What stands out

Owners have filed 28 electrical complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 16 model years of GMC Terrain in our records for electrical problems, this one ranks #3 by owner-complaint volume.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: This model is heavily plagued by electrical and engine-control faults that create both safety hazards and expensive, often unsuccessful repair attempts. Stalling during driving, starting failures, battery drain, and brake/power steering loss are recurring complaints with no reliable fix, and manufacturers appear slow or unwilling to help resolve these issues even when recalls are involved.

The 2012 GMC Terrain electrical and engine-control complaints cluster around repeated engine stalling, starting failures, and cascading electrical malfunctions that dealers struggle to diagnose and fix. Owners report engine dying at idle, red lights, or during acceleration—sometimes with the center console going black and power steering lost mid-drive. Battery drains weekly in some cases, and jumping the vehicle provides only temporary relief. Multiple owners have spent thousands on parts replacements (spark plugs, sensors, alternator, battery) and dealer visits (one owner: seven shop visits) without resolving the core issue. Several complaints mention that when dealers investigated, they found multiple parts already under recall that GM never notified owners about.

Electrical gremlins extend beyond the engine: dashboard and radio screens blackout for hours, backup cameras fail, turn signals lose audible clicks, interior lighting goes dark, and the radio refuses to shut off even with the key removed. Headlamp connectors overheat and melt, exposing bare wire and creating fire hazard—one owner replaced the same side within nine months and it failed again. The HVAC system leaks A/C coolant inside and defroster won't switch modes, causing windshield fog that blocks visibility. Seatbelt sensors trigger constant false warnings. One critical safety failure: airbags did not deploy in a high-speed front-end collision. Most disturbing, a vehicle caught fire while the dealership was test-driving it to diagnose oil-consumption problems, and the manufacturer was slow to respond.
