Part Description: RHR Radio Issue Description: Issue 1: While performing RHR radio reflash (software update), on rare occasions, the flash can fail to properly update the radio resulting in the radio running in Emergency IFS mode. This error condition can occur due to interrupting the software update, background radio operations interfering with the reflash process, etc. The radio will reboot, but with limited functionality (examples may include but are not limited to: NAV, Voice Recognition, Bluetooth, or AUX jack are inop, no available space shown on HDD, etc.). The radio can still be properly updated by simply reinserting the software update disc and performing the reflash procedure again

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report a cascade of powertrain failures in the 2011 Dodge Nitro. Transmission problems emerge early and worsen with heat: harsh downshifts that sound catastrophic, delayed gear engagement, and complete failure to shift—with dealers unable to duplicate or fix the issue permanently. Multiple owners cite a 4-liter transmission installed in a 6-liter engine as the root cause.

Driveshaft failure is the most dangerous complaint. At least four owners report driveshafts snapping or breaking completely while driving or shifting, preceded by loose heat shielding rubbing the shaft. One incident caused airbag deployment and uncontrolled rollback; another owner noted the same failure was recalled for 2007–2008 models but Dodge declined to extend the recall to 2011 model year.

Electrical system failures cause sudden engine stall and complete power loss—dash lights off, steering stiff, no warning indicators. A defective Totally Integrated Power Module causes wiring to alternator and PCM to fry, costing owners ~$2,000 in repairs and creating potential fire hazard. Transfer case seals leak repeatedly despite multiple replacements and eventually strip internally. Throttle pedal loss and temperature gauge faults round out the reported defects.

Failure modes owners describe

Transmission shift and engagement problems

Owners report erratic transmission behavior: delayed gear engagement, loud banging when shifting, downshifts that sound like the vehicle is falling apart, harsh shifts on cruise control, and complete failure to engage gears. One dealer stated a 4-liter transmission was installed in a 6-liter engine. Complaints occur from low miles and worsen with transmission temperature.

When: Some noted from purchase; others at 7400 miles; one instance at 20 mph

Symptoms owners cite: Delayed or no gear engagement when pressing accelerator; Loud banging or explosive sound during shifts; Harsh downshifts especially on cruise control; Sounds like bottom falling out of vehicle; Vehicle stuck in first gear; Engine revving without acceleration; Vehicle bucking and jerking

Codes mentioned: P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit/Open, P0732 - Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio, P0868 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Low, U0002 - High Speed CAN Communication Bus

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers performed adjustments to transmission computer, but described as temporary fix; issues recurred. Dealerships unable to replicate problems in several cases.

Driveshaft failure and fracture

Multiple owners report driveshaft suddenly breaking or snapping, often preceded by loose heat shielding rubbing against the shaft. Incidents occurred while in motion and at standstill, with one causing airbag deployment and vehicle rollback. Owners note this issue was recalled for 2007–2008 models but not addressed in 2011 model year despite identical cause.

When: Occurred at various mileages including during normal driving

Symptoms owners cite: Loud roaring noise, vehicle stuck in low gear; Driveshaft breaks or snaps completely; Heat shield visibly loose and rubbing on shaft; Sudden loss of power transmission

Repairs/costs cited: Private mechanics and dealers identified loose heat shields as root cause. Repair required driveshaft replacement.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall N10 issued for 2007–2008 models for heat shield defect; 2011 model year not included despite identical failure mode. Dodge hotline stated area manager would decide inclusion; dealership did not pursue recall coverage.

Overheating and temperature gauge malfunction

Temperature warning lights and engine overheat indicators activated despite ambient temperatures well below what gauges displayed. One owner's dash read 120 degrees when actual temperature was 80 degrees. Another experienced odor, heat, and what appeared to be smoke from engine bay shortly after purchase.

When: Early in ownership; one at 4,648 miles on vehicle

Symptoms owners cite: Temperature warning light illuminated; Engine overheat smell and visible heat/smoke from under hood; Temperature gauge reading inaccurate (120 degrees vs. 80 actual); Engine light illuminated

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership initially claimed temperature gauge was fine; issue persisted.

Engine stall and electrical system failures

Owners report engine shutting off without warning while driving at low speeds and on highways. Events included stalling while turning and while stopped at intersections. Associated with defective Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) with fried wiring to alternator and PCM. One owner experienced similar incident resulting in engine replacement under warranty.

When: One at 26,000 miles; another at 30,000 miles with earlier incidents; one early in ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stalls while driving; Complete power loss—dash lights off, no warning indicators; Steering wheel becomes stiff; All instrument panel lights go out simultaneously; Clicking sound when vehicle dies

Repairs/costs cited: Defective TIPM required replacement; wiring to alternator and PCM was fried. Owner incurred approximately $2,000 in repairs (battery, two alternators, towing). Engine replaced by manufacturer at 30,000 miles in separate incident.

Transfer case seal leakage

Transmission transfer case seal failed repeatedly despite multiple replacement attempts at dealerships and independent shop. Failure recurred after each repair. Leak appeared as early as 20,747 miles.

When: 20,747 miles; recurred after repairs

Symptoms owners cite: Transfer case seal leaked fluid

Repairs/costs cited: Transfer case seal replaced multiple times at dealership and independent mechanic (Fitzgerald Auto Mall, Lexington Park, MD); failure recurred each time and could not be permanently corrected.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer contacted; vehicle not repaired.

Transfer case stripping

Transfer case internal components stripped out twice in same vehicle within months. Second failure occurred shortly after powertrain warranty repair of first failure. Routine maintenance on transfer case and differentials performed but failures continued unexplained.

When: Two months after purchase (used vehicle); recurred shortly after

Symptoms owners cite: Transfer case stripped out internally

Repairs/costs cited: First failure repaired under powertrain warranty; second failure required another repair.

Throttle loss and throttle pedal failure

Owner experienced complete loss of throttle response while driving. Gas pedal stopped working entirely while vehicle was in motion, requiring towing.

When: 4,648 miles; same vehicle with transmission issues

Symptoms owners cite: Throttle pedal becomes unresponsive; No acceleration possible while in motion

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle towed to dealership; repair status not documented in complaint.

TIPM electrical module failure affecting multiple systems

TPC Power Box (TIPM) malfunction caused simultaneous failure of multiple electrical and drivetrain systems: wipers, four-way flashers, horn, headlights, chimes, dash sensors, and transmission shifted erratically. Another complaint documented loose ground wall wire causing all dash warning lights to illuminate simultaneously and engine to seize.

When: 26,000 miles for ground wire incident; timing not specified for TIPM complaint

Symptoms owners cite: Wiper blades power on independently; All warning lights illuminate at once; Seat belt warning lamp illuminates despite belts fastened; Four-way flasher activates; Horn malfunction; Headlights malfunction; Transmission shifts erratically or stutters; Engine seizes or loss of acceleration; Electrical grinding sound audible when vehicle shut off

Codes mentioned: Loose ground wall wire identified

Repairs/costs cited: Ground wall wire was tightened; failure recurred. TIPM replacement needed but complaint does not specify repair completion.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified in ground wire incident; vehicle was repaired but failure recurred.
