We have contacted Toyota about our 2010 highlander & its defective windshield which, based on conversations we've had with repair shops and Toyota employees, is likely caused by the plastic film pressed between the glass. This defect causes visual distortion and is incredibly distractive while driving and causes eye strain. I spoke to the salesman the other day who now says he believes it is a defect in all highlanders (we have not seen this defect in other highlanders ourselves). Toyota corp, despite all of this, refuses to acknowledge the problem nor even meet with us. They simply state it is our imagination. Whenever we discuss the matter with Toyota's service department, they deny it exists. But employees of the dealership acknowledge the problem. *tr

Immediately after purchasing our car, we noticed that the front windshield was defective. It has waves, causing vision distortion and headaches. We have contacted Toyota and also had a Toyota corp rep look at it, without us being present, and they simply deny this problem exists. We have compared it with other highlanders, and none have the same issue. The salespeople acknowledge a problem exists, but Toyota will not fix it. *tr

12/03/2015 ODI #10808185.0

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 Toyota highlander. The contact stated that the front passenger and rear passenger side windows failed to close. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v689000 (visibility) after the failure was experienced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where unknown areas were lubricated, but the failure persisted. The dealer did not inspect or replace the pwm circuit board; however, the remedy did not prevent the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

Back door states that it is ajar even when it is completely closed. This seems to be safety issue to me and Toyota should check and issue an recall.

12/23/2025 ODI #11706861.0

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that the gear shifter had been stuck on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the fuses were replaced on several occasions; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the rearview mirror wiring had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

12/02/2011 8,000 mi ODI #10438076.0

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 Toyota highlander. The contact stated that the battery died prematurely. The dealer made two attempts to duplicate the failure by changing the battery. On the third occasion, the contact notified the manufacturer who advise that the vehicle needed to be driven at least 15 miles per day to prevent the battery from going dead because of the dessert-like climate in which the contact resided. The vehicle was not further repaired. The current mileage was 11,200 and the approximate failure mileage was 8,000. Updated 01/05/12*lj the consumer stated Toyota finally inspected the vehicle and determined the battery needed to be recharged.

Power lift hatchback door not cosed all the way. Very dangerous.

12/09/2014 40,000 mi ODI #10663231.0

Apparently this is a very common problem from my research and my discussion with the dealer. My 2010 highlander with 40k miles has a power rear door. The hinges holding the door are spaced too far which causes stress on the mechanical arm and bolt that attach to the door. My wife was in the vehicle and pressed the button to close the rear power door when she heard a loud "pop". The bolt attaching the "arm" to the door stripped and came out of the door. The dealer said my full coverage "bumper to bumper" warranty does not cover this and gave me the phone number to Toyota. I spoke with Toyota and they investigated the issue with the dealer. Toyota came back and offered to split the cost 50%. This is unacceptable in my opinion as it is clearly a manufacturing issue as well as a safety concern

I was driving on a straight and level road, at approximately 30 MPH. Traffic came to a sudden stop and I applied the brakes in a hard and sudden manner, but the vehicle failed to stop in time, though I believe it should have. No airbags deployed. My vehicle struck the vehicle in front of me, also pushing that vehicle into the one in front of it. During repairs, it was discovered the brake pedal mechanism had failed at some point, requiring replacement.

Driving down the highway the abs srs air bag lights and the warning triangle all came on and then shortly after that a loud continuous beeping sound started and when my wife tried to pull over she realized she really had to cram on the brakes to get the car to stop... this scared the daylights out of my wife and thank god we didn't get in wreck!! But I dont understand why this is not a recall problem after all the other people I have read about with the same problem with the abs accumulator bleeding off pressure causing the pump motor to run abnormally long and in our case constantly to the point of no being burnt up and needing to replace.. my wife is the second owner of this car and we have had it since 2015... how is the window switch MORE OF AA CONCERN THAN FAULTY ABS ACCUMULATORS???

tires 1 complaint shown

12/27/2010 ODI #10372574.0

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 Toyota highlander equipped with toyo a20 tires (na), size 245/55/r19. The contact stated that when receiving the vehicle, it swayed to the side it was turned. The contact called the tire manufacturer who offered no assistance and referred him to the vehicle manufacturer. The dealer stated that the brand of the tires was not compatible with weight of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 208. The consumer stated when going around curves, the vehicle would lean into the corner curve more than normal, which would cause the consumer to forcibly turn the steering wheel to bring the vehicle back into the center of the lane. The consumer believed the sidewalls of the tires were too soft, which allowed the vehicle to roll sideways because of its weight, into the corner

Door locks on passenger front and rear, driver front and rear, have all been replaced or repaired at least twice due to malfunctions. As of december 2015, the locks are failing again for a third time, creating a safety hazard. Locks don't work. They will either stay locked, failing to open, or now, they will not lock at all. This is an ongoing problem that has never been fixed properly. Keeps recurring.

Driver backed out of an end parking space (nose in, curb in front and on right). Driver felt wheel (right side) go over curb (turned too quickly). Driver stopped, shifted to drive (forward) to get off the curb. When driver touched accelerator, the vehicle shot forward (seemed like 50 MPH). Left front of the highlander creased the two side doors of the minivan parked adjacent on the left. The left front of the highlander sustained grille damage, left fender, headlight and running light, driver door and left mirror. Fender pushed back prevented driver door from being opened. Air bags did not deploy. The highlander was purchased 1/4/2010. The accelerator recall was performed by the dealer in march 2010.

Three times reported feeling a rattle in the steering on right turn ln rough road to Toyota service dept. Three times they deny saying 3 people (including the service manager) drove it and didn't feel anything. I told them that when there's more weight on the front end, like braking downhill and turning right can feel it more. But the tested on flat ground in the area of motor imports downtown honolulu. I even reported in earlier servicing that the car drifts from side to side on the freeway. As if the steering is loose. And they test drove and said it was fine. This is the last day of my warranty and I googled the problem to find others with the same problem and even a diagram of the fix on: http://www.underhoodservice.com/article/110175/tech_tips_toyota_tacoma_makes_rattling_noise

We were traveling on the interstate after about a 7 hour drive and the low oil pressure warning display was flickering on and off but never stayed on consistently. I pulled over and there was no oil in the engine, I mean it was bone dry. I'm truly surprised the car was still operating. When oil was put in, it poured, and I mean poured, right back out. We had to be towed because the car could not be driven. It was determined that the engine oil cooler line was leaking.

We returned the vehicle to the dealer to discover that they believe that the rear wheel bearings have failed for some reason. *tr
