car would not start. The keyfob was able to lock and unlock the car, even set off the panic alarm but pressing the ignition button would not move the car out of "lock" position. The car had been parked for about 1.5 hrs before having been driven several miles. Upon diagnosis by a licensed mechanic, the electronic steering lock module was found to have failed. On further online research, it was learned that this part is susceptible to failure and it is common to find many 2009 Nissan owners of several models (altima, maxima, 370z) to have had this problem, within and outside of warranty.
Car will not start with the electric push button. It seems to be the electric steering lock mechanism actuator. Nissan wants to charge $1000 for the part and $400 labor. It took us 15 mins to take the part out ourselves and unplugged it and plugged it back in. It did work a few times but now it wont work again. Looks like I will have to buy the part which is on amazon for around $400.00. This is a real problem with this part and Nissan should honor an extended warranty on it! I had to have it towed twice before figuring this out! Not sure why they have charge so much for such a simple fix. The dealer ship is a rip off...

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 Nissan maxima. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the power wheel lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was not available. The VIN was unavailable.
Stopped at conveniance store and shut car off. Tried to restart car and it won't start. Had it towed to the dealer ship where I bought it. Found that it was the steering lock that had failed. Cost to replace was 1300 dollars. Found out this is a high failure part and should have been recalled.
Went to the supermarket and the car would not turn back on. The key light on the dash board is lite but the car is in lock mode and doesn't allow the car to turn on. It seems that the car isn't recognizing that the key is near to allow it to be turned on. I think there should be a recall on this issue. I've seen hundreds of people with the same issue. I don't have money to fix the issue or get it towed. The car is still in the supermarket parking lot. This is a nightmare. Nissan should take full responsibility for this issue and fix all of these cars free of charge. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 Nissan maxima. The contact stated that there was a progressing failure in which the push button start failed to function. The contact indicated that the ignition lock mechanism internally malfunctioned, which prevented the vehicle from starting on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for further diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

My wife is a high school teacher. She has an assigned spot which is right up to the curb near an entrance to the school, approximately 150 feet between curb and building. As she entered her spot and prepared to come to a complete stop, with her foot on the brake, the engine made a loud noise, she saw an exclamation point flash twice on the dashboard, and with her foot still on the brake, the car raced uncontrollably forward jumping the curb and did not stop until she pushed the stop/start button on the dashboard of the keyless system. As there were many students and several teachers in the vicinity, it is extremely fortunate that the car stopped for my wife and every one else in the area.
Driver's seat is not securely anchored to floor - it rocks slightly as I operate the vehicle. The dealer has attempted on 4 occasions to remedy this problem, and has not been able to. I do not believe the seat is sufficiently secure to protect me in a serious collision. *tr
My car would not start the key symbol light is on the dashboard. But the key locks and unlocked the car but it's doesn't start
Airbag sensor blinking. Seems to be a recurring problem with 2009 Nissan maxima. Read others complain of same. Dealership says it will cost $1700 to fix the problem. Since it is a recurring complaint it should be considered a recall item.

The passenger seat airbag deactivates when an adult is seated properly in the seat. It will work sometimes and not work others. There is no reasoning between the ability for the airbag to stay active or not. After researching this issue, it seems that there are numerous Nissan models that this affects. *tr
2003 Nissan maxima. Airbags was not working on vehicle according to an local service dept. *ta the consumer stated the air bag light started blinking. Two weeks later, she received a recall letter regarding the air bag, after the first dealer, told her there was nothing wrong. *jb

Bought a 2009 Nissan maxima on 4/21/2011, it had 25206 miles on it, I currently have 37000 miles on it. I have had to add air to my tires at least once a week, on christmas day I came out to a flat tire, removed wheel and noticed the inside wall had several "spider web" cracks on it, one was bad enough to leak air. I would like to now if anyone else has reported this problem? *kb

Passenger side air bag sensors keeps on resetting as no one is sitting on the seat. I have to tell the passenger to jump on the seat for the "air bag off" light to reset. The CVT transmission putter at low speed with a with lots of noise, I have to give it more gas for the noise to stop. The passenger front door lock and driver side rear door lock does not unlock. Fog light on the car is not working, I was told my a mechanic that the relay switch that is built into the steering column is no good and will need to be replaced.
